A few years ago, I got an inverted Jenny. And to make it even more exciting of a find, I realized that not just the center, but the frame was also inverted.

Funny story on the inverted Jenny. Stamp store I use to go to, was technically the guy's "private" collection that out grew and he bought a building for it (sadly like to many, he did shut it down, think was more combo of age and what to do with it). But I was looking at possibly getting a scott specialty album, which he had in the basement vault (yes, actual vault). So down there, he also pulled out a stamp out of safe, in the vault, ended up being actual inverted Jenny. It was his logo, but not like not a famous stamp. But nope, the "logo" was a picture of his stamp. So I've gotten to hold one (with tongs lol). I soo miss that shop. Not just the stamps, but the supplies! He had the best supplies I could ever find (even vs online).

For me, the SAG WGA strike has meant no work as a set designer for me, but with the benefit of a lot of time spent with my stamps, and of course stamp videos. Thanks for the great vids! EDIT: After having watched the video, I share in your excitement of finding unexpected goodies as well as the discovery of stamps you never knew existed or even thought that you would love to see. Looks like you really lucked out with some great stuff here. I am curious about how you plan to mount or display your souvenir sheets that you keep. I just came into a bunch of Canadian souvenirs but I’m not sure how I want to mount them, if I ever get around to the album part.

Awesome purchase. Just add the face value of the U.S. stamps and look at the topical stamps from North Korea and other countries as a bonus, you will be the big winner. Not every cigar box contains quality stuff like this, that´s for sure ! 👍Greets from GER, U. P.S. The banknote is a 10 Lewa piece from Bulgaria, not worth a lot.

Always fun going through looking for cool stuff and treasure, got lucky on an ebay purchase a few weeks ago. Bought an album from a non stamp seller with only a few pictures. Turned out amazing, US album of commemoratives and B.O.B., I valued though the early 40s and cataloged at about $2600. Including mint C1, and C2 to C12, Q1 - Q12, Columbian Expo to 15 cent with 15 cent unused. Trans Mississippi to 50 cent. etc. , paid $25 including tax and shipping

Love the video. I enjoy finding forever stamps in grab bag sets and just usable postage. I found a set of 37c Christmas stamps once (several sheets of different varieties), as well as a 37c sheet of 10 Wright Brothers stamps from 2003, and a sheet of 40c Rio Grande and a sheet of 70c Nine Mile Prairie air mail self-adhesives which was one of my better hauls. By the way, love the round tip tongs. They're my favorite type as well.

Nice haul! Looks like $122 face for those us stamps alone! However I don't think even Forever stamps are an investment in the sense that they will be worth more in the future than today based on constant dollars. The only thing they can be used for is postage and the rate increases keep pace with inflation. The first .41 forever stamp is worth .60 in 2023 dollars so .06 cents for something that can only be used for postage...
@silkontheweb

You did very well in purchasing this lot for $25. Stamp lots and small collections have long been my favorite way of purchasing stamps. You touched on what should be the reason for collecting stamps; the love of collecting. Stamps are windows into the cultures of issuing countries. They picture what is important to the country that they come from and can teach one much about the issuing country. I have obtained some stamps in lots, which other people have purchased from stamp investment companies; and, generally, the original purchaser paid way too much. Most stamps that have been printed are not going to become valuable in our lifetimes, but they can give a lot of pleasure to those who love to collect. It has been by my pursuing the love of collecting, and not by looking at stamps as an investment, that valuable stamps have come my way. The stamps at 8:50 are not forever stamps; they are presorted first class. To illustrate, I have another US presorted first class set issued in 2003 when the postage rate was 37 cents. The souvenir sheet at 6:04 is from North Korea. You are not alone in not knowing much about North Korean stamps. For years, the Scott catalog simply stated that the importation of North Korean; Communist Chinese; post 1962 Cuban; North Vietnamese stamps was prohibited. At a result of that, we knew nothing about these stamps. The 2004 Scott Catalog, which I have been using for organizing my collection, catalogs North Korean stamps, but only to 1975. After 1975, there is absolutely no mention of or information given about about stamps from North Korea.

It is legal to buy and sell used or CTO North Korean stamps but I believe it is still illegal to sell mint stamps which is why you will almost always find them as CTO's. I love Mr Zip and I am trying to get a complete collection of Mr Zip blocks of 4.

The idea of using Forever stamps as an investment interests me, as i do wonder if they will in fact keep their value. Will the postal service still exist in say 20 years time, now that so much communication is done online or on mobiles, letter-writing is a declining artform, and parcels are more frequently shipped with courier companies? The Royal Mail is certainly hitting harder times here in the UK. A lot fewer people now send letters and cards through RM, with almost no business mail any more, and I could see RM having to make significant changes to its business model in the coming years. Perhaps USPS will be affected more gradually, but still the move to other forms of communication must be having an impact in the US as well?
@silkontheweb
@silkontheweb 10 месяцев назад
That's a good question... and, the hardships USPS and RM are facing and will continue to face might actually make the case for stamps as an investment strategy, eh? Price hikes will be inevitable, I think... (but to reiterate, not why I collect stamps!) and while I don't send many letters or bills through the post office anymore, I do send a lot of packages... I'm willing to wager they'll continue to serve that purpose going forward, but we'll see...
@happybunny1329
@happybunny1329 10 месяцев назад
I was thinking more that if the postal service becomes obsolete, the mint stamps would only have value as a collector investment, no postal value. RM is no longer reliable for sending packages unless you spend money on an expensive tracked service (they lose parcels on a regular basis), and last holiday period, many people received Christmas cards and parcels containing gifts over a month after Christmas, some of them with postmarks from sorting offices in completely random parts of the country! I can't see RM surviving many more years unless they up their game, and most people choose courier over RM for parcels now. Perhaps USPS are on a more stable footing, but if at any point there was no USPS mail service any more, the forever stamps would become redundant. @@silkontheweb

Took a page from your book. I went to Goodwill and found International Stamp Albums Parts 1 and 2. It only shows a dozen stamps or so but, for $32, I'm really hopefull for a lot more. In any case, I think the two albums are worth the price empty.

LOL.... a cigar box. I have a number of cigar boxes which currently house too many of my stamps....... good find! Those sheets of "forever" stamps more than paid for this find. As for stamps as an investment - I think many people got turned off to stamp collecting back in the 70's and early 80's when the, as I call them, Carpet baggers, sold a lot of stamps that were "said" to be valuable, complete with p.o.s. "letter of authenticity," and of course, the vast majority of those stamps turned out to be of very little investment value. I collect for fun. I have a few stamps that are "valuable" for my heirs to someday sell. Thanks for another fun philatelic video !
@silkontheweb
@silkontheweb 10 месяцев назад
I totally agree... i have undoubtedly spent more on stamps than I could ever dream of selling them for, and I am 100% okay with it because it's my hobby and I love it. I had a really insightful conversation with an owner of a video game store awhile ago... he was saying 'everyone expects their hobbies to make them money, like when he sells a game to someone they expect to be able to return it a month later for more than they spent on it.' That's part of what I love about stamps... it's just because I think they're cool... but I mean, maybe that inverted Jenny is hanging out somewhere, waiting for me to find it! Ha... as if...

Very new to stamps. I see some of your books have specific slots for stamps. Which stamps are those for? For example there's like X slots for X year but presumably more than just those stamps were made that year.
@silkontheweb
@silkontheweb 10 месяцев назад
It depends on the album... a lot of worldwide albums just have spaces for a few stamps per country, per year, but if you get a country specific album like my USA or GB ones, they'll have spaces for the most, if not all, of the stamps released by that country, each year

Looks like a $28 box to me. Back when I owned a stamp shop,I would be called,to appraise any stamps at salvation army,goodwill etc. If I told them $50 then they marked it $50. You would have to be naive to think that they would just put any price on a donated stamp or coin collection.
