Well here in the 3rd world country that is America students don't get paid. Other countries pay their students a stipend because they're smart enough to realize that having smart, educated citizens pays off
@@alexrogers777 students dont get paid in most of the world actually, countries like finland are rare exceptions. but i do agree that america's school fees are pretty high, especially for colleges edit: oops i confused denmark and finland. also apparently germany and poland pays students too according to replies so thats cool
@@TC127_ i study in finland and we dont get paid, all the government benefits available you have to pay back once youre done. im not saying its a bad system by any means but ya just clarifying!!
To avoid having to use a pot AND a pan for your breakfast just put 1 egg directly into the hot porridge, works very good too ;) (no need to use a pan in this case, for those who hate washing dishes :D)
Yep! That’s what I did. I made a little nest space for the egg to touch the pan between the oats. Also, if the pan starts getting too dry while you’re trying to cook the egg, just cover the egg with your oats and let the heat from the oats poach the egg. This will also evenly distribute your oats over the egg so you’ll be more likely to get bites of egg with each scoop of oats. If you use a wooden spoon you can eat from the pan and save a plate, too.
I use to hate sweet oatmeals but in India there is this 'masala oats' it's instant food type, like just add water and sachet given and it's ready in 5 mins. Taste reallyyyyy good
Thank you so much! I didn’t have sesame oil or miso, so I made mine with pumpkin oil, chili, and dried olives and tomatoes. It’s really cool because it’s easy to customize and super nutritious
I dont hv pumpkin oil, but could u suggest some other customizations :) Also probably how would miso sauce taste Like what other oils than sesame or pumpkin
🤣 Don't worry, the toasting only gives it a little more depth of flavour, you can actually skip thr toasting step and use a little already toasted sesame oil and will still get a nice toasty taste.
Yknow how usually when u see ppl cook u can almost taste what theyre making ? This is one of the few times my brain straight up couldnt even imagine the taste LOL. Savoury oatmeal is such a diff take i rly gotta try it
the thing is, people don’t budget like this.. you can’t buy a teaspoon of miso paste, you have to buy a whole container.. i’d love it if you could include the standard price because you can’t buy ingredients like this! ~~~
You don't buy a new container every time you make a new meal, do you? I get what you mean, if someone doesn't have things in their staples, it might be a big investment that they have to do first to use that ingredient, but that doesn't mean the price in the video is false.
I do savory oats so many times! I am not broke, this is just comforting. I particularly like sauteeing a bunch of vegetables in olive oil, and then adding the oats to the pan. They will soak up the vegetable "stock". And it is DELICIOUS with curry.
Yo legit this guy cooks THE BEST looking food, Idk if it's the camera effects or what, but all that shit he makes looks so yummy, That too from his apartment table, not even a kitchen. Respect to KWOOK !
this is actually very similar to Chinese jook, which is basically a savory rice porridge. in times of poverty it was just water, rice, and whatever people had around, but nowadays I tend to make it w/chicken or pork for flavor, oyster sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, and scallions like what you put in yours. it's cool to see a western version of one of my childhood favorites, nice job!
The oats instead of rice is also pretty common in Asia. My Malaysian family introduced me to it after a lifetime of me living in Australia and I can't believe they didn't tell me it existed sooner. I LOVE it savoury instead of sweet. Now I know it exists, I keep seeing instant versions in my Chinese grocery.
Just made this with peppers, onions and grape tomatoes. Added ginger and garlic and used soy and sesame oil with a touch of maple syrup to mimic the dark soy sauce’s sweetness. Absolutely amazing 🤩
Yessss it’s so nice to see someone else making this! I’ve been spreading the gospel of savory oatmeal for like 10 years haha, I’ve been a fan for longer than it’s been a thing online. This is pretty much exactly how I make it. Sometimes I like my egg a bit runnier (or I’m just too lazy to dirty a second pan), so I just make a well in the oatmeal while it’s still in the pan and crack an egg into it, then put the lid on for a minute or two (until the whites are mostly set). The runny egg makes the oatmeal extra creamy and rich. :)
I’ve also made a delicious savory oatmeal by cooking the oats in chicken broth and herbs, and then topping with a bit of freshly grated Parmesan or other sharp cheese, a drizzle of good quality olive oil, and an egg and/or some rotisserie chicken (or whatever other protein I have in the fridge that works for this). I’ve even made savory oats with leftover homemade French onion soup! That was delicious, but obviously you have to have leftover soup for that lol.
I could not stand oatmeal for the longest time until Quaker Oats came out with a with a savory mix box of oatmeal nearly 10 years ago and now will only eat oatmeal when it is savory. I’m still bitter about Quaker getting rid of that instant oat mix
It can be yummy! Just throw in garlic, onion, veggies and your favourite curry powder - garnish with chopped herbs of choice and add tomatoes if you like the tangy flavour - no need for oil as well - you can even lose weight with it - provided you have it at dinner time!
This recipe is amazing! Tried it and now, too add some veggies I also top then with tomato and, grated carrot. Since I'm Dutch and generally eat bread for breakfast I eat this for lunch and I live for it!
It’s like congee. I always eat oatmeal like this on my deficit days because it’s very filling and quicker than making congee. I sometimes add chopped hotdog or seafood (always along with ginger).
I had a awesome breakfast recently. Chop some cucumber in thin stripes. Cook some thin asian noodles you like or buy them pre cooked ^^°. Rinse them in hot water. Put some chilli flakes garlic and some spring onion on the noodles. Fry a scrabled egg with plenty oil. Add the oil to the bowl. Add some white sesame together with soy sauce and if you like black vinegar. Add the cucumber and mix everything together. Finish everything off with the egg on top and your breakfast is served. This is super delicious, takes only a couple of minutes and isnt hot but rather refreshing. So great for a summer morning
This is nice, I advise toast one slice of bread, take two pieces of garlic, put little of oil and mush it in mortar. Boil one egg hard. Cut it half and take out yolk. Press it to paste and both add to it. Black pepper… *white cut thinly and sprinkle over it.
I love how when someone is building something and cause it’s cheap And then people are all like oh well what tools but when it’s cooking no one talks about pans or pots n spoons Edit: i was only pointing it out that people dont talk about one thing but do about another
Yeah but if you don’t have a pan or a spoon maybe you should invest in one … When we talk about building something the tools are expensive and not useful everyday, not like a pan
Over the long term, you’ll save money. (eating out will cost AT minimum 5 dollars PER MEAL) you can buy a cheap set for 80$. Don’t eat out for about 1 week and it’ll practically pay for itself.
Bruh. Just bring the extra ones from home. If there's none buy them. Pans, oils, sauces, meat ect are expensive at first. But cooking is cheaper in the long run compared to eating out.
The nice thing about this is how many paths you can take to get a similar result Basically oatmeal + savoury seasoning + egg + acidic veggie = comfort food awesomeness For example, instead of using miso and soy sauce, I used a bullion cube, instead of sesame oil, I used chilli crisp oil, and because I didn't have scallions I used diced cherry tomatoes. Tasted amazing
Great clip, will have to give this recipe a try. Have been eating savoury oats for years, much to the amusement and ridicule of friends & family. Whole rolled oats are way more versatile than many realise, having a much meatier texture than the finely processed sweet slop people associate with them. They're tasty and filling cooked in chicken or veg stock too.
So i have a gripe about all these “super cheap meal!” videos, because its not realistic. You simply CANNOT buy ingredients in that small of quantity. Like whats the ACTUAL price for ingredients at their cheapest and how many servings of this can you make with that, and how much is left over of what ingredients, and lastly what are some other options we can make with that leftover? That last part can be its own video, showing another recipe using like that miso paste or whatever. Thats how you mot only show an ACCURATE measure of cost, but also keep people engaged about watching these videos, keep linking to more and more videos using similar ingredients, its more honest AND better content.
Thats My comfort Food, my mom used to make it when I was sick 🤒 She toasted 100gramms oats in 30g butter till golden Then added some chopped vegetables (the ones u use for soups, carrots, onion, leeks) and sautéed them Add 1l water with 1 tbsp vegetable stock (or whatever stock you like) And then reduced it till it was thick A bit more creamy than the porridge one In the end she chopped up some sausage and threw it in the pot It’s amazing, I love it and still make it at least 3 to 4 times a month 🤩
I especially like this new take on oatmeal As a senior I have several reasons for eating oatmeal, but I NEVER thought of making it savoury. Thanks!! I mean, it's a grain, so why not??
I was literally just binging your shorts and one of them had sweet porridge in it, and it reminded me how fed up I am w/ sweet porridge, so I searched up "savory porridge" and this came up, you absolute king😭😭❤
Tried this today with my wife’s leftover pan from her cooking breakfast sausage. I used Worcestershire sauce instead of soy sauce, MSG instead of miso paste, and onion powder instead of fresh green onion/scallions. I also ground up some black pepper over it. Pretty great. I definitely can’t enjoy oats without doing some version of your recipe. I’m not a fan of the sweet recipes with the oat texture, and it’s so much better as a savory meal.
Hi Kwoowk !! Savory oats is already a thing actually, commercially speaking. There's this dish called masala oats here, in India, which isn't really popular but still a super affordable meal. You can buy a packet of it and then put some veggies (seared) in it along with whatever seasoning you prefer :)
For someone who loves oats that taste like dessert, this is actually pretty good! I subbed the miso paste with reg soy sauce since I don't have it atm, and it still turned out great!
Yaaaassss. I do this all the time, it's great. I usually cook mine with soy milk and add in any beans I have (often white beans in tomato sauce but also chickpeas or kidney beans) and also nutritional yeast, all for some extra protein. I almost always have some leftover grilled seasonal veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, butternut squash on hand so I add those or just some rocket, spinach etc. Whether I add the egg or not depends on how much physical activity I plan to do that day, with the beans it already has a decent amount of protein. It's super tasty and easy and it's especially great when it's cold out, 10/10 recommend
My fav way to eat oats Pour into a pan with milk Let reduce until your liking (milk will be left so however much milky you want it) but be warned to not burn it or it'll stick to the bottom Add a dash of cinnamon and honey Enjoy
If you're allergic to oats like me, you can sub with an equal 1:1:1 mixture of chia seeds, flax seeds and hazelnut flour. Tastes bomb. I've been doing savory porriges ever since I went low carb and couldn't have toast in the morning. Little known trick- if it's not umami enough for you even with dried mushroom powder, and you're vegan, or maybe you just like more deep flavor, try a tiny amount of ground sichuan peppercorn. Tricks your tastebuds.
Thank you for this, found the recipe a week ago and my breakfast now is amazing, I add avocado instead of egg cause it's faster and I'm in a hurry to go to work :p
I'm not a student but I might be soon, so please teach me all your ways ❤ I think you might have just revolutionized my whole life! I honestly love the oatmeal so much 😂 I eat oatmeal ALL THE TIME but not like this/ this is amazing!
