I always wanted to apply thermal paste for my CPU and GPU, but I thought it was too risky. Lately, however, my laptop (the maxed out XPS 15 Skylake version) has been heating up way too much whenever I play Overwatch. Is the application process the same like your XPS 15 Kaby Lake version?

Hey Dave! As always, a very nice video. I would just like to say that for the owners of the Alienware 17 R4, it's better to make undervolting as the main solution for CPU temperature problems. That's because getting to the CPU core is very difficult for inexperienced people, like me, thus becoming very difficult to accomplish a re-pasting. For the record, my 6820HK was getting about 80 degrees under full load, and now, with -0.150V, I get a maximum of 60~70 degrees Celsius.

@Verpal
@Verpal 5 лет назад
Undervolting have absolutely no chance to damage your component, of course it won't void warranty. Actually, I argue there is absolutely no risk to overclock your component so long you doesn't change the voltage.
@DBZHGWgamer
@DBZHGWgamer 5 лет назад
@@Verpal Well you'd be wrong on both counts. Undervolting too much will certainly damage your cpu. But generally people don't undervolt that much because it will make your computer bluescreen. Overclocking also potentially damages the cpu.
@Verpal
@Verpal 5 лет назад

@DBZHGWgamer
@DBZHGWgamer 5 лет назад
It isn't the blue screen that *causes* the damage, it's just that your computer happens to bluescreen before you could lower the voltage enough to do signifigant damage, however it is possible to damage the cpu by undervolting, but usually you wont be able to because generaly the cpu architecture will prevent that. Though this isn't always the case, sometimes you will ne able to damage the cpu that way.

Great walk through Dave. I used this to re-paste and under volt my XPS 9570. I was able to push it to -130 Mv, and with the re-pasting my load temps dropped from and average of 97 to 87. I also put pads on the voltage regulators and can definitely notice how much heat they transfer to the case now. The only difference is I used Throttle Stop, I found the Intel app reverting my settings after restart. I also use the profiles feature to disable Turbo and play with Speed Shift while on the battery. Everything seems to have helped quite a bit with battery life. Cheers

I have a msi gs63vr stealth (not easy to do on this laptop) with i7 7700hq, 1060 6gb, ssd, and 16gb ram. While playing games I maintained temps ranging 87C-91C. After undervolting it lowered 78C-83C. Then I applied new thermal past and thermal pads (a lot of pads) it idels around 48C and underload I maintain 65C-75C. I was surprised on how many pad it had and the quality was very low to include the thermal past (poorly applied MSI needs to do a QA/QC). I want to thank D2D for making this video. 👍
@Wave1dave
@Wave1dave 6 лет назад
So effectively you dropped temps under load from 91°C to 75°C? Nice! I can't undervolt my i5-3230m as Ivy Bridge was the last generation, which couldn't be undervolted... However, I successfully applied new thermal paste and... well, managed to drop temps by 3°C under load to about 75°C (cpu stress only). Guess stock paste was good already. I wonder what my temps are going to be when i7-3630QM arrives. Might struggle with a little temperature throttling...

razer products imo in general are pretty trash. Also all their peripherals are strait up garbage too

Back when I used to look into PC tweaks more, the common method was to put some thermal compound on the chip, and then get it as spread evenly as possible with the end of a credit card or something. No one goes that far anymore I guess? The pressure from the heatsink should press the blob method into form, but probably not to quite the same degree of evenness I assume.

If any small bubbles did exist with that method (and the goal of it is to get as close to none as possible), the heatsink pressure that's supposed to turn the blob into a flat surface in the first place would also even those out, no? It's probably moot anyways, as he showed the worst thing is too little paste and low quality paste.

There is a good reason the manufacturers chose those voltages, do not be surprised if your laptop crashes on odd occasions when messing with them. reducing voltage raises the noise-floor hence bit-errors. This is akin to someone putting a K&N air filter on their new car thinking it will increase the power).

My laptop consistently runs hot. I accidentally left a video game running all day without realizing it once, and came back to find the CPU and GPU were sitting at about 90c. The keyboard was uncomfortably hot. My fans must have been working overtime too, because the next week one of them went bad. I've got a replacement fan, and some thermal paste, and I'm getting ready to do the repairs - I'm kind of nervous about it, though! I've done these sorts of repairs on desktops, but those are considerably easier than laptops. Wish me luck! :D

Hey Dave, awesome video man! But could you maybe make an updated video, discussing the "pump out" effect of thermal pastes. Leaving the stock thermal paste in your laptop might sometimes even be the better option in the long run, since a lot of high quality pastes with good thermals, might not last so long in a laptop on a bare die. This is a topic nobody is discussing really. :)
@AidedOnslaught
@AidedOnslaught 2 года назад
Hydronaut has been the only paste I found that is consistent. The temps are higher out of the gate than other pastes but it lasts longer than 3 days. I bought some TFX and want to give it a shot, but I just read on the back of the container "silicone". Silicone is the reason why most pastes "pump out". It expands and falls off the bare die. Wish I would have done more research on it than just go off of people's short experiences. I think I'll just keep my silicone free Hydronaut for now.

just curious, if there is a optimum voltage that can balance between performance and temperature, why isn't it the default setting by Intel? Is there any reason for the engineers to set the voltage a little bit beyond the optimum point ?
@FrostyBWU

I think they prefer to take that measure, having more energy consumption, instead of making the ideal voltage setting, because then the risk of problem would be greater, dave himself quotes it in the video, he says: "do it on your own risk"

Jason Ng+ The manufacturer sets the voltage where ALL of that series of CPU will reliably run. They are limited so more power doesn't make them run faster, it just turns into waste heat.
@bepis2679
@bepis2679 7 лет назад
They set a voltage that will work across a larger number of CPUs to increase yield. Intel would rather have all of their chips running on a little bit extra voltage if it means more of them will be usable. Some CPUs need all the voltage, others don't. It would be nice if Intel fine tuned each chip, but that is simply not feasible for them to do.
@robertkubrick3738

Germanator, but you can optimize voltage for your particular chip. The voltage has a cap at the upper limit but it is not locked so you can undervolt them.

Great vid. Tried the same thing with the same laptop. I didn't do a before and after for undervolting, but -130 mv works. Before and after applying liquid metal, from 77 to 60 degrees under cpu stress test before and after. It thermal throttles after ~1 min in full cpu and gpu load, after liquid metal, it stays around 80 degrees full cpu and GPU loads. still feels warm under left shift and backspace. The most notable difference is how quickly the fans turn off after stress, and how much computation you need to be doing for the fans to work up in the first place.

you should mention that even if the system it's stable by undervolting the cpu you drasticly increase the chance of bad calculations by the CPU (Instability). So when you do p95 test you have to pay attention to the logs to see if there are miscalculations from the jobs (it will be a warning message). Hope this will help
