Here I am doing a $1000 budget tool list for new mechanics. I list every tool I would consider purchasing when getting into mechanical work and the brands I would go with as well as the reason for going this route. Over the 40 years i’ve been a mechanic I have found that buying clean used tools from pawn shops, local online and ebay style places has worked well. Save a lot of money vs the tool trucks!

That's always a good option. Only 14 years in the trade for me but the best deals I've gotten have been recently retired techs selling off what they dont want at home. This specifically works good for green techs within their first few years of a career. Guys like that will happily give great... phenomenally great deals to help a young tech starting out.

You just keep giving me more great ideas, I've watched most of your 85 Camaro build both out of interest and for inspiration on my own 85 IROC, and now this video is exactly what I needed as Im starting at UTI Nascar Tech in just a couple of weeks. Love my 5 drawer us general cart. Its basically my main tool box. If I always go back to my box to get a tool, I just reorganize my cart and put it in there. Its freed up some storage in my us general box and now the tools I use most are in the cart where I can get to them easily. To anyone getting in the industry, use the box as storage, use the cart as your tool box. And you can roll it to where ever you need, add tables for work space, I even used the lid to hold up a subframe 😂 best tool you can buy, right there.

As an avid “prosumer” DIY guy, I can attest Tekton impact sockets are solid for the price. I’ve had them for 5 years and beat the hell out of them. I would love to expand my chrome sockets, wrenches and other hand tools in the Tekton lineup. Also, Milwaukee cordless all the way haha.

"look for the deals". Best advice yet. The only catch with looking for deals is it takes patience. Waiting for sales, "bundles", and scanning eBay and other "auction" sites. Patience is key.

Over the last few years I been adding to my collection. And been very pleased at every tekton product I have added. And will continue! Not saying I don't have other more popular name brands. But even if I was in shop I don't see where I'd have any issues with any of my tekton tools. Strong and reliable

I've been wrenching professionally for a few months now and used Tekton for my wrenches, sockets, and ratchets. I love how they're organized, that they don't skip. They've been really great. I had to use the warranty recently and it was really easy.

One thing he forgot to add....when you need more toolbox.....buy used and buy cheap. Maybe upgrade your tool cart down the road. If your not pawing at it all day....its just a drawer....you may visit your storage box once per project in your bay. Spend money on the parts your truck needs, a dinner with the wife, ice cream with the kids.....dont spend a ton of money on "organized space".....go ahead and let mr. Ego in the next bay tease you about your inferior boxes....screw that clown....I like this channel because he preaches being a good steward of your hard earned money.....dont let peer pressure spend it for you. Keep up the good work!

Tony thanks man. I am a new diesel tech who is lined up for a job soon. Company told me i will need tools to start out, will be doing brakes and inspections. Ive done brakes in tech school so have an idea on what is needed for that job. However i do not know what inspections on diesel trucks insist of and do not know what tools are needed so i am just trying to use the little bit of cash i have to get as much i can. And this was beyond helpful and motivating. Thought i needed at least 3k to start out. But i jus looked up most of the tools you mentioned and am relieved that i have some sort of fighting chance of being somewhat prepared when starting out. Appreciate the information and the time taken out to make this video. You really didnt have to. You the man💪🏽

Ya good thing the brakes and inspections don't take alot of tools so you can start with those and buy other tools as you do that so by the time you start other jobs you are already set up for success. I think that's a really solid basic list. For beginners, I would also probably try to work in some oil filter wrenches, a 1/2" torque wrench (mostly for tires), and if you have any money to splurge on something I would definitely get a nice tire pressure gauge that hooks up to shop air so you can check and adjust tires very quickly.

Expensive tools doesn't mean you know what your doing...I seen a guy early 60's come back into being a mechanic after he lost everything ..he started with buying tools he would find at flea markets and was made fun of because most considered the tools as foreign junk ...yet he managed to do the work and his come back rate was lower then those who were die hard brand specific mechanics...that got him respect more than any name brand tool could never do

Absolutely!!! Get what you can afford and just work hard. Get something reliable but not over priced. No one brand makes the best everything. Best to keep your options open. Alot is available in today's market

This is basically what I had starting out, although I did a lot of DIY stuff before I went pro so I brought my at home stuff to work. After that I would buy tools as I felt the need for them. The thing to remember for new guys is a lot of what tools you buy is going to depend on what kind of work you're doing and what type of climate you're in. For example, an air hammer is going to be a lot more important for someone in Vermont than someone in Arizona.

I'm in exactly the same position. I have a pretty complete set for doing stuff at home. I think the biggest thing in a professional setting though is that you need power tools to be more time efficient. Most of my tool collection has been built up buying stuff as I need it and justified the cost of the tools as a freebie since I never had to pay somebody to do it for me. I remember the first time changing my brake discs. I was missing the socket size required to remove the caliper bolts and I shattered 2 spanners trying to get them off. I bought new sockets to complete my sets sizes and redoing the same job years later was far easier because I had a breaker bar and the correct socket. The thing that I've learnt over the years is that no matter how knowledgeable you are you can only be as good as the tools you own.

I would say a torque wrench is a fairly important tool for a professional mechanic - I have 5, ranging from 2ft.lbs to 250, but one with a range of around 20 to 150 ft.lbs should cover a lot of applications

Nice video! I myself use 3/8 Milwaukee stubby and 3/8 deep impact sockets the most out of anything. I love hand tools but power tools are the way to go. Milwaukee tools end up being worth it in the long run. Some guys I work with use mostly hand tools. But ultimately power is better. Pros: it’s easier on you (less work) it’s faster more productive=raise (more money). Has worked for me, I love my snap on screwdrivers and ratchets and matco ratchets but hardly use them because power tools are so much faster. I only use my hand ratchet if there is no space for an impact or cordless ratchet. Air over pneumatic any day aswell, no oil, quieter, no air hose to get out and put up.

Tekton tools have worked out great for me. I contacted them on Monday about a problem, replacement tool showed up by Thursday. And that was shipping during the pandemic.

I got a Husky pick, scraper, and pry bar set for around $43 in December, great value for what you’re getting! Keep an eye out of that set going on sale again, it was close to 70% off.

I helped a friends son years ago get some basic tools since he was going to school to be a mechanic and he was helping me on weekends to earn money,We spent a couple Saturdays going to some yard sales and a lot of pawn shops and harbour freight and he lucked out as he ask family and friends if they had any tool cabinets and he lucked out getting a slight dented Snap on cabinet from uncle,That kid is now a excelent mechanic and still only buys tools from estate sales or craigslist and pAWN SHOPS.

I've been working at a shop since last March and when you see what people have "bought" over the years, it's an eye opener.. If i was telling someone just getting into this professionally, i'd tell them your tool box is the last thing you want to spend a ton of money on. you can get a Husky or US General box and save yourself a bunch of money vs Snap-on or Matco. And then put the money your saving into tools. As for tools, i've heard the "buy once, cry once" so often, but you can't tell me that companies like Tekton, Icon, Craftsman, kobalt, Capri, or anything with a true lifetime warranty won't last just as long, or work just as well. one item that i bought from Harbor Freight that was worth the $$ was the Maddux heavy duty oil filter wrench set.

Harbor freight has cheap carts, I started off with that.. I bought some sockets metric and SAE, small wrench set, 2 3/8” ratchets, Dewalt 3/8” socket set with a ratchet included, extensions, 1/2” Impact gun, and my uncle gave me a 19/21/22 half inch sockets for lug nuts

Get an old big flathead and a big Phillips head screwdriver from a pawn shop or something for really cheap. Flatheads are pry bars and Phillips heads are alignment tools 🙂

I’ve been in the automotive field for a little over 10 years now, I found a pretty good set on Amazon through gear wrench. I keep my bigger box at work, but my at home tool box I bought the gear wrench set off of Amazon for $277.27 before tax and it is a great set. 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2 inch, also it doesn’t skip sizes as much. The 1/4 goes up too 14, the 3/8 goes up to I believe 18 and the 1/2 goes up too either 24 or 26 I would have too look. It also includes Allan and torque sockets as well as gear wrench ratcheting wrench’s. It’s less than $300 but will def cover you for majority of your first year-2 years on the sockets and tools you will need. Also has all 3 ratchets and extensions you will need. Hope this helps!

It’s hard getting a start nowadays especially with prices prices of tools insurance because you need them both. My dad was a jet mechanic for the 1/59 Louisiana air national guard we all started from somewhere’s. I worked on a 1939 vintage Coast Guard Cutter and it was not pleasant didn’t really have all the things you needed but I met some great people on the way. I worked in the fire room this was a steamship learned a lot about the things I did not knowSounds kind of awkward but it is what it is and 18 years old I could actually run the fire room because of the people I met the people that served our country

There are a few tools that are really important starting out, Especially if starting out in a dealer ship. Around a 18” 3/8 ratchet flex or not flex, tekton has them available on their website(for stubborn drain plugs that some one way over tightend) I Brake lining gage, tire inflator, valve stem/shrader tool, pen magnet, tread depth gage. A small plier set. Needle nose, slip joints, channel locks and side cutter mainly. These are just a few extras I had to pick up with in about a week of starting as a lube tech.

Nice list. It is pretty hard to try to get the "necessities" including a tool cart or cabinet for a grand. Good call on ½" drive sockets being impact rated cause 99% of the time I've needed to use a ½" drive socket, I've been able to use my impact wrench. In fact I own a ½" drive hand ratchet that I've never used cause I've been able to use a breaker bar on and it's longer anyway for more leverage. lol A suggestion to consider is getting the H.F. Pittsburgh ½" drive impact sockets instead of the Tekton. They are half the price of Tektons and so you are saving more money even though you are losing the 10% credit back. I beat up my Pittsburgh impact sockets and I've had them for several years now and they are holding great still. Warranty programs are a great part to consider also for sure like you mentioned. Tekton, Harbor Freight's hand tools and Home Depot's Husky hand tools Warranty are excellent. Can't wait to see the 2.5 grand tool list.

Great list. I started in the business right around when you and Justin were getting your channels going and it was a huge help. Harbor freight Doyle pliers are really nice for the $. The ullman long pick sets on Amazon are $16 and they make them for most of the tool trucks. You can find a lot of cornwell tools cheap at pawn shops because they don’t recognize the name. My rebranded ir impact was $21. And definitely go with rechargeable lights. You’ll spend way more on batteries than biting the bullet in the first place.

Great video. I have one of those HF tool carts. HF's US General line, the 5 drawer cart in particular, are hard to beat values for folks on a budget. Initially quantity is generally far more important than quality. Quality will come with time. Many starting out will be doing oil and brake service.I think in that starting kit one might need to think about some type of oil filter wrench. Other items I would consider would be line wrenches (certainly not tool truck but not too cheap here), pliers (at least 2... 10" slip joint and a vise grip) . I would check out Harbor Freight for hammers. I beat the living h*** out of my dead blows and never replaced one yet. I love Tekton for many reasons and have worked in many things but HF will save you some money on certain things and if you live near one, warranty is a little easier and quicker. So one might check HF for some things to add a few more of the basics.

Only thing I would say is in my experience I've used line wrenches a ton. I have even worked at shops where I was the only one with a set and had to come in and save the day on a brake job. Other than that it's a solid list

great advise. I saw the Justin Dow video. Watch lowes for sales on kobalt, great tools and warranty. Also look what kind of work you are doing and adjust your list. Industrial machine building and repair would be a slightly different list.

Great film and advice, Triple-T, and two thumbs up for good, Ole Justin. I’ve watched a lot of his films over the years. For having to warranty hand tools I would prefer a place like Lowe’s, Home Depot, Tekton and NAPA or any auto parts store that sell those hand tools individually. I have never liked Harbor Freight’s preference of having a wrench set, plier set, socket set, and etc opened up for one tool. When I have been at my local Harbor Freight I see multiple “open box” sets in the tool aisles or the clearance shelves.

You make a good list. The HF 5 drawer cart is a no brainer for go to tools. I completely agree with you on a good 1/2 drive air stubby as a first impact. They pack a enough punch for most jobs and will get into tight areas where no cordless will go and because of the compactness will always remain a mainstay of an impact collection as you grow. If it were me, I would try to squeeze in a 3/8 drive torque wrench and 1/2 drive breaker bar into your list.

New guy here, very young, my dad was a mechanic, and I was wondering why you liked tekton so much, I heard of their tools but after recent years I've been more careful with the tools I buy, primarily sticking to brands like craftsman because one of the days I was working on my old Ford bronco my grandpa gave me (not in working order) the screw driver I was using completely fell apart, I think it's just from how old it is but hopefully you understand my caution

Tekton has completely replaced all of the old tools they used to sell. They use to have a bunch of cheap generic tools that weren't anything to be impressed by. But about 8 years ago they started designing and coming up with unique tools that weren't generic and didn't look like all the other cheap tools. They started removing all the cheap stuff and replacing it with better designed tools. Then they started releasing usa made tools. And all of them at a really good price for what you were getting. They also have arguably the best Tool warranty on the market. Unfortunately in the last 3 years tekton has really started to bump up prices not only due to inflation and now while they have good tools. You need to be selective of what's a good deal. Alot of things have doubled in price. So while the usa made tools, ratchets and some socket sets are great for the price. Some of the tools like Allen keys, bit sockets, impact sockets and many others are priced to high for what they are. 3 years ago I could go on the website and pick any Tool and it was a great deal for the price. But unfortunately now, I feel like only half of the selection is worth the price now. So while I like the quality, design, and warranty. Some things have been overpriced and that's why I don't recommend them as often as I used to unless you can find some of the more expensive items on sale.

Plier set and torque wrenches can also be included, although torque wrench might overload the budget but still worth it when starting new.

Great list but on the 1/2in impact the first one I bought was the kobalt 1/2in it pushes 750ft/lbs it was $99 brand new off the shelf and i absolutely love it no issues what so ever

These are great suggestions. You will need some sort of gasket scraping tools. For a different take, I would suggest used tools from pawn shops, flea markets, and garage sales. I found a 1970ish SO top box for $150 that is larger than most carts and my dealer warranteed the drawer slides ($170 worth!). I know you like everything uniform and organized but finding good brands used means they still have warranties.

@@TonyTheTechnician Most of my aircraft specific tools are used, made long ago for government contracts, such as pnuematic drills, angle drills, rivet guns, clecos, sheetmetal shears, bucking bars, countersinks, etc. Most of these were sold to the government for exorbitant prices but are extremely well made. Not much help for auto mechs but not all of us work on cars (if we can help it!). They ARE all available new but a new Corvette would be cheaper for a complete setup.

I'm about to be 22 and I've been wrenching for about a year now. Maybe a year and a half. I've noticed go cheap on the sockets and spend some good money on the cordless stuff. I have a single DeWalt impact gun and it's badass. I've got the older style Milwaukee auto rachet but I'm bouta get the new one when I got some extra money. I've got two snap on rachets I got on discount because I'm a student and I've got a snap on deadblow set and multimeter. I've gotten all of those on discount for being a student. If you can get the best on discount then do it. All my pneumatic tools are older style Ingersoll Rand so I got the 1/2 inch or the 231 a 3/8 and an air hammer. If you like pneumatic imma say drop some dollars unless you can get em in a bundle or on discount. Most of my sockets and rachets are harbor freight stuff and honestly they do a pretty solid fuckin job. Albeit I'm gonna go all snap on or matco or gear wrench with my rachets. I got my husky roll away tool cart and the top tool box together for like 2-3 hundred bucks.

I agree tool truck always trying to get me to get a box I'm like I'm good no thank you, tool box 6 drawer hf u.s.g. black in sale is 500, I would go icon line now with the boxes they have with open hutch and slim shelf for storage above and one locker. On the left over budget side small hammer like a hf 3-5 dollars it's small fits in hand ball on one end and a set of rod punches steel or brass to help drive out Toyota brake slid rods for the pads and clean them up some how.

Everyday Fleet Tech had a video on it too,one thing he said was stay out of the tool truck at least for a year.Some dealers may pressure them into a toolbox they can't afford.The 1/4 drive universal sockets are pricey and not cheap,I have two Matco universal sockets that are $40.00 a piece and one is $45.00 new.Also a Snap On 10mm I paid $50.00 for

No problem tony. I've been in the business for a while and I know how to buy on a budget and get what I can. My tools I use I don't have much more than $1000 in myself. And I've been doing it for 40 years. Now I do have other tools that are not in my box at the present moment because I had my big tool box stolen a couple years ago. So I'm working out of a HF cart.

I like Tekton, but for the tools I am looking for I can only find from brands I never heard of. According to the Snap-on website, they don't even sale them even if I could afford them. Gearwrench comes close; so I guess I will have to settle for close.

Nice choices. If Justin Dow is still making video's I am going to be really upset at You Tube. I haven't seen a notification or any of his videos in my feed for over a year. I just recently found out you were still on here. Between you and Justin, I have bought better tools and have learned better organization to make better use of my box space. Because every Tech lives out of their Cart..And since energy cost have sky rocketed... The cost to produce them has increased. That cost is passed onto the consumer.. You can thank the Plantation Democrats for that. They hate cheap energy...Hell they want to put the internal combustion engine out of business. And replace it with electric cars. Which cost 5x more in energy to produce....

What do you think about the master socket sets from companies like Craftsman or Husky? I love my Koken sockets but I recently bought the Husky 366 piece set just to check it out. It was $309 and I’m really impressed by how much I got for my money. I know that for a $1k budget that’s a big chunk of money, but you probably wouldn’t have to buy chrome sockets for a very long time. It has every size and type of bit socket you can imagine, except for the long versions, which can be added later. Craftsman has a 299 piece set for around the same price. I know these aren’t high end tools, but for the price they are hard to beat, and you can use them to earn enough coin to buy tool truck stuff in a couple years.

Great suggestions for a beginner. I remember when I first started a few years ago a guy introduced me to the Mac tool guy. I didn’t buy anything for awhile but he bought me some stuff so that was nice of him. I miss the days when you could go to Sears and get good quality USA stuff. My screwdriver of choice is Craftsman acetate hard handles I have tons of them and still get them at Ace Hardware USA made. Also Capri is my go to for most things and Tekton and Sunex as well. I like the points they give you back as credit.
