Where did you get the body shell? Or did you make it? In one video you said it was plastic!

Great job! Love it. I just saw a couple of these at R2LA droid meet up. For the aluminum panels, you could have used a Silhouette Vinyl Machine and cut them using the thick silver reflective vinyl sheets, as they look just like aluminum. You have great skills at air brushing.

What size bearings are they? I’m looking to clean mine out and run acetal plastic ball bearings.
@myAstromech
@myAstromech Год назад
Hey Collin. I assume you are asking about the ball size. If you have not already answered your own question these have 8mm/0.313" balls. I tried Delrin but switched back to steel as I felt they worked better For Me. The steel ran sooth and fast but the Delrin were noticeably quieter. I wish I A/B tested them on camera for everyone and I may do so in the future.

When people say "greblies", does that mean strictly pieces for ornamentation? I hear that term used a lot for building Star Wars builds.

Ahh! When I saw the paint chip with the air gun and you just stopped… I know how you feel! I was painting some aluminum parts for R2 and had all the blue and clear and everything done and dry for over a week. Then a bit of blue tape I used to protect the area that is exposed AL pulled a huge chuck off…. I had cleaned everything and used what was called Aluminum primer. It all pealed off. 98% of it anyway.

I'm planning on using this type of bearing to build a giant wall hourglass. In your video when you drill through the aluminum, is it because this bearing can only be screwed to one surface and you needed to screw it both ways (like a normal steel lazy susan)? I don't have the item in hand so I'm trying to figure out. Is it that you replace the rubber feet with holes? Cheers
@myAstromech

I understand that you'd like to print your own Astromechs. My Droids are not 3d Printed but have some printed parts. (Also fiberglass, metal, and plywood) I have helped compile a lot of 3d models that are available for Free to club members (R2 Builders Group) but you may be looking for something more like what Michael Baddeley can provide. www.patreon.com/mrbaddeley If you choose to build something a bit more rugged I can however hook you up with composite skins/body... Good Luck, let me know if I can help with any other questions.

@@myAstromech Yeah, I remember watching a Star Wars Explained vid that talked about R5-D4 three different versions of his backstory. I personally like the canon version over the legend version. William, you are so right! This one was pretty bad. However, if you were to price out a quality industrial bearing of this size you may find that these are quite reasonably priced even with the flaws LOL. Just assume that you will need to spend an evening cleaning it up and add the cost of your time to the cost of the Rockler. Thanks for the Comment!

How would it cost of r6
@myAstromech
@myAstromech 3 года назад
Hi Bear, Sorry I missed your earlier question. Based on what some friends are doing, and on what I have done myself so far, an Astromech can easily push up past $10000. BUT you can do it more economically. I have seen simple Droids come in at under $2000. However, you can have Inexpensive or Accurate and Dependable... not both.

Bear, Thanks for the question... This R6 is probably going to end up right around $5000CAD (perhaps a bit more). I have managed to keep the cost down by building everything so far myself and using a lot of what I already had on hand.

when I was a home (hopeful) prop maker, my "mistakes" became battle damage. I dropped one of my Mando buckets and it cracked (vertically) so I "glassed" it from behind and only slightly filled the crack and made a couple matching marks with a Dremel and filled them with copper to make it look like large claw marks. Looks cool if I do say so myself. Seeing how 3d printers are now affordable, I may get back into making a few Star Wars props. Starting with an Astromech, then FINALLY a Vader helmet and hard parts. Yay 3d printers.

@adonian, Yes! Nice story about embracing the defects! Armor is fantastic in the way that it allows you so much freedom that way.
