Taking your car out for her maiden voyage after you've spent months buying parts, waiting for shipping, using every weekend to wrench on her. And then, she finally fires up. There's no other feeling like it. When I finally fired up my 69' Datsun 510, I drove it to Little Caesars and ordered a pepperoni pizza. Ate the whole thing right there in the parking lot with the biggest grin on my face. Miss that car.

What a find. I'm a fellow Iowan, live about a half hour north of ya. About 20 years ago I had a neighbor give me a 1970 Amc Hornet that had been in their machine shed since the 80s. I messed around with it off and on over a few weeks and got it running and driving, it's been a fair weather cruiser for me ever since. it's almost the same green exterior color with red and green plaid interior. It has the smaller 232 inline 6 and a 4 speed. It's not a fast car, it's not a "cool" car, but pretty much everytime I drive it anywhere a random old timer will wonder over and tell me about how they haven't seen an Amc in decades and ask me all about it, people still seem to have a sweet spot in their hearts for them.

Wow. This is the first time I saw this channel. I was attracted because a coworker of mine waaaay back in high school drove a gremlin. His was a ‘semi automatic’ but the color green no matter what! I don’t know ANYTHING about cars, and I am still astonished that it would even start let alone run. I am inspired to learn more about vehicles. Especially those from our past. If this old Gremlin could work after decades of neglect, then it proves that anything is possible with a little know how ✌️❤️🔥

semi automatic or automatic? semi auto means that it is automatic but has a function to allow it to switch to manual mode, like what some newer cars have. for example a 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports is a automatic, but I can move the stick into manual mode and then I can use the shifter levers on the steering wheel and shift manually. but a automatic just has one lever that has a P for park, N for natural, D for drive, a D1 and D2, and sometimes a D3, and an R for reverse. I don't think we had automatic/manual (semi automatic) cars back then.

A buddy of mine had a Pacer in HS. One time, he, another friend, and I were riding around doing nothing but causing trouble. Back in the day, they sold these soda bottles that were around 12 oz. and were glass with this plastic thin foam type stuff on it that went around the bottom. You could carefully pull the foam down below the bottle, creating a 2-3" air pocket. Then, if you hit it right, it would make a loud popping noise. So my buddy in the front seat had done a bottle just right and we drove right by these two dudes walking on the sidewalk. My friend "pops" that bottle and it was perfect -- sounded just like a gunshot blast and those two guys hit the ground! We kept driving. I don't know if they ever figured out it was us, but if so, I'm sure they were pissed! Just a small sample of the trouble we got into in that car.

However, I am surprised this car does not have the 4 gauge pod beneath the middle of the dash or the gated floor shifter as those are found on all the Gremlin X cars I have seen. I bought a new '72 and a '74 Gremlin and they were great cars, both with the 258 motor, Chrysler Torqueflite auto trans, A/C, P/S and P/B. Think I paid 1900 for the new 72 and 2200 for the '74. Excellent, dependable and inexpensive cars for my young family. You see these "worst car" lists and they will usually have a Gremlin. One of my most vivid memories of that car was when, on a sub-zero day here un upstate NY, my wife and went to a store in a town about 30 miles north of home. The driver's door had rusted so that I had to lift up on it in order to open or close it, and when I got back in to start for home, I shut the door and the entire drivers side window shattered into tiny pieces, landing right in my lap! the door had rusted right through at the window posts. Kevin....I appreciate you so much for this Video...I have been an AMC Gremlin owner since i was 13years old...My 1st one was a 1973 AMC Gremlin that was given to my by my late grandfather (fully loaded 258 auto car) he bought it off the father of my best friend (he still is my best friend to this day) car had been sitting for a very long time so we pulled the engine/transmission out bought a 93 Dodge 9 passenger van for the drivetrain to go in it...but unfortunately other projects always came before it so she never got finished...& The 2nd one i bought for $900 after saving up my pay checks from my job as a paintball ref...Drove almost 2hrs 1 way to get it...Its a 1970 Base model with a 199 & 3 speed manual... Unfortunately the previous owner had put water in it instead of Antifreeze & the block full of water froze & cracked the head & block....So im currently in the process of starting both projects back up...The 73 is going to be getting the 5.9 with the auto just like pop wanted...BUT...the 70 is going to be getting a K series Honda Engine mated to a world class T5 & used as a daily driver....So with all of that being said....I would absolutely LOVE to add yours to my collection...if you're interested in selling it please let have the honor of looking after such a beautiful gem of American Motors history!!!!

I love when you guys do cars like this, the oddities. I'd honestly love to see you guys go back to the farm where you got the S10 and the GMC 1500 from and work on the Buicks. Those 3800s are indestructible and have a semi following now, especially the forward hooded one. I'm working on a Celebrity myself and they're classic GM, will run forever, the rest just comes off over time.

I was in High School when the Gremlin first came out and took one for a test drive. It was a 3 on the floor and had a dealer installed(?) fabric sunroof like the older VWs did. I loved it but being the broke ass kid that I was...it wasn't to be had. This one is definitely a keeper and I'm looking forward to more videos. from the both of you. You are both so positive and have great sense of humor. I also have an Iowa connection. I was born in Clarinda down in the SW corner of the state and still have relatives scattered around there. I used to spend my summers at my Grandma's as a kid and loved the small town atmosphere. Keep the videos coming and I'll be watching.

My first car was a '73 w/ 4.2 in mid 80's Loved that car, never let me down. I did however drop a 304, 3- speed in it out of a Levi's edition. Retained original rearend and ate Mustang 5.0's and Nissan 300x's for breakfast light to light. Seeing you revive this gem (not crap car) brought a tear to my eyes. Thank You so much!!

This episode brought back memories. Way back when I owned a used Gremlin that ran great after a little work. On the way back from Montreal to Long Island, I heard the distinctive sound of a belt being thrown. Since my steering was fine, I knew it was the fanbelt. I pulled over to make sure the belt was clear and wouldn't take out anything else. The water pump was seized. I had a good 10 miles to the next exit, so I started driving. I quickly realized the temp stayed normal if I maintained 60 mph. Since it was late at night with little traffic, I just kept going. No problem doing the last 200 miles.

Neat little car... A survivor. I'm 45 and my very first ride in a car was in a Gremlin that my folks had at the time, Up through the 80s they were plentiful then most of them went to rust away or get crushed. This car is nice enough to be worth a new interior and all the other work.

A win for AMC 's gremlin. That shot on the road when you got out for the wrench was really cool. The green , a favorite color of mine , and the black wheels was the right look for that car. Get proper tires and leave it alone , well maybe nice redo on interior. Very cool car. ❤👍👍👍✌

Tip for cooling down an overheated engine: don’t open the radiator cap, keep the engine running, then take a coke bottle filled with water and drizzle over the top of the radiator. It will cool down in no time and be a lot less dangerous.

Kevin, you are not weird. I loved the looks of those. I had a 1972 gremlin Orange with black grill and black striping on the side. It had a factory 304 V8 two barrel. It ran awesome. It had a shift kit. Second gear rubber was easy. You could set it a stoplight and just posi the two tires very slowly and make the weirdest squeal noise lol until I wrecked it when somebody cut me off in fort Wayne doing 45 I locked up the brakes went sideways into a guardrail. Hit so hard at buckled the rear floorboards and I bent the steering column and push the dash up against the glass. No seatbelt. But I still walked away from it. I've watched almost all your videos. I feel like I know you. You would be so easy to talk to if I ever ran into you. Keep up the great work

I absolutely LOVE this 'Rated X' adventure with the Gremlin, so jealous because it's so rust-free! I have a '74 AMC Matador coupe the exact same interior/exterior color combo, drivetrain,a d factory a/c that I did basically the same thing you did in your video a few years back to get her home under her own power after sitting for MANY years! On the way back home some chap pulled up next to me at a traffic light and offered to buy it on the spot as his dad had one just like it back in the day and his dad (and he) LOVED that car from new and all the years his family had it! I miss AMC, Marlins, Matadors and Gremmies forever... ❤

Next time turn on heater to check if engine has water. The heater bi- pass the radiator. Should heat drops slowly while heater full blast. There is good chance water pump impeller or you out of water. Great way for new engines or rebuilds to make sure fluid in engine. Also it’s impossible to touch any part of cat if over 212 F. Your finger tips is very accurate gauge. If you can hold 5 secs it’s probably 160 F. I owned a radiator auto repair shop before. Aaa Radiator in San Francisco calif

It's amazing to see you get the Gremlin to its new home running as shakey as it did. Not that there was any doubt you would, one way or another. I watched Dal'un at PBG do some body work on the 'Silver Dollar' Silverado tonight and there was a teaser referencing the up and coming collaboration for our vtewing pleasure next week. Looking forward to that for sure. I'm guessing as of this moment you're on your way, so stay safe and have too much fun, it is possible. Good night all.

I owned a 1971 Gremin X. I bought it before I went into the Navy and traded in on an AMC Pacer Wagon after I got out of the Navy 6 years later. I t was a great little car but with a budding family I needed to upgrade. The Pacer was new and was on the dealership lot for 2 years. Needless to say I got a good deal as everyone thought it was ugly. I drove it for another 10 years before I got rid of it .
