Next on Junkyard Digs, dropping the oil pan to see what was actually knocking... and then putting the pan back on without actually fixing anything. I made a post about AMCs... Before any kids, my mom and dad had an AMC Rambler American, then, growing up, my family had a 1969 AMC Rambler Classic, and then we had a 70's (I believe a '74), AMC Ambassador Station Wagon. Tough cars up until a certain point where they were made cheaply. But.. yeah, I think Scott is right, The Eagle's stock just went up from watching this video on Junkyard Digs.

It's probably a spunned connecting piston rod bearing. Judging from the type of noise. Someone absent minded person before either made a mistake changing the engine oil with the wrong filter. Leaking all the oil out. Or somehow blew out the oil filter gushing all the oil out. Causing zero lubrication. Causing the spun connecting rod bearing. The loud noise is due to the piston connecting rod bearing hitting the crankshaft journal when it's running. Course I am guessing with this AMC Eagle ?. 💪

I worked on some of these back in the late 80's-early 90's. Yes, they were a hodgepodge of whatever a dying car company could outsource, fairly reliable actually, but the one thing that stuck out to me was the driver's seat was super comfy to drive in and the A/C (if equipped) would run you out. Yep, they were not the best car of the era, but it was an AMC so that was OK.

I bought an eagle wagon in '94 or so when I was a teen working at Shell with 3 bays. My co-worker fixed some tranny leak several times and was just done with it. His dad wouldn't allow any leaking cars at home. So I jokingly said I'll give you $100. He said its yours. It was in great condition. I did the same thing taking it out beating the hell out it with friends. There was a really steep incline and my buddy said more speed you can make it! So I did and the front cv axle popped out just like on this one. I though it was broken though. So we left it and I picked up another from pick and pull. Came out a week later and it was all shot up and looked like it went through war. We fixed it and kept off roading several more times until the subframe just came off the body or something. It was dead. But the was the most fun I've ever had with any vehicle.

A good friend jumped one of these. Like "Dukes of Hazards" style jump, 20+ feet in distance and roughly 3 feet in height. Landed with amazing graze, even knowing the driver had forgotten to buckle his seat belt, so he was glued to the ceiling for about a second or two. Only damage was that he had pulled the shock rods out of the pistons assembly, all 4 corners. $120 in repairs or so.

Me and a friend set out on a 300 mile journey from home to the blue ridge parkway and back. There were times I thought we were going to have to get out and push. This vehicle sits high. Ran over a dead deer at 55mph with no problem. Lots of fur underneath, but no damage. Built like a tank, but the motor is a no go. It was a neat fun vehicle while it lasted, which was not long. lol

The AMC six was actually a pretty good performer so I’m thinking you had a dud. My 1980 Eagle was great, nothing wrong with the six, but since I like the sound and power of a V8 I swapped in a 304 AMC which is probably something the factory should have done. What a nice upgrade. The 304 was bolt in to the automatic, as long as you used the 304 flexplate. Fit like a glove cuz the V8 came out of an AMC Spirit which has the same body as an Eagle.

Those tires are actually really good on ice. The lugs are altar flexi and the compound remains pliable in the cold. That said, the plug super quick in the mud, and wonder all over in the summer. Won’t feel it as much in an older unit, but they turn a newer unit into a waterbed on wheels around corners. Decent tire if you need lots of lug, and winter traction with decent hydroplane , and abrasion resistance

I had an 81 CJ5 I bought new, one day it started making a noise just like that. It was still under warranty so I took it to the dealer thinking it was rod knock. The dealer told me it was quite common with that engine. They started it up and dumped a quart of transmission fluid down the carb cleared it right up. I never had another problem with it.

We had 50 acres when I was a kid. We had an old AMC Eagle that we used to beat on in the fields. It was jumped, rolled, slammed into trees and eventually used for target practice. That car took some major punishment and honestly still limped into its final resting place before being put out of its misery with a .357 to the engine block. The car can still be seen from google earth rotting away in a field. Much respect to those old beaters.

Noooooooooo... my 1st car I bought. A 1984 Mercury Grand Marquis Coupe(2door) needed some rear differential gear oil. The 1st guy I brought it 2 said it needed whole new rear end. I knew that wasn't the truth even tho I'm not mechanic & only 22. He than tired to say you should sell it to me and I'll fix it up to run in my demo derby. I told him he was crazy and found another guy I knew of with a shop and knowledge and he fixed her for me for 190bucks! Thank God for the other guy Michael!

That's because it was built right, not like modern engines that explode before they even think about knocking that loudly. This is what a skookum engine looks and sounds like; absolute fucking hell and still shrugging off a day's worth of trail beating. This engine shows why I refuse to accept as fact anyone who tells me modern engines are built better. They just simply aren't. They won't tolerate this kind of shenanigans.

That AMC may sound like a pneumatic hammer falling down an elevator shaft, levels of power so low that it wouldn't be able to pull a priest off a choir-boy, and have 'Clark Griswold' grade bodywork, but... Damn it looked like a lot of fun! I hope we get to see this Eagle again in the future, and hopefully on a track that has, um {clears throat} less safety regulations.

@That_AMC_Guy
@That_AMC_Guy 2 года назад
Funny thing is.... even when AMC's do have a rod let go, it almost never ventilates the block. Might go out through the pan, though. AMC blocks are heavy duty nickle-iron. When my machinist did my 401 a few years ago, I commented on using a diamond bit when he bored it out as an AMC block will eat steel bits. He didn't believe me. He phoned me mad as hell one day when he was boring out the block and he claimed it was taking a one and one half bits to bore a single cylinder. I asked if he was using diamond bits, to which he replied "no". He then switched to a diamond-tip bit and it took only two bits to to re-bore the whole block. AMC stuff was tough as nails. They were always 4th place in a three-place race. They had a thing or two to prove. Let's also not forget that even after Chrysler acquired AMC, Chrysler promptly discontinued their Slant 6 and produced the AMC six all the way 'til 2008. Not only that, but Chrysler took AMC's V8-head technology and applied it to their LA-based V8s and that's where we get the lovely "Magnum" engines of the 90's and early 2000's.

If cars could be happy this one would have been ecstatic to get out of that guy's yard and back driving again. I once drove my 79 Mustang 302 back from CA to PA with the rod knocking like that up until I was only 80 miles from home. Then it seized. Just turned the stereo up loud along the way and added oil at every gas stop. The engine had 270k miles on it. I'll never forget the mechanic at the service station we coasted into. He was screaming, YOU BLEW YOUR MOTOR!! I'm like yeah that ship sailed over 3k miles ago. It was so loud people driving by me would honk their horns and motion to my hood :-) I was also blowing oil all over the side of my car.

I owned two Eagle sedans in the '80's - and four Jeep CJ-7's since. Always referred to AMC as "PMC" OR "Poor Motor Company" because they used whatever parts they could scavenge from the other manufacturers. The Eagles were tough little beasties, and the one that had the automatic 4wd (which would come on in the summer when you turned on the AC!!) managed to suffer through the first series of repairs I made on my own without paternal supervision. Kudos to AMC for hanging onto the old Nash 258 straight six - it may not get you there quickly, but it WILL get you there. Nuts, now I want another one. 😂

My neighbour loved the 4x4 amc's and had a couple of eagle sedans, he spent quite a few hours each winter pulling people up hills and out of ditches, when they run they're a lot of fun and the seats aren't too bad either :) (and yeh, I'd jacked the roof straighter, would-a took 20 minutes or less :( Never the less a fine adventure!
