In this video, I want to talk about a neat way you can turn very low-cost inflatable boats, which are the least expensive way there is to get out on the water, into something that is more than a toy and can be used for rowing, motoring, and even sailing., all for just a few dollars if you make a few low-cost modifications. You can find the inflatable boats I have bought and used in the past at my Amazon store link below.
A few very special people who appreciate my weekly helpful videos have saved the Amazon link I will provide below. This is my link to my Amazon page where you can see stuff I have bought and liked a lot over the years. You do not have to buy anything from the page, just by using my link to enter Amazon anything you buy on Amazon will help me out at no cost to you. Didn't you want to buy an island or jet aircraft on Amazon today?
www.amazon.com...

I want to thank you guys again for showing up and watching me trying to have a little fun or show you something that might help you out. I made RU-vid videos for fun years before they paid a penny and I will continue to do so as long as it is fun and you guys keep showing up.
see ya out there.

great video! Like the idea of using the floor board for a trailer. The easier it is to use the more you will use it. Have fun and be safe out on the water.

I spend much more time on the water than anyone I know with just my little, low-cost kayak. Which makes it priceless, when you think about it :) Nice video, Robb

My next two videos are on making and using a floating Lazyboy with a $13 Intex 200 inflatable boat and a trolling motor. I think you will like it.

hey CC, the stuff we built as kids was the most fun. I grew up in the projects and for fun in the summer me and my friends would walk for an hour to get to the bay and find stuff on the shore we could use to float or paddle out to the islands. we also bought a surplus raft at the army/navy store and when it fell apart stuffed it with water bottles.

Thanks for the upload! There is a river in Mexico that we have been exploring with a modified Sevylor. (you can see my videos for the mods). But for the lower part of the river, we wanted to have a sail since there is a huge dam. And we needed a way to move it a long distance over land (to get around the dam). ..... I think your build pretty much kills BOTH of those birds!! Thanks for the inspiration!

thanks Marty. I think the ratio of money spent to fun enjoyed with your kayak is close to the top of the chart.

Walmart has a selection of low cost inflatables, I just bought a Challenger 2 for like 40 bucks (after tax and ship to store) comes with oars and a pump. But the oars are kinda too small so I might make some wooden ones. I've also seen another "Sailing rig" that others have made and ones that cost about $500+ the cheap ones are made with PVC and a little DIY along with a tarp. The more expensive ones are i think metal, and cost more than the boat, and WEIGH more than the boat.

ok.. thanks Robb i will look into that.. i was thinking about purchasing another raft but figured if i have one why not make it work eh?
@RobbsHomemadeLife

hey Marq, most raft motor mounts for trolling motors are very lightweight plywood with tubes that extend forward and have a 90 degree angled piece that fits into the oarlock attachment. If you build a plywood floor you can also attach a mount to the floor using bent pipe but it will only work with light electric motors.

Oh hey btw, there was another guy who posted a howto on instructables dot kom, that shows how to make an attached sailing rig where you dont' need a plywood floor, it is attachable and removable. Just google sailing rig for inflatable raft instructables or inflatable sailboat, it could inspire some creativity for a fun project. That's how I found your video.

hi marq, if you add a floorbard you will be very happy.

Hey Hulot, I've been looking into just buying some polytarp and making a quick sail rig for my inflatable. I don't think I'll be able to do it this summer but I want to have it for next summer. My biggest problems (i knew nothing about sailing, sailboats, or sails yesterday btw) is how to cut the shape of the sail, as in it's shape, whether I need to have battens or just cut out a triangle with a little roach. Oh and I think if i have big enough leeboards i'll be able to sail upwind.

I did see his vid, it had him using adhesive and all sorts of fancy tests. I'm just gonna use a really heavy sewing machine my grandma has that can do zig zag stitching. I'll look at method #2 though perhaps it's different. I'm kinda trying to figure out if I need battens for a small sail (most likely will have one or two) and if I need to do broadseeming if the sail is only one peice (which doesn't make sense since there would be no seems to attach multiple sail panels).

hello JK, that sounds like a good price to me. if you add a wooden floor and protect the raft from rocks you should have a lot of fun for very little money. I don't have my old sail rig and want to make another but have a lot going on right now. jim Luckett sells a nice rig online but it is not too cheap, however he shows how ecffective steering the rafts with an oar is, just don't expect to sail upwind like a Laser or Sunfish.

Great video! I am currently in the process of building a floor board with hinges across the middle for easier carry and coating the floor in waterproof duct tape for my Intex Sea Hawk 2. Im considering a small sail tied down to the front but so far, it's only an idea.

If you use a lateen sail like the sunfish do, you won't need any battens. I have built lateen before but will be using a balanced lug rig or sprit next. if you can sew and have access to a machine , you can make a very high quality sail, even with polytarp.

You're welcome Joe. I have been happy with the Coleman which was a clone of the Sevylor. if you can't find them cheap at the link I gave you can also try walmart online

Robb, question.. i have a coleman navigator that i purchased a couple of years ago from walmart. It's a 4 person raft with 650lbs limit. The problem im having is i want to put a motor on the back BUt it doesn't have the slots for a motor mount to go into. Do you have a idea on how i build a motor mount or something to put a trolling motor on the back.. Thanks

Oh and thanks for the helpful responses I sub'd :)
@jkjkhardcore666

Yeah I just read up on that, broadseeming is mostly for darcon, and I can achieve shape by using V-darts on my poly tarp. Also by rounding the luff and foot ends of the sail. Now I'm reading up on reinforcement rope. I think I know or have just about all i need for making a sail just trying to be thorough. My biggest gripe right now is grommets, if I use small grommets for rigging, and want a big grommet for the head of the sail i may have to get a whole new grommet tool :( maybe I can rent one.

Hey Guillermo, I have several low cost Intex inflatables I have used before and like in my amazon store. There are more expensive ones but these are the best low cost ones I have found. www.amazon.com/shop/robbshomemadelife?listId=3IDHXEBDQ30FI

You wouldn't happen to have a pic of the actuall floor motor mount?
@RobbsHomemadeLife
@RobbsHomemadeLife 10 лет назад
Hello nial, the mount was just tubing I bent so I could attach it to the floor and have it bend over the stern, I have since purchased a commercial mount that I see now would have been easier to duplicate. if the trolling motor is light you could even use pvc pipe and a board for the mount.

I'm in the process of modifying my 4 person Sevylor Colossus for sailing/rowing. I never thought of the floorboard. The idea is to keep this kit compact for easy transportation and storage. Any more tips? And thank you for the video!

Glad to help. I was thinking to make the floorboard in several pieces which would make it easier to transport.

Seems that many people choose the Lateen sail rig for the inflatables. Why is it the case?
@RobbsHomemadeLife
@RobbsHomemadeLife 9 лет назад
ks ben the lateen sail is commonly available and cheap. It also has a low center of effort.

hello, surprisingly, there are few good DIY small sail videos on YT. One of the better ones for a quick non professional sail is by David godchild, I have his video linked in my sailing canoe playlist and it is titled HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SAILS METHOD #2 he is a good guy and worth subscribing to. If you do subscribe, tell him I sent you.
