In this video I walk through how to change your carpeted stair landing to wood. All of my other stairs were wood except these two large landing steps. The carpet had to go!
I use a 5mm thick piece of plywood I got at Lowes for $16, some wood filler, and some paint. I think it turned out great.

@@taylorstools777 Yes we are, we're doing a renovation on our house and was trying to figure out what to do with the landing because of the particle board subflooring. We painted our stairs the same as yours too.

@@taylorstools777 Removed the old carpet and working on removing all the staples. I’ve never done anything like it before. I have the old stair treads in pine 2x10’s will have to remove the old bull nose. And do work on the landing in a reflooring covering of some kind. I’m trying to get my head to clearly think this job though.

By far the best video I have found on stair landing and stair nosing. Thank you Taylor! About to tackle this project this month and I pretty much have that exact landing. I have a couple questions for you: 1 - Where did you buy the new stair nosing? When trying to get the nosing to be even, did you sand with sand paper or a sander? 2 - Can I just use the existing nosing I have and sand down the particle board/sub flooring? 2 - When you glued down the plywood you used screws, can I use my nail gun to nail it down for extra security? 3 - Where can I find your video on the wood filler you used? Thank you Taylor! Excited to see if mine turns out as great as yours.

Thank you for the comment! 1. I made this out of a scrap of wood I had in my garage. I used a router but to round over the nose. I used a sander to save time. 2. Possibly. It all depends on how it fits. The particle board subfloor is not meant to be what you walk on but you technically could. 2. I think you could use nails. You could probably get away with just glue as well. 3. Go go my videos and look for “Varathane High Performance Wood Filler Review and Demo”. Come back if you have more questions or to share your results!

What kind of wood did you use for that plywood landing? It looks very smooth and clean

This is a 5mm plywood from Lowes! it is moderately smooth and only $15 here in Columbus. Thank you for the question, please subscribe!

I want to do the same thing, but instead of paint, could I stain plywood to make it match the existing stairs?
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 3 года назад
You probably could but you may need to buy a higher grade sanded plywood than I did. I would buy a small piece and try and color match your existing stairs before you commit to the project.

Is that piece of smooth plywood?? Is that that your permanent flooring on the landing? I have this exact step-up landing to stairs to 2nd floor. I am going to use Tread Fast for steps and need some advice on the landing area. Thanks!!
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 Год назад
Yes it is a piece of smooth plywood on top of the particle board subfloor. It laid perfectly flat and has held up well so far. The paint has held up really well.

I have a similar situation with my stairs and will probably go this route. Quick question (honest question, not criticism): could a moisture barrier be necessary?
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 2 года назад
That is a great question. Are you saying under the plywood? I think only time will tell. Mine is doing good so far and looks basically the same as it did day one. Are you planning on painting them as well?
@timf5963
@timf5963 2 года назад
@@taylorstools777 Right, under the painted plywood. So it would be the subfloor, moisture barrier, then the painted plywood. Not sure if that is even logical or necessary. I'm planning on painting. Right now the landing has laminate planks, and I don't believe there is a moisture barrier; they've been in place about 15 years. When I take them up, I'll see how they look.
@pelicus4
@pelicus4 2 года назад
I’m considering the if a moisture barrier is necessary as well. If you did a moisture barrier, where would the subfloor adhesive go (if necessary)? Glue, moisture barrier, glue, plywood? How has the plywood on subfloor held up since the install?
@timf5963
@timf5963 2 года назад
@@pelicus4 great question. I believe my question originated from lack of experience and overthinking. Definitely wouldn't put glue/adhesive over a moisture barrier. Side note, I pulled up the laminate planks on my landing. No signs of mold or moisture damage. I painted the planks and put them back down.

How did you make the new nose? Im in a similar situation. I stained my stairs but the landings are in terrible shape.
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 2 года назад
I used a piece of wood I had laying around. I used a round over router bit to round the nose and cut it on my table saw. They sell similar products at the big box hardware stores I believe.
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 2 года назад
A word of caution with stain. Even the same stain on the same type of wood can be tricky to match. Do plenty of testing on scrap pieces of wood. Have you tried to remove the existing noses yet?

How did you make the lip? and what is it made of?
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 3 года назад
Jamie, good question. It is solid wood. I used a router and a round over bit. I predrilled a few holes and screwed it into the stairs. Please subscribe!
@mpkane24
@mpkane24 3 года назад
@@taylorstools777 How did you know what thickness to make the roundover? And did you just use a 2x4 or something and round it over?
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 3 года назад
I appreciate the follow up. I see now that I didn't do a great job of answering Jamie's questions. It is actually some reclaimed wood I just happened to have in my garage. It may have been some old cedar actually. Just used what I had. Dimensions are probably close to 1.25"x2.5' then rounded over on both sides of the nose to make them connect as once smooth lip. I just measured the other stair noses to make it look as close to those as possible. I did a shallow pass with the round over bit and just went deeper and deeper on each side until they connected. Does that answer your question?

@@taylorstools777 I think so.. It's attached to the wall as well as a railing post so I've decided to just leave it in and work around it. Hopefully the end result looks as good as yours!

So it _is_ absolutely necessary to take off the nose of the landing. I was really hoping somebody had started selling overlays that could sit flush with the new flooring. I've done everything else except the landing because I don't trust myself to attach a new nose and still be safe. 😩 Would've loved to see details of those first few steps in the vid.
