It’s getting warm and while you can get even better deals when you shop winter clothes during the summer season and vice versa, I wanted to show you that you can get an outfit that you can wear right now for relatively little money.
Looked on Facebook marketplace, Poshmark, and eBay. In my case, eBay has the best selection.
Outfit 1
Full Retail price:
$3695 for the Isaia jacket
$120 for the Polo Ralph Lauren seersucker pants
$195 for the Eton shirt
$15 for the pocket square
$195 For the Meermin shoes
$98 for the belt
Socks $20
Total: $4315
I paid:
$75 for the Isaia jacket
$30 for the Polo Ralph Lauren seersucker pants
$20 for the Eton shirt
$15 for the pocket square
$70.32 For the Meermin shoes
$50.50 for the belt
Socks $15
Total $255.32
That is an equivalent of 94% off
Even if I account for $50 for sleeve alterations
I am at $305.32 or close to 93% off
Outfit 2
Same jacket:
Pants retail for $125 I paid $37.50
White Eton Shirt $195 - for $20
Personality Milano tie for $5 shipped on eBay, Retailed for maybe $20
Fort Belvedere Pocket square with initial hand-embroidered $65
Fort Belvedere socks $40
Total retail value for this combination is: $4410
I paid $342.82 or 92% off
$105 of that are Fort Belvedere accessories, less expensive if you bought all used.
With alterations, it cost $407.82 as I also had the pants shortened, still over 90% off
Outfit 3
Prince of Wales check chinos in brown with inverted pleats and cuffs. Retail price $125, I paid $17.99 shipped
Shirt from Luciano Barbera $12.98. Retails for $295 at the low end
The pocket square is silk and solid yellow
The tie is linen from Ralph Lauren. Retails for $125, I paid $5
Socks are from Fort Belvedere at full retail price
Full retail is $4560, I paid $266.29 and $316.29 with alterations if I do the sleeves.
Remember to weight your monetary savings against time spent!

Please, how can one learn about quality brands?
@phillipmoodie9071

@@rebel4721 I am in Australia so I can't give you a specific answer for the US, because while I have a historical knowledge, the amazing growth of Online Shopping has radically changed the Retail Market Sector, which is probably why the three new sport jackets that I bought in the Salvation Army's Charity Shop were Macey's house brand and the casual shirts were Abercrombie and Fitch line for the youth market. But the classic way of conducting the current Market Research, required to correctly answer your questions, is by A. Walking around the largest Department Stores and seperating the clothes by A, B & C grade of quality by price. B. You will soon realise, that independent of both Brand and Quality of manufacture, that there are three distinct Price Points, with the best selling brands, not the same as the best quality brands, will have been allocated the most amount of both display and shelf space. Because that's how retailing operates in a large Department Stores. Now having learnt what quality of clothing is available at each Price Point, with the difference being not only obvious, but often pointed our by store staff, you can then apply that knowledge by conducting the same evaluation exercise to the two other prime source of menswear, namely Shopping Mall specialist shops and the often more interesting source, which is the Menswear Shops that have been established in Main Street Shopping Strips for many decades. Once you have that basic experience under your belt ---- at no cost other than the worn shoe leather ----, then watch the buying advice guidance on this channel, before you open your wallet to spend real money. And that knowledge will enable you to buy more clothes for the original budget. Phil.

@@rebel4721 There are lots of videos about that on this channel so check them out. The short answer is to shop by quality and not for brands, e.g. Gucci is usually overpriced. There are some brands that represent good value but usually in one category and not another. Or some that are better vintage because their newer clothes aren't as good. Look around this channel and watch the videos that interest you.

This is one of my favorite videos from your channel. It is highly relatable, and instantly useful. I enjoy the price comparisons and including multiple styles with a single jacket. It's strange that this was not followed up with a winter version. I've noticed much more menswear in thrift shops as the pandemic and resignations have continued. It might be a perfect time to roll out a sequel. Thanks for the excellent content!

While the very detailed presentation took a long time, it was full of the details that I really wanted to know about, because I have never bought any second hand clothes online. As a very old Salesman, who was trained to make product presentations, in the classic 1960-80 IBM style, you "Topped the Class", which is something that is not well done by any of the YT "Lifestyle" channels. I think that this is the most interesting, and most practical, presentation that I have seen you make. Phil.

@@gentlemansgazette While that short term result is not surprising, as a Salesman who built a very successful career, by patiently teaching prospective customers "Things" that they thought they either already knew, or did not need to learn, I suggest that if you reference it's existence about every three months, it will still be rating well in 10 years time, because it's about basic principles that are timeless. I used to have national responsibility in the past for basic computer training videos, that even IBM bought from me, and producing well accepted Training Videos is something every one thinks that they can do, with an Apple iPhone. But very few people succeed. I liked it. Phil.

eBay has been helpful to get a better understanding of a quality garments and material and most of my office wardrobe were eBay finds. Some particularly treasures that fit me perfectly and are a heavyweight wool/cashmere Ralph Lauren Purple Lapel flannel pants (about $40), a Huntsman RTW blue tweed sportcoat ($250). I've also had some duds that I didn't return and went to the donation box but considering that I never paid retail prices, I've never felt too stung by it.

I bought a Trafalgar walnut belt and Pantharella socks from my local men's shop. The outfit looks great, is very comfortable, and I'm pleased to look so good for such a reasonable price (I'm frugal).

Good job. I would say that there are some issue I am having, specifically with the fact that for the fort belvedere items you need to include shipping which increases the price. As for the different combinations of clothes, your jacket is the thing that you kept in all outfits for a reason. It by itself starts you off at 98% discount from the retail price. All the other items are negligible compared to the savings from it.

For the people who can’t quite invest the time, the next step up from ebay I think are online stores which specialize in lightly used clothing/shoes. The prices will be higher, but they do the legwork for you, and will put their reputation behind the condition of the items. Some great deals to be had these as well!

Really great video. Still a killer deal on that outfit.

My outfit goes as follows: 10 dollar asia tourist T shirt, 20 dollar asian pants, dollar store socks, 5 dollar asian belt, and 550 dollar 10 inch leather boots. :D The belt is pretty cool, and my shirts and pants get lots of compliments from being foreign style I think. actually my boots never get compliments.

Hey Raphael and everyone at the Gentleman's Gazette, I have an urging question. Much like you I have bought from eBay new or slightly used clothes and shoes, but something came about that I don't understand, or know how actually to take measurements. When on an pair of pants it says, for example "Waist 32", Is this the circumference of your waist ? Converted to inches, mine is 42.51" or 108cm, I have all my other measurements fir the garment that I am watching, but I can't comprehend on this different method of taking a measurement. Thank you.
