When I worked at an equipment rental business, after every rental, sometimes as little as 2 hours of actual use, we used air to blow out the primary air filter, checked and topped fluids, and greased every grease point. Then hosed down the whole machine. At the price of those machines, you don't whine about the time it takes or the grease you use.

My Dad did heavy equipment mechanic work for 32 years. One thing he always did was keep track in a book when he did what to each piece of equipment. He also wrote the date and hours on the oil filters and air filters so you could tell at a glance how long it had been. The equipment he had was: several cat dozens, 2 scapers, pull scraper, air comp/welder, jd farm tractors, bay city crane and diamond t tractor and lowboy. This equipment ranged from 13 yrs old to 50 yrs, it all worked because of doing the maintenance. Just because equipment is old doesnt mean its not worth the time to do the maintenance. His construction company was in business from 1946 to 1978.

The filter on my car must be installed with a tool (no clearance to tighten by hand) and the factory service manual specifically says to use their own "special service tool" for this (which I don't have). Once or twice, in 20 years of ownership, I've dented the filter... and as much of a hassle as it is, my instinct to immediately replace with another was founded.

Greg from northern Michigan. Centrifugal (cyclonic) air cleaner dust unloader valve, not a moisture drain. Primary air filter element (larger one). Secondary air filter (smaller one) is also called a safety element.
@desotosky1372
@desotosky1372 Месяц назад
Is that what whistles when the filter gets loaded?
@gregforster5913
@gregforster5913 Месяц назад
No, it's simply a split rubber squeeze valve that let's the dust spill out of the air cleaner housing without having to remove the end cap. The whistle is usually from the engine turbocharger being starved for air flow, or from some other air leak in the engine air intake system piping. A clean air filter provides minimum pressure drop across it. When this pressure drop reaches 2 kPa (or 8 inches of water), it's time to either clean or replace the air filter elements
@marioreali5925
@marioreali5925 Месяц назад
Yep, a lot of people think the secondary air filter is to make the air cleaner. It's not. They discovered years ago that the biggest source of dirt entering the engine on heavy equipment was changing the airfilter. Cat used to recommend changing the secondary every third primary filter change.
@gregforster5913
@gregforster5913 Месяц назад
You are right on here. I can tell you many horror stories about industrial air cleaner lack of maintenance issues. The craziest one was where the large equipment operator poked holes into the outer air filter element with a larger screwdriver to allow air in because the engine lost power. It worked for about a month, at which time the engine power cylinders wore out due to extreme dusting. Airborne dust particles are extremely hard and abrasive. In the engine test lab, we used to use AC Fine Test Dust of known particle sizes to evaluate the engine power cylinders and engine crankshaft bearings for wear rates. I am now retired but used to work for a major diesel engine manufacturer, and have 39 years of engineering experience here.

We did that for every piece of equipment, including lower priced items like lawn mowers. We did the 50 hr on a brand new Bobcat skid steer and it showed an unusual amount of copper. It remained in service and at the 200 hr PM the copper readings were again elevated. 20 hrs later the motor seized. Even though the unit was out of its warranty period Bobcat picked up the unit replaced the engine and returned it back to us in a week. It was because we had the lab tests showing that it had a bearing issue from the start. Without that we would have been out of pocket for a replacement engine and labor to R&R. Truly an "ounce" of prevention was worth a "pound" of cure.

@@kennybaumann2117 I’m sure it is a valued profit centre for your employer and totally useless even for your example engine which was serviced by your dealership and failed at 220 hours. This would be covered by warranty regardless of course, no question about it. If it was a million Dollar+ large excavator working shifts for 2000+ hours annually, oil analysis periodically could be an useful management tool, predicting redundancy and aiding planning for alternative plant to keep the mine or civil engineering project going with the minimum of stoppages. Then a gearbox casting grenades anyway ROTFLOL. Been there, done that.

It's good practice to use a paint marker and mark the filters with the hrs and date of filter changes especially on such an infrequent maintained piece of equipment

Sweet! I worked at a sign shop for 8 years as an installer and repair tech. At one point we had 5 completely different trucks (buckets, cherry pickers, cranes), and the maintenance was ridiculously expensive and time consuming on all of them. Engineers seem to make everything as difficult as possible to work on😅

The main difference between the two is that skid steers have wheels, while CTLs have tracks. This affects the terrains they work best in, how they turn, and their upkeep costs.

Yes that is normal for Heavy Equipment... To service a standard D 8 R you have to drop the belly pan under the engine, and that is normal for 250 hours of run time in the dirt, and debris...

a tip to regular maint and making those full services a little easier. once a week use the air hose to blow out the dust from your outer air filter (from the inside out), unbolt and lift the rad to get clearance if you need to,to check fluids(oil, water, hyraulic and planetary) and grease, check track adjustment (sometimes can be done with a grease gun). if not using that much but daily if its in daily use for most of those tho. and remember hydraulic fluid expands when hot so keep that in mind when checking the sightglass and make sure the rams are all flat closed. Im sure your probably familiar from lift hydraulics. also always keep a flathead screwdriver or pick with you to remove dirt from grease pins, also dont grease the sliding area bit on the forks it will just attract more dirt, and a rag for easy small mess cleanup but there is no way you werent getting an oil bath with that small of an access. 30:30 There's a TV behind there and your just spraying it down willy nilly! REEEEEEEEEEEEEE LMAO GREAT VID and Great job and loving that old "stinkin lincoln" my buddy had one like that but Burgundy and silver he was the first to get his license and we took this one curve at like almost 90 sliding the whole way throttle out and somehow didnt die. to this day i cant hit it at more than 40. reckless kids but dang good times!!

When I do an oil change I start by removing the battery. Saves a lot of time. Also it makes it a lot easier to replace fuel and hydraulic filters. If you have to ask about the cost of a PM then you cant afford it.

23:05 ACEA is the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, though the French translation is where the initialism comes from (Association des Constructeurs Européens d'Automobiles). They classify oils into three main categories: A/B for gasoline and light duty diesel engines; C for engines with three-way catalytic converters or DPFs; and E for heavy-duty diesel engines. ACEA E-class oils are similar to API C-class oils like CK-4. E9 is an obsolete standard and has been replaced by E11, so use an E11 oil wherever an E9 oil was previously called for. For example, Valvoline Premium Blue synthetic blend and full synthetic diesel oils are compatible with both API CK-4 and ACEA E11.

You can get the air filters cleaned for less than the cost of new ones. You might check into that.

If you do this type of service on a regular basis then the air filter cleaner by Pete Industries is a must have investment. It uses shop air with a rotating head that fits inside of a round air filter and can restore it to 99% of OG flow and filtration. It's one of those things that you go, "why didn't I think of that". I doubt it would be practical for a single use application.

The main differentiating feature of compact track loaders is their tracks and ability to lift more than skid steers. Still around the same size as skid steers, they're built for outdoor projects with more space because they're not as maneuverable as skid steers as they don't have zero-radius turning capabilities.
