What am I missing here? I live in the UK and student debt isn't even spoken about? It comes out of our income, before tax, and we pay it when we can - and if we don't, it really doesn't matter. It has 0 influence on getting loans/mortgages, if we die, it isn't passed on to anyone - so why is it constantly a topic of conversation on this show?
@iloveamerica3917

Because the US and the UK higher education is completely different and you know that so don't act like this is the first time you've ever heard of it. Google it if you need to instead of expecting someone in the comment section to lay out the entire American higher education system and student loans to you.

I wished he had called instead of her. That $400k is either not just from student loans or he took longer than four years to graduate and was living off loans for everything in the meantime. Even off that was the scenario, his interest rate must be off the roof and he is only making the minimum payment for that loans to have grown to $400k.

@greenAbbot

That's not how money works. You don't just add up every expense you're going to have over the next 20 years and bring it into the present unless you're going to add up all your income over the next 20 years and bring that into the present as well.
@greenAbbot
@greenAbbot 6 лет назад
My point is that you can't just do it with half of the balance sheet. If you're going to say you have a debt of $200k then you need to also say you have an asset of $1.6 million, which is their income over the next 20 years (even with no raises). Comparing 20 years of future obligations to one year of current income is NOT what successful business owners do.

There are several lower cost family residency programs and if you practice medicine in a rural area and underserved area and Indian reservation etc there are programs to forgive your entire medical school debt which can be a huge benefit to another physician. There are good opportunities out there to get free and low cost school and after your few year contract is up you can move wherever you want and continue to make good money

400k is high, but so manageable on this path. The people on here freaking out just don't understand student loan debt that well. If his salary never improves he could do REPAYE and never pay more than 10% of his adjusted gross income (minus the poverty line. And if we assume 6% interest, that is 2k a month. REPAYE will allow him to pay 1k a month and never accumulate interest. Choosing forbearance was about as stupid as a move anyone could ever make... He needs to talk to someone who actually understands the nuances of student loan debt, not Dave "rice and beans" Ramsey. Edit: First 3 years of repaye have ZERO interest if minimum payment met. On his salary, with a kid, his monthly payment might be $250 a month...

My guess is they have other debts that she is trying to work off while the loan is in forbearance to free up money when the loan starts back up. We will never know though. Letting her finish unpacking her question would have been helpful. Dave's advice if still correct but I bet you anything it is incomplete.

I worked for a corporate company that made websites all over the US and was paid $11 an hour... Oh and my daily commute was over an hour, one way daily. They didn't trust us to work from home on websites because they thought we would steal time, but at $11 an hour we were the ones getting robbed.
