If you haven't looked into it you may find some use out of a battery-powered hot glue gun. Ryobi has one and you could get an adapter for your Milwaukee batteries. It could be quite useful for protecting some of the unprotected parts of the circuit boards. Plus that glue dissolves with rubbing alcohol for fairly simple removal should you need to mod things.

This project has been pretty far down the list, but on my list of projects I would like to do. I have a Honda generator with electric start. I would like to be able to start it and shut it down automatically. When we have a power outage, I would like Home Assistant to start it once every couple hours long enough to keep the refrigerator cool and the house from freezing. I am just getting Home Assistant up and running and learning about MQTT. I think this would be a great project for me to start with though. Are your solar panels not keeping up anymore?
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 3 года назад
The Solar panels are doing great. 5 kWh a day on average - This will be used as backup for times we are in Rainforest cover, or hurricane season when the Solar Production is lower. (That explanation got cut from the video for brevity.) Adding a start function should be easy enough, and since your generator has it's own battery you can keep the Wemos online with that... Could even monitor the battery level and start and recharge it if it's getting low.

Great videos as usual! Not sure if this is the right place to ask but can you talk about your Diesel engine and the fuel you get in Latin countries compared to the U.S. Does your engine requires low sulphur diesel? Are you able to get it? If not what do you do? Do you use any additives etc? Thanks James
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 3 года назад
We knew that ULSD is not widely available in Central America yet, so we specifically sought out a chassis that had the International 7.3L Diesel. This engine was designed for, and runs better on the higher sulfur diesel we find here... No need for additives or trying to find DEF. Talking with some of the locals here, it seems all of them have had a friend who brought in a nice truck from the USA, only to have the exhaust system bungged up within the year. Most of the Europeans we run into are built on older chassis which also have no problems, newer engines require modifications to the exhaust system, engine management computers, and additives to keep them going... I can't speak to that.

We've got an electric start 3000va generator and this has given me ideas.. I think I'll add to the D1 an opto sensor for RPM, a couple of NTC's for head temp and exhaust temps. Perhaps even a float sensor for the fuel tank. As it's an electric start there is a battery but the D1 would kill that in a couple of weeks if not careful, so might have to fit power isolator kill switch for the D1 between long periods of non-use, but will defo use a voltage sense for the battery (Via an external ADC board as will need more than the single crappy ADC onboard for the NTC's). Cracking project.
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 2 года назад
Save the ADC for voltage sensing, use DS18B20s on a OneWire bus for as many temperature sensors as you want.
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 2 года назад
Also, eTape could be used for the fuel level...
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 2 года назад
Also, the D1 has μSleep, I've run it for months off a single 18650, just put it to sleep for 5 minutes if it hasn't been accessed in 48 hours or something. Or if you want to maintain instant control, monitor the battery voltage and start it for 5 minutes if you feel it's getting too low...
