Turn fire into conductive ink and paint, then build electronic circuits, paper musical instruments and inputs for your Arduino boards!
Today you will learn how to make your own conductive ink to draw electronic circuits using the leftovers from your fireplace or BBQ! You can use this ink to draw circuits on paper and cardboard, learn about electronic circuits or play around with arduino boards like the Makey Makey to create paper musical instruments like pianos, digital drumsets, guitars, etc.
Conductive Ink is a great way to learn the basics of electronics. This a recipe that is non-toxic and extremely low cost. Comercial conductive inks cost around $10 to $15 for a small pen that may not last for much, specially if you want to draw large shapes or cover large surface areas.
This paint will just cost you cents to make using charcoil left from your fireplace or BBQ, a bit of black water paint and a bit of Elmer's glue! That's it!! The principle is that carbon dust is conductive so once you blend the charcoil from your fireplace and mix it with a bit of paint and glue you will have a paint that becomes conductive together with the carbon dust!
Now this is not as conductive as commercially available paints that use silver particles or industrial purified carbon, but it will be very useful to conduct very small currents, to turn on an LED or as inputs for Arduino boards. Please experiment with this and let's find out how to make this paint much more conductive with other ready available, cheap materials. Please email us at info@makerboat.com or visit us at www.makerboat.com if you have any suggestions. Let's create a Creative Commons, Open Source Conductive Paint!

Get a cookie tin or a cleaned out metal paint bucket, make a small carpenter nail sized hole in the lid put wood strips like Popsicle sticks or paper in. Close the lid put that on a fire for 15 minutes or more till the fire burns out. Inside will be charcoal perfect for your projects. If you use 95% rubbing alcohol instead of water you can just let it evaporate away after blending and you will not get the mineral contaminates if you used tap water.

material resistance is normalized to the length and cross-sectional area of measurement. The 'acceptable' chunks of charcoal might have had the same resistance as the rejected ones. If they truly do vary between chunks, then you need to measure with the same distance between probes.

+James Bryan Hi James, it would be cool if you can try it out, but hopefully with cheap components in case you ruin something, also in case you need a lot of current, this ink has a lot of resistance, as long as you apply a low current nothing should happen except that its not as conductive as commercial silver based ink

Have you tried cyanoacrylate or super glue the slower curing type applied first not blended with the powdered conductive charcoal. Then before it dries shake the conductive dust over the glue from a salt shaker. I would think creating rust powder from a steel wool pad,or copper chore boy dampened with vinegar then dried and pulled apart and mixed with the chared dust would improve conductivity. One might also give clear nail polish a try using the paint and shake method.

Is it possible to make carbon from plastic by pyrolyzing it instead of wood ? I think the carbon should be purer than carbon from wood, and so its conductivity should be better. What do you think about ?
@oudotcom

Lampblack for painters works also very nice. Does have a much lower Resistance in the 50 to 100 Ohm range ! Is much better than Charcoal ! Surely the silvery Graphite is still the best as it can go to around 10 to 20 Ohms this way, but it is more expensive and sometimes hard to get . You can also use big graphite Pencils for painters and blend them down. Measure the resistance before buying them with a digital Multimeter... If you only have charcoal, use the process as shown here, so you only take the better conductive parts and then you can also Hammer them into a rod in an iron tube and compress the powder very much and then heat it red hot glowing, that will also enhance conductivity... sometimes it is just okay to hammer it down and compress it very much...but with glowing it also red hot makes a real graphite out of it...but don´t let it completely burn, otherwise you will only have white ash left....After that you can grind it or blend it down again to powder and mix it with water and glue as it is shown in this video and then you have a nice much more conductive paint... or use the heated rods you made with it as electrodes for batteries...or press the powder into Plates for even higher surface battery or Supercap electrodes.... Hope this helps. Regards , Stefan.

You might improve your chances of making your charcoal better conductive by limiting access to air. Wrap a dried block of wood in aluminum foil, better yet, fill a steel paint can and let it vent volitals, hydrogen, and carbon monoxides as the wood undergoes pyrolysis to charcoal. You need to ensure the fire heats the can long enough to complete the process.

@bcnloft
@bcnloft 7 лет назад
Did you try clear, water based glue? Did you test the conductivity of charcoal before blending? Did you check the conductivity of the mix before adding glue? It could be that the pieces of charcoal you used were not burnt enough and the quantity of the carbon element is not large, did you used wooden charcoal? In many countries there is stone charcoal which pretty sure won't work with the blender :)

Active carbon and silver is good conductive materials which I've used. I've used silicone and super glue as adhasive. I've added metals as high capacity. However after glue is dried since surface of this paste is glue this paste does not becomes conductive. I wonder how can achive this conductive ink as video. It's impossible since surface of paste is polymer!

Activated carbon resistance is 30ohm.cm. I've used White glue which is water based. Final mixture is 200-300 kohm.cm. However this paste is not well. I want to use liqud silicone. How can I achive this issue?
@bcnloft
@bcnloft 7 лет назад
+fatih atatug i don't think super glue works, probably silicon either, the ink worked very well with clear, transparent water based glue as shown in the video, probably both super glue and silicon have chemicals that create a structure that is very resistant to electricity, like polymers that are completely non conductive, sorry

Does this flex with the paper? If this is flexible enough to not break when the paper flexes, you could do some interesting things with it. I'm imagining, for example... You could draw a circuit on the inside of a plastic sleeve for laminating paper, then once it's dry, run it through the machine to seal it. You would then have a thin, semi-flexible, waterproof circuit. To use it, just poke holes in the right spots, insert whatever, and maybe coat it with silicone sealant. You could, for example, attach a few LED's and the appropriate button batteries to make a decorative light for the front of a cap. ☺
