I recently bought a Voigtlander Bessa R2a (as a backup body.. the price was too good).. it doesn't have as simple a system for the meter.. and also the shutter is 10x louder. Nice video :) Love my M6 with all my heart.

I've been on the hunt for a good Bessa R3a but only ever come across the R3m. I've heard Bessas have a loud shutter mechanism but I really don't mind it cause no shutter is really crazy loud, just in comparison to one another. With my fuji digital camera I always shoot aperture priority because I can shoot from the hip without drawing much attention to myself and rely on the AF to catch my subject, I also feel like it's harder to gauge exposure when looking at the tiny meter from the back screen so I leave it on aperture priority... but I feel like with a film rangefinder, in order to frame properly I need to bring it to my eye whenever I take a shot in order to frame it properly so not having aperture priority on my M6 isn't a big deal for me. I prefer the M6 because I can use it even if the battery dies because it's fully mechanical and it's about half the price of the M7

For me because film is more expensive to shoot with, I take more time to frame and get everything right and shoot from the hip less.

Very nice review! I love the M7 for the AE program, but the body have so much problems. If you buy an M7 first batch (2001/2002) the problems are: DX code, battery cover, "on/off" switch, and when the battery are over, the camera jam. When you buy a "new" M7 serial number higher (2885xxx), the camera it's possible for have these problems, but not very much, because it's much "new". It's a lottery with the M7, for these problems. Btw it's a very good camera, but I bought an M6 classic. I'm very "relaxed" without these Leica M7 problems. But, pls enjoy your beauty and shoots so many rolls of film. ;) P.S sorry for my english.

I'm glad that I didn't have any problems with my M7, but most of the time it's just a show piece. I still use my SLRs on most days.

I'm glad for hear that. I love shoot with film and digital Leica. For my opinion, rangefinder is very comfortable and fast vs AF system. Film photography it's the best way for improve my eyes, and style. But for now I'm very "zen" with my setup #buybooksnotgear.

I think it all comes down to personal preference. Unfortunately, there isn't much of a request for film in my business.

It's kinda like why spend $$$ on a Porsche when a Yugo (any cheap car) gets you from Pt. A to Pt. B. And the answer is because it's really nice to drive a Porsche. And, likewise, it is so much nicer to take pictures on a Leica than a one-time use (funsaver) camera.

That would be a personal opinion. Plenty of people would dislike the ride if a Porsche, just like they would dislike the use of a Leica.

for portrait mode, if you hold the camera the other way (viewfinder up) you won't be blocking the viewfinder and also your arm doesn't stick up over your head, meaning taking pictures attracts less attention.

I guess for some people. That's why they naturally tend to hold it the other way. I don't shoot a lot in portrait orientation. Not a big problem for me.

I love the Leica M7. Fun to use. As for me not getting a M6 is the practicality of the ON/OFF switch (no accidental shots). I do experience the DX code issues most of the time which is a huge deal. Fix to that is to tap the side of the body where the film canister is in.

Do you mean to tap the body every time you turn the camera on or how does that work?

Once you see that the iso is wrong or that the iso value flashes on startup. I tap the film canister side with my palm. Not to hard of course. To confirm that the camera is now reading the right iso value it will either stop flashing the iso on startup or the bottom dot stops flashing. I can't remember if its the top or bottom dot that stops flashing. You can fix this problem while the camera is on. Might have to do this process a couple of times or more.

Hey I mentioned the DX code issue. The story is I just wanted to send my camera in for a simple CLA. It comes back with all new electronics, new leather, fully cleaned and adjusted (plus more). Get this.....for FREE. My camera is build in 2002 and way over warranty. Not sure if Leica got into some trouble and is obligated to repair the DX issue. What I have now is some kind of optical DX code reader than contact pins. Also I don't have to fight getting the film canister out cause in the past the contact pins would always press against it. Startup time is noticeably quicker. So I pretty much have a new Leica M7.

Found one on ebay for $1500. Had a dent but functioned perfectly with a 28mm Elmarit ASPH. Stupidly sold it. I have shot the M8, M9, M2, M3, M6 and the M7 might be the perfect Leica. M2's and M3's are great bodies for the price, but prices have increased along with vintage glass.

The thing about Leica costs is that they hold their value, after 10 years it will drop by around 30% so the actual cost of owning a $4550 Leica over 10 years is about $1300 or $130/year, by comparison you could buy a $2000 camera which will lose 90% of it's value over 10 years so total cost $1800 or $180/year - now which one is more expensive?

A lot of that is speculation. Sure, some Leicas hold their value but there are plenty of Leicas that don't. Some Leicas are practically useless in the minds of resellers. If someone is buying with an intent to resell later, they're not going to be buying these off the shelf regular production cameras anyways. The real money is in the limited editions. It all comes down to making an educated investment, but it's all a gamble at the end of the day.

It seems like the older film cameras like the M3/M6 and lenses have only been increasing in price. It's a remarkable thing. But you can never predict if this will change in the future for any number of reasons. For example, if the Leica M7 is no longer able to be repaired by Leica or film becomes twice as expensive, then maybe the demand will drop sharply.

There are many affordable rangefinders. Almost every company has made a rangefinder as the technology is older than SLRs. Pick up a cheap throwaway rangefinder to get a feel of the system before investing in something like a Leica as they are definitely not for everyone.

Having owned both the M6 and M7, I'd personally say that there are minimal differences. Aperture priority is the only notable difference in my opinion. For most people, I'd definitely recommend saving money and going with the M6.

I've been wanting to get an M6 TTL in my collection just to round off the trio. I've never had anything but .72 viewfinders though. What focal lengths are you using with your .85?

The Upper Left USA 35, 50, 75, 90. Anything above or below those won't have any frame lines available in the viewfinder. It's not well suited for wide angle lenses, but due to my needs, I don't have to worry about that.

My choice would have been the MP instead reason being NO ELECTRONICS just like all the other lines of old mechanical M bodies (M2, M3, M4, M5, and M6) they will last you forever. M7 like you mentioned it would be a very expensive BRICK.

The MP was at the top of my list for a VERY long time. I kept lusting over it and thought that it was going to be my next M film camera. I think owning the M6 really swayed my decision away from the MP because they are very similar in features. The M6 worked great so there wasn't much need for an MP personally. I did however really wanted a camera that I can brass up over time. You can't really go wrong with any of them though 👌.
