Don was a dockmate of ours for years in Westbrook. Calli looks even nicer inside than I remember. Whoever is the next steward of this boat will be a very lucky person, she was well cared for by a very knowledgeable captain. Thanks for taking me for a sail down memory lane. When Sue told me that you and Rand-a were going to be reviewing her boat I was so happy for her. So nice to see the photos at the end. Thank you so much
@@YachtHunters thank you. i can't take the credit for the brains or workmanship physically put into the build itself (the arduous labor..). but those that can surely appreciate your compliment. i was one of the 3 behind the yards parts counter keeping the flow of special needs fit up and finish parts/supplies, figured out, found and ready for them. Mostly finding alternative solutions for parts unavailability and engineering flaws, and compatibility/reliability concerns. (the OH SHAT resolution team lol) (which was way more frequent than we'd of expected. but in retrospect, it's understandable knowing all of the new concepts that went into her.) the brains behind the girl, and the working team (crew), where a breed of their own, tremendous people!. I did learn, at a young age, there's a lot more to new concepts than funding, engineering/approval and build. every day was a new challenge. some challenges didn't go away with only one or two solutions.
Well you did it again captain Q....if I lived in America I would now own 62 boats....I think you could sell me a chocolate fireguard...fantastic episode as usual from you and randy...
Well I would John I would do but at the moment I am having an extension on my private harbour....because when captain q reaches 100 episodes I can fill my lot. Anything after that is yours free of charge....
Truly well worth a Q Rating of 30 on this one!!! Such a wonderful boat and such a wonderful but bittersweet story about the last owners. A perfect boat! I wouldn't be the least bit apprehensive about long distance sailing in her like Sam Holmes, Christian Williams, or Sven Yrvind. Thank you Captain Q and Ran-Day!
@@YachtHunters I enjoy Sam a lot! Gutsy guy, always smiling...Jet-Boiling his way around the world...his female crewmates are always a bit interesting, I'd love to have a few cold ones with him, he manages to do it all on his phone, certainly never a perfectionist, but it always seems to turn out just fine.
Nice to see Stars and Stripes still viable in her retirement. I was fortunate in St Martin to crew on the Tru North. We raced Stars and Stripes and lost to her, great episode, what a beautiful boat, thanks
A 36 ft ketch, presenting better than almost every other boat that you'd go to view, doesn't need much done and at no significant cost, depending on the sails. With a new engine and instruments! An absolute tribute to her owner. If I was looking for a coastal sailor and one that I could potentially sail much farther. This boat is a no brainer. After almost fifty years, to measure so little moisture in the hull and deck is astonishing. I bet, in the right hands, she'd last for another fifty years. Here's hoping. Thanks gentlemen. An awesome find.
I know this is about a year old, but if I had been aware of this vessel when the Captain Q first posted this video, I would have, without a doubt tried to purchased this!!
Want to just say... Thank you. Not sure when I'm going to pull the triger, but want to let you know, it's this show that gives me the desire to do so. I am new to the idea of sailing, and I will be a single order gent, so hearing you say a single can operate it, is VERY IMPORTANT. Would like to see,,, cruise-ability (how you think that a trip across the Caribbean or not) would be, be part of your grading system! Also, if it is a good or bad live-aboard!!! Yeah I know that everyone's idea of when someone can live on it is personal, but if one can stay in a 30ft RV, for a month, it should be a good comparison!!! Thanks again
from my experience on living aboard on boats I would do it again as a child we lived on 3 boats with a family of 6 and a dog. The last boat it was just my parents and me on a 46 Trawler for 4 years the other 2 boats were 1975 35 Rasmuss lived on this one for almost a year and a 1969 40 foot Newporter for 4 years. My wife and I last year bought a 1987 O'Day 272 we both love it. My wife never sailed before and she enjoys going out on it. The joy of being back on the water and the happiness I get hearing the wind against the sails and moving without a running engine can't be beaten.
Greetings from the Netherlands! Yes, the Dutch do make the best blue water boats (next to the Fins and Swedes) and she is yet another lovely classic - you really find the gems! Please do send us clogs an orange hat - it’s good for keeping the rain off our faces while sailing ⛵️ 🤣
Wow .. never seen the rub rail…. I have learned so much from this channel… and I keep finding out I need to learn so much more!!… thank you gentlemen!!!
Wait a minute, did you just say Eric Estrada is representing Norway? Well first off he don't have the Nordic blond hair and blue eyes ideal and second isn't he a Latino? Bless his soul...... I loved it when he used to yell "bookem Dano" (kinda sounds like bookem Ran-Day) ......
My thoughts are with this poor woman who lost her husband, much too soon. Life is short and passes quickly. I hope the boat sells quickly and the owner is sustained by the memories she made with her husband.
Thanks again for a most informative and interesting review. along with a bit of the human interest aspects of the vessel. We really appreciate the wonderful "straight-ahead" jazz in the background -- fondly known "bebop." Very classy production!
Captain Q: Conijn is pronounced Konine! Also the tiling around the galley is called "Delftware" and comes from the old Dutch city of Delft which is a beautiful place to visit.
Thanks so much for showing this beautiful boat. Love the romantic take of the end of voyage and since that event is nearing for me , I look forward to passing over the bar. Nice. Good, always, to end with a beginning...
I'd have to agree with a 30 for that boat. It's a good, solid and affordable boat for the granola crowd. There's not too many of the Contest line in North America that I can see but it sure is a beautiful boat.
First let me say how nice it was to meet you two in Annapolis, you guys are awesome. We are first time buyers and this might fit our requirements. Keep up the great work and Thanks again !!!
Very capable boat. Most have the deeper draft keel, like I have for 30 years. The sloop version sails even better. Spars are also dutch. On my ketsch the mizzen-staysail/gennekar is the secret weapon. The ketsch version sails better upwind than any longkeeler. Also in stronger winds.
Hi Gentlemen, I do like your channel and watch many of your episodes. In this episode the captain mentioned the thinking of boat design during the period of the making of this sailboat which got me thinking an episode or two dedicated to how boat design has changed might make for interesting viewing. I do appreciate the captain’s introduction to the boat’s history on each episode but a general summary might be very enlightening. One of the things I have found since looking into sailboats is the opinions of sailors on keels which seems to be a controversial topic so I am not sure if you would want to get dragged into that though . Maybe some other channels have done this but I haven’t found it. Thanks and keep up the great content.
Back in the USA 🇺🇸 just in time for your latest review Capt Nice for it's size. If the propane settles down into the boat "than you can have real problems" = best Capt understatement ever!!! A 30! Houston we have lift off! Thanks for another great review 👍🏻🤙🏻
Proper pocket cruiser. If I was in the US I would seriously consider buying this. She could be brought up to prime condition with very little effort and not much cost. I'll bet you wouldn't need to spend more than $5k on her to be ready to cross the Atlantic. It's mainly cleaning and cosmetic. Get the hull sanded and repainted and she's ready. I'm not keen on deck stepped masts for blue water cruising but if the rigging is sound, I could live with it. Little gem.
I think the stepped mast is popular in Europe because of all the canals. I would only be interested in a stepped mast on a boat that can be trailered and this boat is a bit too large for that.
It was my pleasure to meet you last Saturday in Annapolis. Leeboards!!! I didn't see any or even leecloths on any of the new boats at the boat show. Anyway. this boat excites me. I really like ketch rigs.
Another fantastic boat review, as always by you both, and what a beautiful back story to this special boat, I would have bought her if no-one else had, thank you so much, cheers!! 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Great review of a really lovely boat, and a very nice tribute to her former master. If I were in the position to acquire (another) boat I'd be looking at this one very seriously.
Wonderful Boat ...Wonderful love story....Thanks Guys....Might try looking for a Capt Q Backpack pillow so it's always with him...lol...Thanks guys....hope to make it back someday to my Dutch Honey in the Netherlands I might have to sail there if the powers to be don't let up on us.....
Captain Q and Randay another great Ketch although the Seawind II is my favorite the Contest 36 is a close second. As always another great show. Fair Winds and Following Seas from Capt Gil and the crew of Sv Celtic Lady Seawind II Ketch #68.
Gosh. I have so much respect for your knowledge of boats. And I can’t sail, have no idea how to use sails, keels and rudders. Looks like a wonderful cruiser
we have all been there at some point or other.... if your dream is to sail.... we say GO FOR IT!! and even if you don't dream of sailing we're glad to have you aboard for our little show. thanks!
Captain Q- great review. I couldn't help notice that you did the wrap up in my homeport of Newburyport. I wish I knew you were coming to the Port. Would love to meet you one day. Gary Gastman
We never know where we are going to be. We try not to Telegraph our intentions… helps to mollify local police concerned the crowds we draw. lol lol That’s a lovely town btw
Thursday night supper with the Captain. Sorry Capt. Q it was chinese take out not dinty moore. For the price of a Harley Davidson, you can go where there is a lot less road rage and not have to wear a helmet. Sweet deal.
You are at my marina and my boat was only a few yards away. That is not the 12 meter S&S that was in the 87 race but one of 2 smaller boats that they practiced on and then later used for corporate team building events. We did have Freedom in the yard a few years ago. I have a pic of me sailing the real S&S in SXM.
Vindo was the best cuz of the deep cockpit with heaters. But for the price this seems good. The French boat last week was excellent too. Still hoping for a hardtop.
what a great boat! this is one I would buy if I could figure out how to get it back down south to VA :) I love watching you explore boats and hopeful Ill have one soon!
@Ronald Reed it would be a long sail for a new sailor, though big boats I'm experienced so i could motor home through the ICW. I would need some friends and a lot of time if which i don't think i can do right now unfortunately. But the biggest problem is i have discovered that once Capt Q posts a boat in the right price range, it goes fast! I called on one and the poor man was overwhelmed with calls 😂
I never see you review the condition of the sails on any of the boats. Any particular reason for this? Considering the expense of replacing a set of sails, i would think it's a major concern when purchasing a used boat.
We really don’t have the time or energy or knowledge to give an adequate appraisal of the sails. We feel that odd part of the survey and preliminary due diligence a potential buyer. A sailmaker in his loft would be a start , better yet hoisting them in the water and the best examine during sea trial Our assumption is that they are not perfect and so long as they were not a home for mice or caught in a barn fire their us probably some utility left in them. How much is needed will be in the mind of the buyer Hope rid helps .
Nice. Could have given another 10 points for gorgeous wood. I don't sail. But before my wife passed her Doctors told me I need to find a hobby. It's 2 years on August 8th. Maybe I should take up ⛵. Find myself again.
There was a british couple sailing around and they had an aft cabin with door to cockpit, which I would prefer, because I feel claustrophobic in tunnels. Why did the producers ditched the cockpit door to aft? Is there a reason or just market taste?
