It's a shame how covid19 came to spoil an otherwise interesting conversation. I'm still amazed how marxists and many leftists still aren't grasping that the "pandemic" was to a very large extent a capitalist, fascist, social construct. Lockdowns, masks, social distancing, and tests, a sinister farce. Attempting to win olympics of virtue signaling? Or arrogance induced blindness? or just mere stupidity...

This is hilarious. Is this an endless debate about the economic future of technological society? Capitalism began being phased out in the 1920s. Corporate Consumerism with Planned Obsolescence began. Adam Smith: Download Wealth of Nations, it has been in the public domain, free on the internet, since 2001, and search it for "and account" you will find multiple instances of "read, write and account". Why doesn't the right or the left advocate mandatory accounting/finance in the schools? Karl Marx: Search his major work for depreciation. Marx mentioned depreciation of money and machinery multiple times. There were no steam trains when Adam Smith died. Marx rode in trains and saw machinery that was modern for his time. But what sophisticated consumer technology was there to depreciate in his day? In the 1930s John Maynard Keynes was writing about a 15-hour work week for grandchildren. That could have been the 1990s. But did Keynes ever see a television commercial for automobiles? When I went to college for Electrical Engineering the term e-waste did not exist. Today: Planned obsolescence has been going on for decades. What has happened to the DEPRECIATION of durable consumer goods? How many automobiles have Americans trashed since Sputnik? There were 200,000,000 motor vehicles in the US in 1994. Economists: Do not mention NDP, Net Domestic Product. They subtract the depreciation of Capital Goods from GDP like industrial robots and 18-wheel trucks but Joe Blow's car can fall apart and not get noticed. Can economists tell the difference between a banana and an air conditioner? NDP = GDP - Dcap (official economic delusion) NDP = GDP - (Dcap + Dcon) (reality) Dcap == Depreciation of Capital Goods Dcon == Depreciation of Durable Consumer Goods GDP == Grossly Distorted Propaganda I guess intellectuals and pseudo-intellectuals cannot figure out that economists cannot do algebra. Fascinating discussion, thanks! Does rationalism (in thought?) imply or lead to fascism? As touched upon in the discussion? I think this should be one of the biggest questions for the Left. Does it mean we should ask ourselves, why are we not deploying game theory in our strategies? The situation is now so bad I believe a tactical retreat is in order. People should move into communes, until there is at least 1 in 5 of us there. 1 in 5 of people as a whole. That means that when capitalism collapses there are people carrying the torch for anticapitalism, social justice, memory, and the like. And they can actually defend the land. That's my two cents of pessimism of the intellect.

Great discussion of Possessor and Crimes of the Future, must say I wasn't too impressed by the later when it first came out, thinking it just a sad parody of bourgie performance art without much to say beyond "aren't pretentious people pretentious?". Kristen Stewart was pretty magnificent though - she really needs to do more weird and edgy roles.

You could argue that Thatcher created meritocracy, but only for one generation. Those thay won that race, and their decendants become permanently rich. And those that lost that competition, and their decendents become permanent serfs. There's still a bit of movement between, but less and less each generation and it takes more and more effort over time.

27:08 The demand for brexit was so negative. Precisely. You think that was designed to encourage people to vote for it? The leave campaign was deliberately toxic, to deter right minded people from even considering any valid argument. Farage refused to allow any reasonable discussion, the left argument for leaving was completely ignored, by the media, amidst accusations of left wing bias. Laughable. Farage's defeat speech tells you he felt he'd done enough to avoid victory and he was smug. His claim to keep fighting was moot as there was no chance of another vote.
@happinesstan
@happinesstan Месяц назад
I wonder how many people realise that the opportunity to still discuss whether or not we should be in the EU only exists because we voted to leave. If we had voted to remain, that was it. One thing the Remain campaign did promise [actually I think it was Cameron], was that there was no second chance. Imagine negotiating with the EU with no threat of withdrawal. It's like voting to remove your right to vote.
@happinesstan

I'm not sure who, or what, told Cameron to say that, but it swung the vote for me.

@@markwelch3564 Exactly. Now you're voting from a weaker position. It's not like drawing close to America will solve all your problems over there. It's a mess over here. You guys need to make deals with Europe from a position of strength. Brexit was the nuclear button. Can't unpress it. And now what? I don't understand what the plan was, here.

Super interesting and as an ex SOAS kid, I'd be careful about using oriental concepts without a good critique of Orientalism and self reflection regarding your own use and engagements with such ideas and traditions. That said I've been doing a fairly similar thing with Taoism and Madhyamika and am currently restructuring my reality and mental health around Chinese medicine, that is, with a reality and mental health system that is not moralist.. 😉

IIRC Jimmy Somerville/Bronski Beat/The Communards were openly Marxist Socialist. And should Tony Wilson be considered for his Socialist / situationist-influenced actions. If so the effects of this could be acknowledged in action if not in intent. If it weren't for the success of New Order, he would have been able to fund Durutti Column. This isn't explicitly in the lyrics but maybe should be consider that action is more valuable than mere lyrics. No Style Council? They were very open about their Socialist politics; they literally filmed a video about solidarity in Poland at the time of Solidarność. Blur is mentioned but not "Common People" by Pulp? Probably the most popular UK class critique of the 90s. I probably should have waited until the end of the video but this already seems odd to talk past.

I think the character of Phil Daniels in Parklife is actually supposed to be unemployed in the song. The sneering is an ironic sneering at the employed people he thinks are look at down at him. Also, to earlier, the Walk Like an Egyptian song came out within a couple years of the Tutankhamun exhibit landing in NY, which was really a major moment, and there was a fair bit of cultural currency in the idea of Egypt through the 80s.

Starting around 37:00 Blincoe talks about how he doesn't think Nick Land has a social history involving division between precapitalist history and capitalist that Mark Fisher attributes to him, but I have seen some interviews where he seems to talk about such an idea, for instance the section starting about forty-nine minutes into Justin Murphy's interview with him (I don't know if we can link directly in comments but it's on youtube, the title is 'Ideology, Intelligence, and Capital with Nick Land') where he says capitalism always existed as a sort of potential to go critical like a nuclear pile when graphite rods are pulled out, but didn't actually start to go critical until the Renaissance, and that "a lot of the social-historical fabric is actually a containment system" and that system had a failure in the Renaissance, and the resulting explosive process "is what modernity is". I guess one could see this as an elaboration of the comment he made at the beginning of "Meltdown" which began "The story goes like this: Earth is captured by a technocapital singularity as renaissance rationalization and oceanic navigation lock into commoditization take-off."
