I find it ironic and maybe this is what Doug was going for is that while everyone in Massachusetts appears uniform ie all Hoodlums to an outsider, the same stance seems to also exist in the reverse when everyone appears uniform in Penn to an outsider, when in fact there is likely just as much personal diversity in Penn as in Mass ie Amish, Mennonite. However, this does take a degree of external viewing to understand which people generally don't excel at.

@@AlainPilon what I wanted to show was, that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions about the comparison between the two campuses and their appeal towards the workers. From the Video alone you could find, that bc 3 out of 5 People of the Massachusetts shop want to stay in the Pennsylvania shop, that would be this overall better shop. This would be wrong assumption, bc initially only 5 out of dozens of Workers from the Mass shop even wanted to go to penn. To truly compare the appeal of the shops, you would need to have all the workers work for a considerable time in both shops. But even then, there are to many variables, to truly come to a conclusion. This was a really fascinating conversation! I lived on an Amish farm in Lancaster, PA for 3 years; my landlords were a young Amish couple starting their own family, and their new home they bought had one-third of it converted into an in-law suite, cellar to attic on the right side of the house. So they rented it for a mere $525 a month as a cellar, ground floor, two bedroom second floor, and attic duplex, essentially, all on 110 acres. I learned so much about their culture and really respected it, and they really respected mine. They were great people; 8 years later, we still exchange cards at Christmas! We became friends with a few different Amish families then, so I really loved this discussion about rural PA Mennonite culture.
@Emmy-mx5oh
@Emmy-mx5oh 2 года назад
$5/hr is a nice bump, but seeing as it's temporary for a month or two only it's extremely weak. That's roughly $800 a month extra before taxes, which isn't much to uproot yourself. The hotel room and $30/day in food help, but that also depends on the quality of the hotel room, seeing as that's essentially your home for the next month or two; there's a big difference between a 2 star and a 4 star hotel. Also, Dougie seems to think they should think of it as a vacation "just doing whatever you want", instead of what it is; work. Bobby's idea seems to be more realistic to what would be appealing, a permanent raise for helping the company out in their time of need.
@infinitesyntax6263
@infinitesyntax6263 2 года назад
People need permanent raises anyway given how cost of living is rising rapidly. In both MA and PA. The whole reason they're short-staffed in PA to begin with is that they're not offering sufficient pay.
@JurrevanHerwijnen
@JurrevanHerwijnen 2 года назад
@@infinitesyntax6263 I might be completely wrong, but Wyrmwood seems to be one of the better places to work with fair pay and opportunities. People like Doug have so far always said ( on camera at least ) that the staff comes first. They are a luxury brand that charges a premium, so they can afford to.. And people have moved up in the company as they improve their skill set. They hired skilled talent as well as people considered to have "problematic" pasts or "looks" for other employers. As long as it's not compulsory for staff to move or work long ways away between location regularly.. the change in scenery probably is really good for some people.
@daniellewis1789
@daniellewis1789 2 года назад
I don't think a permanent raise to the full rate makes sense, but a $1/hr bump or something along those lines going forward after the return to MA for loyalty/enthusiasm/what have you absolutely tracks. This all assumes they're already paying market rate for their industry, and I don't know either what market rate is or what they pay.
@infinitesyntax6263
@infinitesyntax6263 2 года назад
@@daniellewis1789 A $1 increase isn't going to cut it in the current labor environment. Especially when you consider the cost of living increases that are happening right now. You have to also get away from the mindset of "market rate" because you're going to find yourself behind in that instance.

I remember there being a fair bit of fuss from the comments section a few months back when they were talking about hiring someone to do a hell of a lot and wanting 10+ years of experience while offering basically below starter wages as compensation. I think it's clear from their MA work environment that it's fast and loose there, which is the enticement, not the pay.

As a college student who gets paid $9.50 an hour literally shoveling horse shit, moving for a raise of $5 an hour would be a big deal, especially if food and housing are thrown in. But to someone who makes a lot more than that, I get how it’s totally not worth it.
@kgoblin5084
@kgoblin5084 2 года назад
To be blunt, I think they're not doing the math. $5/hour is an extra $200/week, ~$800/month, $9,600/year. That isn't chump change, even to someone like me who makes upwards of 3x+ what you do. I think too many people don't really grok how salaries work, & make poor decisions because of it.

minimum wage in PA is 7.25 and in mass its 14.25. if we say thats what they hire at, even though we know they dont, a 5 buck bump is almost 20bucks a hour. for the mass guys. im sure there are some salty PA people that see that pay gap in not so great a light. so yeah money is just different where you live. 9.50 for you is meh, but to some one in PA that might be pretty good. us economy is shit-

I understand what Doug's saying. However, I think generally, people's dress, mode of talking and such shouldn't be policed more than necessary. I don't care what people wear if they're doing their job. However, there are of course some standards, because there are standards that currently apply to the whole of society. It's arbitrary, but of course it is. An example would be nudity. While nudity doesn't offend me, it would offend a majority of the public even today. When it's a standard that's held by such a large majority, and would be offensive to that majority to break, AND it doesn't explicitly violate a person's rights (because it's only in this one setting and isn't based on discrimination), I do think it's okay to have those kinds of rules. But when in doubt, I think being permissive is better. The PA plant isn't a registered religious organization after all. (Of course there's a difference between swearing and swearing AT someone, though. Nobody has a right to do things AT a person they find offensive.) There can also be much stricter standards for customer facing positions, as always.
@darkhorseash4337
@darkhorseash4337 2 года назад
Yeah I also think it sets a bad precedent to like...restrict what people can wear when that would probably impact certain groups more than others. Like, you'd basically at the very least be heavily making it so trans workers wouldn't really be able to do that and therefor would lose out on that bonus money which isn't fair to them.

There is absolutely no reason why someone should be forced to cover tattoos in an environment that is not customer facing. The facial piercings are the same deal. If somebody has to stick their face close enough to a surface that it could be a problem, or if you are worried about shrapnel big enough to rip out a piercing, you have bigger problems in the face area. Fully agree with you here. when I do film/photo on location I dress for the work I do. Wedding usually means a suit ( with or without jacket ), interview with a high level manager/CEO probably same thing, B-roll on a construction site = some reflective and safety gear, meeting with casual clients.. what ever I normal put on that morning that is commonly acceptable for them. I expect my mechanic, plumber, carpenter or electrician to wear something like coveralls or "tougher work clothing", because that's how most people dress in their field. You dress for the job and location. Wyrmwood people work in, essentially, industrial workshops.. with insta-kill or permanently life changing machines, tools and chemicals that will easily fuck you up. @@mathewcoppola8622 Or you're making a highly erroneous extrapolation based on a very limited sample set. Plural of anecdote.. Just on a very broad basis, you can already see the vaccination rate of MA is higher than PA (73% vs 60% at time of writing). That's going to get worse going from Taunton to Myerstown.

It really comes down to the standard of living in each place. Costs for gas, food, etc. can add up quickly and a $5/hr raise might not be worth it for a lot of people. Those with little to no ties to the area would be the prime candidates for moving. Also, a person's willingness to help the company shows you are a team player and will do what is necessary to make the company better. That may provide the incentive for promotions, higher wages, more training, etc. and, if worse comes to worse, that person might be the last to go if layoffs happen.
@mathewcoppola8622
@mathewcoppola8622 2 года назад
In all likelihood, the cost of living in that section of PA in less than that section of MA so it would end up effectively being a higher then $5 raise. Just can't say how much because I'm too lazy to do the research.

Do you pay for relocation on top of the $5/hr? Because the pay raise would get eaten by relocation. Trying to convince people to uproot for one month because it's "fun" and because it's an opportunity to meet people is kind of moot. People work for money first and foremost, especially when there is a worker shortage.

It's an interesting study. We in America have been taught that individuality and "if it feels good do it" should be the culture of 21st century America. However, when given an opportunity to be around or in a culture where there are some boundaries and moderation, it's interesting to see how people usually react positively to those expectations. We are taught that rules and boundaries are made to be broken because they infringe upon our "freedoms", but I personally have come to the conclusion that most (not all) people respond positively to some rules and boundaries even if they aren't convinced that those fit their personal beliefs. In short, some level of control can be a good thing, AND a mass majority of people can adapt to different cultures and accept other people who have different belief systems without too much issue. Acceptance of other human beings and ways of life is something that is drastically missing in America today. Civil discourse and being kind to all are kind of lost at the moment. (*steps down off soap box*)

Seems Like the gal in plaid (did I miss her name on screen?) might enjoy some time in the Mass. shop. Personally, I think it's good to do exchanges between locations. Skills and experiences get shared, just like culture. And, just like we see here, people get surprised and find they actually like the "foreign" environment. Plus, it makes the company feel more like 1 organization for those on the floor. As long as it's voluntary, I expect you'll get more volunteers next time you make an offer like this.
