Awesome vid! Subbed. In fact, it was an insta-sub! I really like your style, vibe and presentation. I'm a (young) early 50s. Grew up on Lakes, Rivers and the Bay. And my Grandpa worked for Johnson for 40 years. Brough the Family down here form NY, where they got off the boat from Scotland around 1920. But yeah - always had boats, motors, and although we liked other motors as well - we always had multiple Johnson O/Bs laying around. I love Bow-Riders too, and I/Os. Mercruisers are my fave. But we always had Bass Boats. He got a free boat & motor set-up every 2 years, as part of his package. Good times, and I learned so much in those years. I really love this vid -and I can't wait to see more. You've got some real talent, and a nice touch around a boat and motor. Love that!

You were better off replacing the water pump anyway after ask the time it sat. At lay the new buyer will have peace of mind knowing it won't fail soon. Great job. It's good that you have good knowledge of the electrical system on the engine.

Have you ever tried an air hammer to remove flywheels. When applied vertically to top of shaft mower flywheels will "POP" right off. I've been amazed at how well it works. I cut the end off one of the chisels that came with my Harbor Freight air hammer to better mate with the shaft. Worked great on my boat steering wheel too. After tensioning the puller a quick application of the air hammer to the puller bolt will break the flywheel loose.

I can't say enough good things about CDI, I had a fairly new regulator/ rectifier burn up, which caused damage to the wiring harnesses, power pack, stator & timing base. CDI replaced it all for no cost.

Barbosal shaving cream is great for cleaning the carpet

make sure to check the fuel lines also. the oem marine lines come with a protective internal membrane that breaks down and deteriorates over time.

Should use some barbasol shaving cream to clean carpets it works really good with that brush on a drill

Another cool vid. The amount of Johnson’s that need the timer base compared to the stator is unreal. Power pak, timer base, stator is how I check them. Piece of advice, you should just stick with flipping motors bcuz the risk is far lower. I’m sure you’ve been burnt with transoms/floors in the past. Not worth the man hours. Looks like you live up north where no saltwater is found. Lucky you. Good job

The best thing I have found for the boat stains and carpets is shaving cream Barbasol trust me works great

Hey man this might be something you know already but a little bit of coke (cocacola) poured onto rusted componets will help unseize them if left over night. I used this trick all the time in the navy to prevent messing up motors when pulling fans off of them. I worked on the eisenhower when she was 37 years old and rusted all to hell. Coke saved my butt.

That Johnson GT was a great outboard, just cold natured. It always took 3 starts & then she ran like top! It was Crank, die then crank, die the. Crank, GO!!

That water pump absolutely needed to be changed anyway. You should not feel like you wasted time doing it just because the thermostat was stuck too.

I tried a puller on a flywheel and had no success but a prybar with not much pressure then a mallet on top of the flywheel made quick work of it.

Since you’re going to sell it out it was a good thing to change out the water pump anyways…..you should change out the fuel filter also since it’s a $10 part and a 10 min fix, better for new owner or even if you decide to keep it….might as well do the spark plugs also

Never use an impact on a gear puller. That is how you seize the threads on the puller.

Pro tip smack the arbor of the puller with a mini sledge next time

Don't forget to empty the old dirty gas in the tank

I fished tournaments on Erie and around southern ontario from a 285XL Pro for a few years, it was an awesome boat! Smooth ride on rough water!

Something I’ve done before is use a drill to spin the shaft on the impeller to insure that it’s pumping water 😊

One hell of an engine, love those things. You needed some heat on the crank taper. I'm glad you didn't splash it with crapped-out carbs, a dead cylinder would've killed it.

"This impeller doesn't look too bad", then we look at the new one, no comparison! That's the reason we replace impellers, they become hard and permanently distorted. It definitely needed replacement!

Awesome mechanical work except for the assault you did on that poor flywheel. Charges have been filed. 😂 on another note ditch that chemical guys stuff. Watch some detailing videos and you will find more effective and cheaper products.

I have a 1990 stratos 285 pro as well, same motor, i would definitely recommend ordering only oem electronics for that motor.

2 years ago, got $20 gas at a local marina, $10 was water, burned our a cylinder. Had to get another motor during the VID crisis. $14, 000. But a hole lot better motor but $135 to change the oil every year.

I dont understand how there still isnt a bullet proof boat engine in 2024 that is reasonably priced. Like a simple design.
