It's great that the 2.5G switches are getting cheaper ... I also discovered this switch last week on Amazon Finally I bought the TP-Link JetStream TL-SG3428X-M2 | 24 Port 2,5G + 4 Port SFP+ L2+ Managed Switch for 476 EUR. Not that far off the Sodola in terms of price. But not passively cooled. I replaced the 4x20mm fan with a NOCTUA fan, now you only hear a pleasant noise. 23 watts almost fully occupied including 2x SFP+ 10G T I am very happy with the TP-Link switch in my home environment.

First of all: Thank you for your review. As a senior hardware engineer, this thing worries me in terms of thermal management. You already tipped it off. However, I would like to go on about that for a moment. The device has an almost closed housing. This means that the heat sinks on the chips don't make any sense: Initially, the chips can lose their heat to the cooler environment inside the case. Until te latter is as hot as the chips. A fan in that "closed" case won't help either. It will only stir the warm air. Perhaps the network chips used can handle a high continuous temperature, which I doubt. What worries me more is the temperature of the surrounding components. Can they withstand a 24-hour/day temperature of 80 degrees after days of continuous use? Are the capacitors specified for 105C? Doubt it. And the solder, how does that behave in the long term at those temperatures? I'm not even thinking about the room temperature in the summer. This is a device for home use, so an air conditioner is not a given. All in all, I really appreciate your critical review. As a hardware engineer, I took the liberty to make some additional comments. Again: Thank you very much for your informative channel and the technical quality of the content.

Great find Robbie. As long as this can tag traffic for VLANs I think a lot of people will find value in it. 2.5G networking is so much cheaper than 10G and the speed difference is noticeable, so this definitely has a place in the prosumer/home lab world.

Once you get to 24 ports you should be in a rack and with it elsewhere so fans aren't an issue. A 24 port switch with Ethernet spaghetti on your desk isn't a great idea.

I prefer the following TP-Link switch which has more sfp ports, it has a fan which you can swap out to make it almost silent for £12 or leave as is if its in a rack or cupboard. Its managed with L2 and L3 functions. Plus the management side is much better. Watts less than 41 watts maximum. Oh lastly its better value for money being £338 delivered. They also do the same switch with POE but they seem to sell quickly.

Hello and thanks for the great video. I've been looking for a switch for 2 days because I want to build my network cabinet. But I think the devices from Unifi are simply better. I have a few limitations but the software is great.

Glad you changed the title! I would opt for the more-mainstream MicroTik, for example. Price-wise not that much differences AFAIS? Fun fact, Sodola are using the same boards as Horaco. I would always be a wee bit worried about the here today, gone tomorrow. But for a home-environment it could be great. I personally have been on the hunt for older 10GBe switches from companies, and have been quite successful at very fair prices.

Literally just changed it. In Taipei and catching up and saw previous the comment. Fairplay, it was too clickbaity! Visiting another brand like this one tomorrow at the Computex show who have told me the have affordable effectively layer 3 switches at this sat price point + an 8 port 10Gb copper planned for $100...which I find exceptionally hard to believe...even unmanaged. Will report back

I have an 8x 2.5g + 2x 10g Qnap switch, and a Mikrotik one with the same config. The Mikrotik software is constantly being developed and very extensive, the Qnap interface is sufficient to basic and hasn't been updated in ages. This managed switch interface on this switch is better than I expected but I wouldn't expect any further updates, perhaps if there are a few bug fixes. That interface looks like a Zyxel, I have a bunch of those. If fans are noisy you just replace them. Better to use DAC cables if possible, lowest power, but weirdly the port on the Qnap gets warm, but on the Mikrotik doesn't for 10g DAC.

I just bought the Mikrotik CRS310-8G+2S+IN and am a fan of it. The problem is the place I can put it, my connection to it is bottlenecked by my 1G router switch, as it's on the other side of the room. Not sure how I'll sort that out.

As I have posted before, desktop switches with the port connectors on the front panel are just stupid. Connectors on the back with indicators on the front makes sense. The cables can run down behind the desk or table surface, while the indicators remain visible to the user. Rack mounted? Well, that’s a different matter altogether, isn’t it.

Hoffentlich setzt sich primär SFP+ durch, da damit alle Übertragungsmedien wählbar bleiben und vor allem eine galvanische Trennung möglich ist

@nascompares

They are very good. Bought them for the new office (still WiP), here - amzn.to/3x2zShv Currently been running live sync tasks on 4 client devices over 2 x 10GbE switches (4 cables) with their cables over 10 and 15 metres non stop for 63 days. Not the cheapest, but also (oddly) by no means the most expensive

I have only 1 2.5Ghz port on my internet box, if I put a switch like that the bandwidth is divided between all or if there is a high demand on 1 of the ports will the speed of the others collapse?
@LiLBitsDK
@LiLBitsDK 27 дней назад
the internet is the speed you buy, the more you share it with (at the same time) the less each gets... but if only 1 is doing a massive download then that user/pc will get the full speed... if multiple try to download something they will share that bandwidth... nothing collapse or anything... and if they send data to/from other computers and don't use the internet then that doesn't affect the internet speed either...

I hate it so much that you need to either sell your house to get cheap 2.5Gb switch or buy property of CCP. Only cheap(215USD in my country) one that is good is probably the Mikrotik(CRS310-8G+2S+IN) one.

I just recently bought the CRS310-8G+2S+IN and it's pretty great. I'm still deciding if I want to swap the fan out with a Noctua one (I bought the Noctua, but while it's running it's quiet enough I don't hear it most of the time, for now at least).
