My best success in removing decals on my Grady....use the rubber 3m style wheel. Rips off the decal pretty quick. To remove the glue, mineral spirts to wet the glue out for a few minutes, keep applying until glue softens, scrape with plastic scraper, then use mineral spirits on cotton towel to rub out the rest. Then wipe down with acetone with cotton towel and it will be glue free and ready for what is next. I removed the bottom paint on my 25'. Had a multiple layers and was very thick. Tried the stripper first and it was a mess and disaster, not to mention damaged my aluminum trailer and had to replace it a few years later due to corrosion. I had covered trailer with plastic and still got stripper on it perhaps when trying to pressure wash it off. Then resorted to sanding with DA sander and that worked best with 80 grit. I found former owners had over sanded when they applied the epoxy layer into the fiberglass, so I had to re-gel coat the entire bottom. It came out great, but was a big job I would not want to tackle again.

Working on the boat again that what I like!! If it were me I would put the bottom paint back I know it serves a purpose in salt water but it has a great look I think

They do make paint strippers for bottom paint. glad to see the 104 boat again.

Great to see you back on the Grady chief! We sanded the bottom paint off of ours (terrible job) because we preferred the bare look and our boat lives on a trailer. You might be able to use a bottom paint remover and scrape it off too. Can’t wait to see her on the water! 🤙🛥️🌊

We have the same boat and we removed the wood doors going to the cabin and replaced them with black 1/2 inch Plexiglas ones, looks great and modern.

Coastie here. Always bottom paint. If it's going to live in salt water you would use an anti-fouling coat over an epoxy primer. Fresh water more of a visual thing. You can, or someone looking at her, if she's listing from a possible leak. Bottom line is how would you like your B.U.F.F. to look? For your registration numbers your state will have those regulations. Coast Guard is more interested in being able to read the vessel name at a distance first before the registration.

Bottom paint is used to stop growth on the bottom of your boat because you leave it in the water. But to remove it and bring it back to what I think you would expect, is going to be a lot of work and money. I would repaint the bottom with anti-foul. Love what your doing keep up the good work.

Good to see the old Mexican saddle Dodge back in action as well 👍 I know that you are well past it but denatured alcohol works well on removing the sticky residue from gelcoat without gumming up the gelcoat itself. Acetone will actually melt the gelcoat surface.

Bottom paint. Once the bottom has been painted they really scuff it hard to where it will stick so you probably will need to put bottom paint back on. However they may different types of bottom paint for freshwater or for salt or for both and any color you can imagine if you want white or black or whatever. Glad you're working on the boat again. I'm really wanting you to get those engines on there and take it for a test drive even if it's not completely finished that would make my day. Keep up the good work

Napatha dissolves sticky residue from stickers and tape.

You need to determine if the bottom was sanded when the bottom paint was applied. If so that would require repainting with something. Glad you’re back on the $10.00 Boat.

My grandpa had a '98 Grady, 21'. it had the same blue Pin Stripes...I love that classic Grady look. I'd leave them if ya can. Also, power washing is awesome to watch. As for the bottom paint, it depends if you trailer the boat or have it in a slip at a maria.

I've used Polyglow on a few boats. If your boat is heavily oxidized you may need to wet sand with 400 grit. On a white boat left out in the sun, especially down south, the Polyglow will yellow after a few years. Remove with their stripper a section at a time and reapply.

You better check your states regulations on your boats numbers belong. In Michigan as well as most states your required to put them where they were before you removed them. Glad to see you and the boat back.

Have you considered painting the hull below the rubrail with Alexseal?

A retired carpenter here and You will not find any Dewalt cordless tools in my shop. They got me 30 years ago and I don't need to learn that lesson again. Milwaukee has never let me down. I always used M.E.K. for removing glue residue. Works removing silicone caulking also.

GW's just look good with bottom paint, black. Bet a 2025 GW the same size would be 150k?

A heat gun should work better to scrape those old stickers off with. As for the bottom I'd bottom paint it just so it looks good plus if whoever buys it keeps it in the water it will help prevent Alge from growing on it.

The fish don't care what the bottom of your boat looks like:) But gel-coat is tough so I would test different sandpaper grit to determine which one removes the bottom paint without going to deep and then polish up the gel-coat. Try the rubber wheel.

I run my boat in the ocean and I have removed all of the bottom anti-fouling paint, because I trailer my boat and it never sets in the water for more than a couple of days at a time. I used epoxy sealing paint and then a 2 part topcoat. Anti-fouling paint always looks terrible if you try to sell the boat. Plus it is a pain in the butt to remove and repaint every few years.

You can use Citristrip it will soften the paint and not harm the gel coat.

Great stuff I used this product a few years ago and it worked great

try buffing with soft scrub, i have restores the shine to boats that way, buffing wheel on a drill and soft scrub , this should also remove the bottom paint

No reason to paint the bottom on a trailer boat if it is not going to be spending a week or more at a time in the water. However since the paint has already been put on it needs to be removed before any other cosmetic coating can be put on or it will peel and flake off with the bottom paint. As you say bottom paint is constructed to chalk off and reveal new layers of anti fouling so it will not make a good base for a cosmetic coat. If you have a professional outfit that can wet soda spray it that might be a good choice then either just regelcoat as needed or layer a good primer and marine paint. The other choice is flat on your back with a sander (not what I would choose even if I were younger!) then prime and paint or gelcoat as you wish. Good to see you back on the boat. Pressure washing is fine since I enjoy watching someone else doing it!!

That stripe needs to go back on, it's what sets the Grady White image off.

Decals and such it helps to used a heat gun

By the way, check regulations as to where you can put the numbers and where you can't. It is pretty restrictive.

If you are going to have the boat in the water for an extended period-fresh or salt water-you should have a barrier coat on the gel coat, which is porous and will absorb water over time and blister. You would only need the true anti-fouling bottom paint (over top of the barrier coat) if you are in salt water. If you are going to trailer it exclusively then you don’t need barrier coat or bottom paint. But removing bottom paint is a pain. I think the easiest way to go would be to just give it a fresh coat of bottom paint. It will look perfectly good. Hopefully whomever did the bottom paint did it right and put down the barrier coat first. And FWIW I like the old school stripe. Lets you know it’s a Grady at a glance.

As far as the bottom paint goes, that would largely depend if you're planning on keeping it or not. If you were keeping it I would say paint it with anti-fouling paint, but if you're not going to keep it, leave it as is, and if you get comments from prospective buyers that it's a deal breaker, then it's your choice whether to do that, or take a bit off the price.

I scored a 22ft Concorde glass boat for free but i had to buy a motor that cost me $5000 for a 225hp Honda plus $600 for all suvis part's for the motor free 200lt fuel tank and rego for a free boat it still ended up costing about $6000 to get it in the water to go fishing

Curious as to how that Poly Glow reacts. It may make it extremely difficult if you ever decide to re gelcoat or paint the areas it has been applied on. Many of the silicone based products such as it get right into the pores of the glass and prohibit good adhesion. If they are one of that variety I don't know of any good way to remove them. Proceed with caution. Many miracle cures aren't worth the side effects.

When I bought my boat when I registered it they gave me a location on my boat to apply the numbers and registration sticker ..that was in Ohio anyways Coast Gard regs I think..

No Hell No to Poly Glo!!!! The stuff is nothing more than floor shiner and when and no if it starts to breakdown, boat will look like a stale glazed donut!!! I ended up having to use floor stripper and wet sanding to get the stuff off!!! Still fighting with it!!!! Sorry, surely this is too late but turn around!!!!
