Hey Wyrmwood, professional tailor here, about your felt problem: if your felt is made from wool - or at least party made from wool - you can fix your problem by steaming (with an iron or a steamer) your felt at the corners and then gently pull at the material and stretch it out bc wool is very easy to manipulate by heat and moistrue. Bc... some millimeters or half a centimeter might be a mile in woodworking but it isn't in fabric. If you really want and put some work into it, you stretch those felt slaps by several centimeters on each side. You can then cut the corners into shape. Which is a shit job and will cost you addional worktime but will save you from dumping all your felt.

But wouldn't that make the corners in question thinner? I mean, I'm not a woodworker and definitely not a tailor, but I did a little bit of blacksmithing back in my day, and you can't just magically enlarge the surface area of the material you're working on. If you stretch out the corners, the corners will get thinner. I know that much because that's how you make an edge on every forged knife. I guess it probably wouldn't be a problem in DIY scenarios, but it's a high-quality product we're talking about. Replacement is probably the best course of action in this case.
@Dizalddin
@Dizalddin 3 года назад
@@B3RyL If i understand correctly. It's more like fabric is a lattice work and you're just expanding the gaps between the framework. Imagine if you had a spring laid sideways and you pull it apart. The circumference of the spring doesn't change as much. However yes, you'd be losing some compressive strength of the cloth, like if you put something heavy on it, it'll smoosh easier. But game boards and stuff probably won't put enough pressure on it to be noticeable, specially at the corners. Edit: A better example might be like if you stretched a part of your carpet to fill a gap. Each fiber doesn't have as many neighbors around to help take the load, so if you stepped on it, it'd feel thinner. But if you looked at it from ground level, it'd still be just as tall as the rest of the carpet fibers.

You should check out the language creation society, they have been able to help out with legal issues surrounding fictional languages in the past
@cogspace
@cogspace 3 года назад
100%, LCS is a great resource. Languages and writing systems cannot be trademarked or copyrighted, so as long as the typeface is properly licensed and the trademarks of the Tolkien Estate ("Hobbit", "Quenya", "Legolas", etc.) are not being used in marketing, Wyrmwood is legally in the clear.
@chrismanuel9768
@chrismanuel9768 3 года назад
@@cogspace And even then, if they reference Quenya in marketing as "this language is ____ from the works of author ____", using that language is still protected as they're not advertising their product as being tied to that property. Same way advertisers can mention competitors by name. Name dropping isn't illegal, only insinuating that you have some sort of legal right to that property. They could straight up advertise "Written in Tolkien's fictional Elvish language of Quenyan as popularized in Lord of the Rings!" and it's legally protected. They never insinuated they had ownership of LOTR or the written language.
@merlin83221

Except when the language was created completely by a person. And he did it and copyrighted it. He created a full language and how to use it completely on his own. And copyrighted shortly after. I don't know if you're ever going to get perfectly cut felt, especially when it is stored in huge stacks and odd weather on the ship for so long. Seems like you can ship it to customers (yet another round of shipping) and then tell customers that IF there are gaps, they can steam iron it and gently pull to stretch it to fit. If they still cannot get it to fit, then you can ship them a new one. Keeps you from having to ship everyone a new one, and the labor of you having to do all the steaming. Especially since you'll be shipping it from your site to the customers and it might shrink again from that packaging. Alternatively a small molding might also work nicely that would cover the edges and then you could tuck in the felt. Maybe even worth ordering slightly bigger felt and building a groove into the table so you'd always tuck it in so the fit doesn't need to be exact.
@drewduncan1541

is the felt just compressed from being under weight for shipping? what does it look like after 48 hours on the table? Do the fibers relax? We have this issue with drape in theaters, and 2 hours after you hang it, it is 2-3 inches longer.

@@malovent767678 Yeah, but I mean every woodworker basically knows this. Even if you don't use stain, if you used any sort of water-based poly or varnish you are going to get grain popping. It's not copyright so much as it is a trademark issue. Trademarks will last in perpetuity so long as they are defended by the entity that holds the mark. As soon as they let a product slip that uses their trademark without specific permission it opens the floodgates for others to do the same, suddenly there's no protection. Now what specifically might be trrademarked I don't know; could be the entire language and alphabet. Finger crossed this is just an easy to fix licensing issue

The thing is that a material like felt stretches, so when the cutter is cutting through the felt (whether its clamped or not) there is going to be some pull from the force of the cut, bringing that "off" edge off of square ALL BECAuSE the material moves and stretches. So the manufacturer of said felt can look at their CNC and their blades and say "You're wrong, the measurements are correct and the blades are sharp..." but they simply either don't know what they're doing or are not doing it properly.

It should dry faster and provide the same result, Plus the added benefit to see any last minute scratches just before finishing so you do not have to strip sand anything. So, if they did not do this, if hulu wanted to make a LOTR series without the rights to the characters, the Tolkien Estate would not be able to protect it through trademark. For you topper blocks why don't you use waste wood for the interior separation panels and cover them with felt you are just going to throw out. That would be way more sturdy than foam and would use waste products you are throwing out anyway.

I work with guitars and I see people run into this issue all the time with all sorts of maple the issue is whatever you're using to stain the wood is opening the pores of the wood and that's what's giving you that fuzzy rough feeling that's also why things made out of maple are usually more expensive because it's more difficult to work with it takes longer and more effort than most other species of wood usually the solution is to just put some water on it and raise the grain then sand it down then apply sanding sealer then stain

For the first part of the video they were having issues with the stain being applied to the maple. It is standard procedure to "Water-Pop" wood in order to raise the grain before ANY finish is applied, to avoid or reduce the roughness they were mentioning. ALSO, there are WATER BASED and OIL BASED finishes, of course the water based finishes are going to raise the grain more than their oil based counter part, BUT they are safer to work with and more forgiving to error.

They weren't water popping the grain before?... I'm honestly a bit confused by that. But glad they got that issue figured out.

8:00 My mother has been working in imports from asia here in germany, si while I do not know how the US works, i can imagine it is somewhat similar to how things work over here. Here is what happens: Container comes of ship and is teporarily stored in a zone for stuff not yet through customs. Customs chacks whats in the container (usually takes a few days) and clears it fr import. If its not cleared it either gets shipped back or destroyed. Other stuff that could be annoying: They want to not just take a quick look at the container but make a full sweep (takes a while), the chinese forgot to clear out the gas thats in the container to kill of any bugs that might try to hide (takes a while), Something got a wrong number (takes a while) and by while I mean at least 1-2 weeks.

Fabric cutting has comparable issues to paper cutting and there can be some pretty sizable differences based on humidity, blade pressure, and any number of other factors. We often see almost an 1/8 inch difference in a cut short stack of paper, despite all of the tools being square. If you need precision, you are going to need to buy oversize and trim down at the end. Any bulk trim on a compressible natural fiber is going to have the same problem.

About the raised grain issue I mean you guys are better woodworkers than me but maybe you can lessen it by watering the surface (either water or alcohol) before the last pass through the sander on the highest grit? And then do the surfacing normally. Might sort it out enough for an acceptable finish. And if it's just a guy with a roller and 10 extra seconds it's a hell of a lot less work than double scuffing and topcoat. Edit: Haha now further into the video nice job :D

It's not ideal but can't you cut felt for a large table down to a medium sized table and so on? Then not all the material is waisted.
@ceruleansin77

My thought as well. As long as the widths are all the same, the lengths can be cut.
@ebishop6922

i think they are shipping out with the bad felt and then sending replacement later. If they do that then no large tables can be shipped which would be in the missed deadlines category, plus the manpower and time on machines to do the cutting would probs cause other problems. honestly I wouldn't mind getting felt less than an inch and barely visible wrong. once the replacement stuff comes, then I've got a free backup in case of damage
@Reyn_Roadstorm

I doubt it's worth the time, effort and money it'd take to do it. They'd either be cutting them all by hand (which is overly laborious) or have to order new machinery to do it then train on the new machines (which is expensive and time consuming). Maybe do that for the future, but for now, I think cheaper and faster to just eat the cost and move on.

As a table backer the felt issue doesn't bother me. I doubt I would notice it much after installation. I might try to iron it back into a square, it just depends on how much energy I have when it arrives.

personally that tiny bit of a gap on the table felt wouldn't bother me all that much, but i suppose that is a person to person kind of worry. and it doesn't paint your company in amazing light using sub par felt essentially

@Entaris

It's important to recognize that the Tolkien estate does not claim to own the concept of "elvish" as a language (though they probably would if they thought they could get away with it.) But the Elvish language that is widely developed, and more specifically the lettering that was used, is based on tolkiens version of elvish that he created. You have to remember that Tolkien was a linguist. The Elvish language in LotR was a real language that he created for the world he was creating, and not just a hand waved "oh, they speak elvish" thing that a lot of fantasy authors do. Its silly, but it's also very valid. IE someone else could create another elvish language, with different lettering, And they wouldn't have a leg to stand on. I'm actually surprised this is an issue, not because it IS an issue, but because they went so long with it not being an issue. The Tolkien estate is NOTORIOUS for being extremely on top of any LotR copyright. To the point where whenever I hear some random youtuber mention Gandalf or Frodo in a video, my first thought is "whelp, this video belongs to the tolkien estate now". Like. it legitimately surprises me that they didn't have a licensing deal in place with the tolkien estate before creating the products because those guy's don't fuck around.

I kinda already knew they were gonna get slapped with trademark infringement from the tolkien estate. They didnt last year cause their elven vaults weren’t advertised in that fashion. NOW it has been. Putting script on something is one thing. Anyone can download the font and type anything out. But to have someone who is fluent in Tolkien Elvish and speaks it fluently, and then you decide to air the fact that what you’re putting on your product is actually a trademarked patent that they have not gotten any royalties out of...... >.> is bad bad news for wyrmwood. Of course.... its not Doug’s fault now, but it is somewhat his fault for not buying a license to sell that particular trademark for the property last year. 🤷🏼‍♂️

im surprised you didnt water your wood before sanding and staining anyways. thats pretty much the common practice if you want decent surface finish. traditionally youd use a very very thin hide glue (mostly water) for this.

The felt is for me, the most expensive issue. That less than 1% of your customers would notice... And even less would care about it. That being said, I know that felt can be manipulated, I get that you're dealing with massive.numbers of tables, and so taking the time to stretch them all is probably more labor than you'd want. But I think it would actually be faster and more reliable than putting in another order with international shipping

With those logistics, looking into local option’s for felt production is worth doing. Mitigate some risk in your supply chain, and maybe it becomes a selling point...

Yeaaah, cant say I am overly surprised. Three companies you do not fuck with or risk the ire of - Disney, Nintendo and Tolkien. All respect to Tolkien and his works, the estate who owns the copyrights are hypersensitive and fucking obnoxious. They generally come off as the kid who refuses to share -anything- without getting a quarter first. Tolkien created the fantasy genre that we know today. I'm pretty sure he'd be proud of how it developed, and ashamed of how his estate handles itself.
