Although the mechanics of the rebuild are critical, the most important aspects you nailed are the oem style seat cover, decals and fork boots. This seemingly small detail is what brings those of us that raced this bike right back to 1986.

At first I thought it was a Honda XL350 from the 1986 movie The Wraith.....As a kid I thought it was the XL600? Instead of the 350. I so wanted the Dodge M4S and the Honda XL lol.....I just checked the 350 had a 6th gear,22-ish hp & got like 86 mpgs. Top speed of 85-ish mph. The 600 only had 5 gears more hp,around 46 and 100 mph but only like 46mpgs. Not sure how much a 6th gear would bring hwy mpgs up. But if it'd add 20 more mpgs. I think it'd be well worth it. To make a good dual sport/true off road adventure bike.

A good tip put a nickel in the ends of your grips so if the bike falls the ends won't go through.

What a beautiful bike, you did a fantastic job restoring it to its original beauty...just like I remember them back in the 80's when i was a young whipper snapper going crazy on these. I had the exact same model but the CR250 for many years, rode that bike all over the mountains of Saddleback Orange County Califiornia and even Big Bear mountain, without ever having a problem. What a legend. Thank you!

I remember going to the Honda dealership with my brother and father because we wanted to buy a set of these, but the dealer wouldn't move a nickel on the price, so my old man walked. It turned out Honda only imported X amount of these, and it was far less than what the demand was, so dealers already had most of them sold before they even showed up. We ended up going to the Suzuki dealer and he moved considerably on the price and we ended up bringing home a 1985 RM 125 (mine) and 1986 RM 250. That Full Floater rear suspension linkage was a thing of beauty on the track. The engine was an upper mid-to-top-end monster! I didn't realize just how heavy all that linkage was until I traded it in a couple years later for the 1987 model. It was huge.

@bobbyd4400 They were all top-end, plus the suspension was supreme back then. This was the first year for the cartridge forks, which were light years better than the regular forks, and like I said, the absence of all that rear linkage really lightened up the back of the bike. It felt twenty pounds lighter than the '85 model, but the design of the Full Floater made the rear of the bike track beautifully through the rough stuff like Unadilla.

I think he's more worried about the bottom line, which you really can't blame him for. I used to leave small issues like this alone on purpose as a negotiation point. When a buyer points them out and I give them a small break on the asking price, they feel as if they're getting over a bit, but it's all a part of the plan.

A little trick for removing grips is to pull the lip up a little and shoot air between the grip and the bar. It will puff up the grip and will slide off easily, then when installing do the same thing and the grip will slide right on with no effort. 😊

It started immediately when you stopped twisting the throttle. This is at least the third time I've mentioned this to you. a two stroke will not enrich with the throttle. At best it will allow a slightly high idle position.

I remember being at Southwick for a typical local race early in the morning watching the fog dissipate from the sun burning it off and the smell of two-stroke in the air. This was back in the mid-eighties in the NESC - the premiere organization in New England for competitive motocross. It wasn't much later when the experts were at the gate about to hit the track for practice. I remember hearing these 125cc bikes screaming at full throttle cutting through the deep sand. I can still remember the smell of burning-hot exhaust pipes as the bikes flew past the fence. Guys like Joe Waddington, Badger Dzielak (?), Todd Richotte, Wemyss Scott, Jojo Keller, Pat Barton, and so many more of New England's fastest. Thanks, Joe for digging up one of these little gems. These memories will last until my final day. Great job. 👍

I like your videos, but I would never put stuff back together as dirty as you do. The time to clean it is when it is disassembled. That being said, good job on the rebuild. You need a vapor hone to clean off those parts. Your cylinder would have come out looking like new. Always change both sprockets AND the chain at the same time, otherwise, you will just eat up the new parts with the old worn out parts. It sure is pretty.

Looks like a good side hustle could be media blasting & cerakote & powder coating parts. Plus would probably help to sell bikes. When people see it's been rebuild along with nice looking coated parts.

This dude is doing this for a living. He cleans stuff up enough and we don’t always know what his plan is for the bike next. His obvious talent is for fixing broke shit and getting it running. He is not a custom builder. That’s somebody else. This dude is meat and potatoes. Fix the broke shit. That’s why he gets 25,000 views in the first day. It’s a challenge with the end goal is rip the beast in the land. Looking pretty is that Sabo dude. I prefer to watch the dude figures things out over watching a 45 minute commercial for high end parts and tools.

This guy is a RU-vidr for a living. The bikes he fixes are just gravy. People are just offering ideas on how to clean these things up. He has the shop space and clearly the money to support a couple of tools which if employed, would make his work way better.

But what you don’t understand is , if some new kid comes on this channel and thinks it ok to leave things dirty and saved his money all summer to rebuild his bike , and the thing blows up an hour later , you can thank this guy. If he wants to show “practices “ of this trade , then show it correctly. Stop being cheap and buy a damn parts washer Joe . 100 bucks from harbour freight. And stop using gasket maker on everything.

The top adjustment on the throttle is for cable slop only ! Idle adjustment is at carb.

Tips, 3m super 77, is what I spray on the seat foam. I also use my heat gun to warm up gently the vinyl. So it's easier to work with. The 3m super 77, prevent the vinyl lifting off the foam. A plastic polish kit, may be something to think about, 1,000 and 2,000 grit wet sand and 1 micron polishing compound for plastic works great and a hand buffer. I'd probably have done that before applying stickers. I'd have done all the plastics. Water and soap, 2 tsp. To that bottle. And a vinyl scraper. For bubbles. Then let dry, before peel off. However old decals, seem to need to be heated up some, for the pre mask tape to come off easier in some cases. Also a little heat helps with it sticking better. Basically 1 to 2 medium fast swipes with it.

I would rebuild the front shocks to ,they looked a bit soft when you kickstart it in the first video. Also if you change a worn sprocket it is always better to do the front and rear and chain at the same time. Now you run a have worn chain on a new back sprocket .This will only make the new back sprocket faster in to a sawblade again. Maybe you did replace them off camera. But hey ,this is a keeper. I was 16 when this model came out. And at that time Honda had the 22:59 first watercooled 50cc here in Europe ,the MTX dirtbike and the MBX streetbike. Both beauty’s.

@@maxhartog2236 : Yeah, Honda were the best light 50 cc bikes to tune at that time, here in Belgium the speed limit was 40 Km/h for a 50cc when you were 16 until 18 you needed a drivers license . The MTX and MBX and even their older brothers the MT-5 and MB-5 could easily run 110 Km/h by only taking the restricted exhaust pipe off and some port polish and change the jets in the carb. Had a couple of tickets back in the time when the police did a speed control. They parked at the bike exit at the schools with their roller bank to measure the speed, they put the back wheel on the roller bank and ran them through the gears. You got a ticket and a week time to show up at the police station to control if your bike didn't get faster than 40Km/h . As soon as you got home off with the restriction parts and ride until you get the next speed control.😉 Oh the 80 's what a nice time for teenagers,i miss that time.🥲

@@jacksat2252 Here in the Netherlands i can't remember restrictions. We just bought 70cc cilinders with 18mm carbs. And the crazy part was by law we needed to ride these rockets on the bicycle road usually seperated on the right side of the regular road for cars.

@@Odder-Being Same here in Belgium only allowed on bicycle roads or paths. Same with mopeds here in the 80 's de Honda Camino was hugely popular and you had the choice to ride a restricted to 25Km/h without a driver's license or 40Km/h with a driver licence. I think you guys in the Netherlands were allowed to ride at the age of 15 or am i mistaken?

@@jacksat2252 It was 16 without license but that all chanced in the scooter era. Now you need a license even for 25km/h. Its really about discouraging the youth from driving scooters. They just made it to expensive, license 700 euro including lessons etc. Buying scooter 1000 euro. So you spent 2000 euro at age 16 to drive a scooter and 2 years later another 2500 euro for your car license. So you see what they did here.

Love the Videos! Just a Tip from me to make a job easier. Use Hairspray to put on new Grips. Just spray it on the Bar. It'll slide on easy. Then it will harden and dry. They will stick lovely for years to come!

We learned that using Distilled water along with antifreeze helps prevent minerals from ordinary water from reaching with the magnesium side cover to prevent this problem in the first place. 👍

Thanks Joe for yet another fascinating & enthralling video,I could watch these for hours.I have learnt quite a bit as well.I own a 2005 Suzuki Burgman 650 which I have recently done a soft restoration on.I do all my own maintenance & save quite a bit of money doing so.However,if it came to doing any engine work,I would find it quite daunting as it sits underneath the bike,so all the plastics have to be completely removed to gain access.The belt drive is rumoured to be good for 100k,so touch wood it never goes on me!!keep up the good work,you are very much appreciated by us!!👍👍

Had a Hodaka Dirt Squirt , Honda MR175 and a TT 600 , wish I had one of these water cooled bikes along the way ! So fun to watch you bring this baby back to life ! Hope you put on a new chain and main sprocket along with the rear sprocket.

Really good video brother, hope you can take a little advice, not trying to bash you in any way... it's great to see guys (and gals) working on and fixing their own stuff... but with that said, please don't ever tighten triple clamp bolts after removing and replacing fork tubes until you get the front wheel back on and everything alinged and true, tighten the axle nut first, then the triple clamp bolts. it also helps if you mark the tubes at the clamps before removal... keep up the good work!

An old trick we used to do when your bike has run out of gas and you have just refilled it. Lean the bike over to side until a little gas runs out of the carb over flow hose, carb is now filled with gas and will be easier to start. Save you from kicking the first 15 times

Geoff Morris concepts in Australia makes recreation cases for these bikes out of aluminum they're all made out of magnesium until 1989 then they switched back to aluminum and 89 case May fit on your bike I think they fit an 86

Definitely change out those studs in the cylinder when doing Top End's on those ole classics. Not much more cost or time to freshen those up as well. Great historic piece, the 86. Great video.

Another great video just surprised at what length you didn't go to in the cosmetics of the bike, after new seat cover, gaitors and tank decals a couple of Pro-link decals on the swingarm would of made a small difference and to be fare some paint on the bare metal wouldn't of gone amiss considering all you did to the motor

With decals, affix to dry, clean surface and then spray water on top of the paper.before peling off. Works much easier.

With that type of plastic use a propane torch on the area you’re placing the sticker. A chemical process takes place between the plastic and burning propane. The sticker will stick a lot better. You just have to heat it long enough for it to be comfortably hot to the touch.

For an '86 this is incredibly clean. Vet vintage racers LOVE these mid-eighties Hondas and would've paid top dollar for the right one.

You shoulda hit them shrouds with a torch to take out a lot of those scratches before putting the stickers on. Also some new black number plate backgrounds to really make it look clean.

Dude the inside where the water pump seals go is cracked. How it’s it you didn’t see that. There’s a reason no 2 strokes on here have ever ran right. Dude is right. You’d think as many bikes as you’d worked on you’d understand how to tune them and actually assess problems. It’s still gonna leak
