$500 Ruger Mini 14 is it a Piece of Shit?

After Feedback from the original Mini 14 POS video and the $500 AR video I decided to take the Mini back to the range. I also took along an M1 Garand, an M1 Carbine, My AR and an 1894 Winchester to give show and tell.
I feel that the Mini follows in the great succession of handy carbines from the 1873, to the 1894, to the M1. There is something that makes a nice carbine a joy to take to the range.

Ruger is an amazing company. My dad bought a .44 mag carbine when he was 12 owned it his whole life and when he passed we knew the stock had a crack in it so we contacted Ruger to see if they would fix it and told them cost was not important and explain the situation. The cleaned replaced parts and sent it back in a case with a very nice letter...for free. And again years later my wife's step mom had a .22 revolver she had got from her dad that ended up being stolen by one of my wife's younger sisters boyfriend...we did finally get it back but it was kept outside so it was cover in rust the handle had been used to bash something and was broken and the serial numbers scratch off...she herself was in the end of her life from COPD and it crushed her...and again Ruger the greatest of all American gun company comes through with another free repair. But this time the reblued the steel replaced the original serial numbers and sent it back in a new case with extra replacement handles and barrel and cylinders. These stories are as true as can be and because of it I will never buy a new gun unless it's a Ruger.

For years, I was a "Remington" guy. I owned several other guns but Remington was my favorite. Then I met my wife, and her Dad liked Ruger and got me turned on to them. I bought my first, a Mini 14, in 1982 for $205.00, while it is a bit of a misnomer, since the Mini 14 is not truly a miniature M14 (I carried an M14 for a while in the Army), it is close and it's a lot cheaper to shoot with ,223 in place of 7.62mm. But I like my Mini 14, it's an easy to shoot, easy to maintain, exceptionally accurate carbine. I also expanded my collection with a Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem Mag, which is a bit punishing to shoot because of the caliber, but it really impressed me, as it was hitting bullseyes at 500 yards, straight out of the box, never even needed any adjustments to the Bushnell Banner 3x9 variable scope I bought for it. As an Army Veteran who carried an M16A1/A2 during most of my 22 year career, and the owner of a couple of AR-15s, I can certify that the Mini 14 is much easier to field strip and clean, than any AR or M16 variant. I've also been impressed with Ruger's hand guns. I own a nice pair of "Red Hawks", one in .44 Mag and one in .357 Mag. I also had a "Security Six" in .357 Mag. as well as one of my recreational shooters, a .44 Cap & Ball Ruger "Old Army" for that "Old West feel.

Not good for wide open spaces but forest or jungle I can see its appeal. Also the lighter ammo has a appeal. In a bad situation no 9ne says " I have to much ammo" Like in a mass shooting no one says " thank God I don't have a gun, someone might get hurt"

I have a Mini 14 from the 1980s serial number prefix of 189. It has the notorious pencil barrel. Groupings pretty much grow the more rounds you put through it. After about 5,000 rounds I've never had a jam, so that's the great thing about the action. I've since installed an Accustrut to try and tame the barrel harmonics. I haven't shot it yet, but I am looking forward to seeing if it works.

Did you read my comment? I totally hate any type of gun legislation because it only hurts people who actually obey laws. I'm just stating that the mini wasn't on the assault weapons ban under Clinton because it had a wooden stock. Which shows how ignorant they are.
@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 7 лет назад
Correct and not one of them will actually learn enough about the thing they want to ban to actually figure that out. Look at the FBI stats. In gun murders and crime all rifles (which includes so called assault weapons) make up only a tiny fraction compared to handguns. If they were smart they would ban handguns... But it's not like criminals can legally own them in the first place. Might as well ban murder... Oh wait that's already illegal.
@gunsbows6186
@gunsbows6186 7 лет назад
Yeah, an AR15 is in no way more dangerous than a Mini-14. Both can have 30round mags and have same rate of fire. Banning something because of "looks" is asinine. Anyway, I believe in the concept of people bans, not gun bans. I have no idea why we are so politically correct that we would let some "self righteous, self entitled, mentally ill alt-left nutcase who wants to stick his cock in Bernie" from owning a firearm - it is these people that usually go on shooting rampages.

Enjoyed your presentation. When I was stationed in Wyoming in the early 70s I used to see local cops with their Model 94s on the range. The would shoot, top off the gun, move, then shoot again...very tactical in an age before tacticool. I like Mini-14s, they work fine, some better than others...but all rifles are like that. My favorite Mini-14 was the series of Ranch Rifles with the fold down sights...I generally put a 2.5X scope on mine. I also liked the Mini-30s, but I never had one that was really accurate, although more than accurate enough for deer in the woods.

Having carried and qualified with the M-16, M-4, H&K G-36 and the M-1A I am confident that I can meet any threat that I trained for with my service weapons. As I now reside in an environment with wet weather on a regular basis, the stainless steel builds are convenient, in that I don't need to strip and clean as often, as I normally carry one of these weapons while I patrol my boundaries. Well sure, a .22 can kill a man too, but that doesn't take away the fact that people tend to be less alarmed by a "looks like granpops old rifle" mini 14 than by a "super tacticool pistol grip with lasers and rails" AR-15. We can pretend it's the same, because of function, but we know it isn't, because of looks. It's gun racism, if you think about it 🤔

@@ericdpeerik3928 I think the AR-15 has also gotten a bad rap because of all the weirdos in tactical gear parading around with them in public LARP-ing they're soldiers and trying to sound tough. The school shooters using ARs also made it scary for folks. And with so many images of M-4s from the GWOT that gave people the association that it's just for war and mass shootings. It's really too bad the image problem they have as they are great guns and anyone I've ever introduced to shooting them really liked them. I like the Mini-14 as well. It has a nice feel and I do like wood furnishings for nostalgic reasons I suppose & I think it has a nice balance to that's just comfortable. A friend of mine has an M-1 carbine and I just love it. I couldn't tell you how many rounds have been put through it but we hunted jack rabbits every 2nd or 3rd weekend during Utah's summer months for 5 years and burned through all the extra ammo at the end of the day and I still put 200-300 rounds through it a year so it has to be many 1000's of rounds. It still runs like a clock, doesn't jam or misfeed as long as I'm running my good mags and factory ammo and I can still hit a rabbit at 100 yards with the peep sights and that's about as far as I can see without a scope anyways. Yeah I don't think people understand, any mini-14 made after 2005 is a completely different rifle. A grade A reliable, super accurate and handy rifle great for home defense. The simple old and tested action and design makes it last too. It's been almost 20 YEARS so sad the old Mini's reputation has stuck on so many people because it is such a fantastic gun, genius idea and it's always better than those cheapo AR's around the same price range. Although any AR that's more expensive and if it's a solid one certainly out classes the Mini, for it's price, that's what really makes it stand out. Such a great rifle for what you pay for, especially if you're buying it used. My family and friends never bought them brand new, they used to be super easy to find second hand and worked like a charm as long as it was made after 2005.

A very nice video. Straight facts, action of the gun explained nicely, a bit of history about the set of events that led to the creation of this gun, your own experience with it, comparison with other popular guns, shooting, and of course: simple and easy-to-understand narration for someone like me whose native language isn't English and who has a bit of problem with understanding English through different accents. I need to make a video about dealing with them. Not that Rugers are prone to breaking but I own quite a few of them and most have been used and abused for 50-60 years before I bought them. Every time I have needed anything they have been awesome. Including one time I managed to wreck a brand new GP100 and admitted it was my fault and they fixed it for free.
@theshapeexists
@theshapeexists 7 лет назад
I have a 42 year old Super Blackhawk in 44 Mag that had rattled itself loose after countless rounds and when it needed a new base pin they sent it to me for free within two days of me asking for one to purchase. I then received an email from them saying that if it needed work even after they sent me the new base pin to send it in on their dime and they would get it back to me in Tip-Top shape. truly an awesome American company.
@theshapeexists

Thomas Pyles clearly you didn't watch the video. If there is a PROBLEM with the GUN that RUGER made, their CUSTOMER SERVICE will make it right. Do you need reiteration on my original comment, or are you incapable of basic comprehension?
@dunzerkug
@dunzerkug 6 лет назад
There are cases of people sending in worn out guns, such as GP100's form the early 90's with near 100k rounds, and offering a new gun at factory cost since the gun would have needed a new frame, new gun under federal law.
@dunzerkug
@dunzerkug 6 лет назад
A company that has been around for decades and will fix any issue for free is a big deal. Some, like Taurus, will make you pay shipping to them and it might take a couple trips before it is fixed which can mean over $100 in shipping and a the gun spending a combined time of a couple months getting fixed. Meanwhile if a Ruger breaks they rarely need to be sent back more than once for the same issue and come back like new.

A practical consideration between Mini & AR platforms and self defense. In a court of law, if there is a 'excessive force' from the victim component, the Mini appears much more benign to non-gun jurors than the 'evil black AR', despite fact both shoot same cartridge and have similar magazine capacities.
@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 7 лет назад
That is a consideration but it's unlikely that SD outside the home will be with a rifle rather than a handgun.
@ChucksSEADnDEAD

No matter how stupid the jurors may be, if that ever happened you'd just need to tell your lawyer to get a gun expert to testify and explain how stupid that argument would be. You'd win the case easy because if it went down to that it meant that the prosecution had no other arguments. What you need to worry is if the shooting was justified, because the prosecution will want to make it seem like you had no business taking the shot. If it's been established you were justified, they're grasping at straws.

Filipe Amaral An entire country was fooled into banning guns solely for cosmetic appearance. A Model 1907 Winchester in cal. .351, with optional 25 round magazine, ergonomically discharges projectiles in exactly same manner as the latest 'evil' black rifle with bayonet lug and flash suppressor, that is one bullet out the barrel with each single pull of trigger, but media and politicians fooled sheep, that looks could kill.

Dor Aran A country isn't a courtroom. Say what you want about the court system, but your voice is heard much louder than in congress. That's why the supreme court is such a big deal. If people are literally told to their face, heck, shown videotapes of the guns working so it gets through their thick skulls, and they still want to nail you, that's because they didn't like your face and wanted to nail you anyway. They'd nail you if you had a Mini-14. They just didn't like you because if the evidence is right there and they say guilty, that's prejudice.

Gun ownership can be like religion and politics, total tunnel vision that their opinion is the only correct one. I think the mini-14 joins the vintage combat rifle with a handy carbine size. I hope it's around for years to come. I like the AR platform too, there's room for both.

Thanks for posting! $500 isnt bad for a functional Mini. While I don't have a Mini now I once owned 5 of them, one stainless and another tricked out with a scope and flash suppressor.. They were nice little carbines, but they went down the river when I started to get interested in the AR15 and Springfield's M1A (still one of my all-time favorite rifles). While not a "perfect platform" the Mini fills a lot of gaps in the personal arsenal. At the time the AR15 was exorbitantly expensive and the Mini wasnt. These days the price of the Mini has risen a lot while the AR15s have dropped into the price niche once held by the Ruger Mini-14. There are a lot of after-market bits available and easily installed for the AR- and the AR is available almost universally, while the Mini-14 remains proprietary. The stainless option available for the Mini is worthwhile especially in wet climates. Some have said that the Mini is inaccurate, perhaps due to barrel harmonics and the way the action and barrel sit in the stock, and several cures or antidotes are available at a rather high price. I never found any of my Mini's inaccurate, and found that a 4X scope increased accuracy and range. "Accuracy issues" had nothing to do with why I replaced my Mini's with other civilianised 5.56X45 caliber rifles and carbines and have never looked back. Still the Mini filled a gap in my personal rifle selection and helped me learn the so-called "assault rifle" genre.

@bgndeath
@bgndeath 7 лет назад
Not true, they were both Carbines of similar size and purpose. The M-4 simply replaced the M1 Carbine as a newer better technology. WWII weapons consisted of M1 Carbines, M1 Garand, BAR,Tompson 45 ACP machine guns, Grease guns and the 30 cal machine gun. Oh and bolt action sniper rifles. Korea added the M-14, Vietnam added the M-16 with 203 option and M-60. Move ahead to Gulf war one and two and you have M-16, M-4, for special ops( now army wide), MP5's, Remington 308, SAW's and M-60G & D's phased out to the 240G and D. Yeah the M-2 Browning is still used today and they added the Barret 50 cals. Throw in a few experimentals to make it interesting. Military weapons evolve and other older still functional weapons get replaced by the good idea fairies and costs cutters. Just like the 1911's were replaced with the M-9, which will also be replaced by something else when they finaly figure out which one they like better.

A friend and I bought Mini-14's back in 1978. Mine was blued and his was stainless steel. One 4th of July, we fired off around 300 rounds of tracer apiece to entertain our mud brothers. When we recovered from our hangovers and went to clean them, we were both shocked to see his beautiful stainless steel had discolored from the heat. Fearing the worst we cleaned them up and fired a few rounds to see how they shot. Even though they both operated as well as usual we both sold them to other Marines for a big discount. I own an AR in M16 retro style and a M1A/M14. They are MY two favorite rifles. But I understand your point of view when comparing a Mini 14 to the AR carbine. The wood stock on the mini has much cleaner lines then the M4. The M4 buttstock has too many angles compared to the Mini, or a full size M14 stock. This is why my AR is an A1 the lines are much cleaner. A Mini is on my wish list. Keep 'em in the 10 ring.

I just bought a mini 14 waiting for it to arrive. I chose it over an AR because it’s a Ruger. They stand behind their product. Most AR’s are custom built so if the gun hiccups no one to send it to. Both platforms shoot the same rounds. Enjoy whatever works for you.

I owned a Mini 14 back in the 80's. Was out shooting one day when it failed to fully chamber a round and the bolt wasn't in battery. Without noticing the problem I pulled the trigger on the next round and the case exploded, gas and propellant shot back into my face. Thankfully I was wearing hearing protection and glasses. I had a number of small spots on my face that were bleeding. Up until that point I had put thousands of rounds downrange without issue. Still a good rifle and this type of problem could happen to anyone

I own two rugers; AR556 and NRA Edition Mini 14. I have plenty of experience with AR platforms being former army and I absolutely love the mini. The tactical versions are very worth the price and you'll find they much easier to keep clean and maintain than the AR. The modern minis do not have the accuracy issues that the older models have. Also a tip if you own one of these, spend the extra money on factory magazines. They are the most reliable and pretry easy to reload. I also have two Ruger in my arsenal - the GSR .308 bolt-action rifle and the Mini-14 in the .223. And I am going to buy a Ruger Precision Rifle in a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor. Excellent weapon and I am very pleased with the quality.

Many years ago, my cousin invited me to shoot steel targets on a north Texas ranch. He and his buddies had bolt-action .30.06 and .270 rifles. I only had only one long gun at the time. It was a Ruger MIni-14 manufactured in about 1980. They shot the steel targets, and every time they hit the target, they got a loud "clang." When they asked me to shoot my "mouse gun", it went bang, but the steel target did not move. We put our rifles on safe, and walked one hundred yards to look at the steel targets. Only the 55 grain .223 Rem from my rifle penetrated the targets -- a tiny .22 caliber hole in the steel. The fellow who hosted the shoot, yelled out loud "Who's going to fix those plates". He relented after I offered him a case of cold Lonestar Beer.

Still is in both a full auto and semi version. Nothing wrong with the mini 14 at all. The only complaint EVER was full auto versions that needed a better heat shield if numerous mags were repeatedly shot in short periods of time. heat buildup would cause warping. I decent heat shield and bull barrel correct these issues in the FA models. Semi-auto versions no probs.

politicalsheepdog Yep your right dog I carried one as a police officer but all the agency's I know of dumped them for AR 15's because the mini was not very accurate and not very reliable.

I had one that used to be the property of the Maryland State Penitentiary. Stock was dinged up but the barrel was like new. They hardly ever shot those things.

It would be nice if Ruger made a Mini 14 model that would accept AR magazines.

It would take some doing but it would be possible. I do have a few of the old Ramline AR/Mini combo mags from the 1980s. The big issues is the mini magwell is narrow in the front so they would need to use the well from a Mini 30 or 300 blackout model and make a different mag release system.

Seriously, that's what's stopping me from buying one. I'm canadian where ARs are "restricted" i.e. too much bs around owning them while the mini 14 is "non-restricted" i.e. like owning a muzzle loader or bolt action. Laws make zero f-ing sense here.

I have one pretty much exactly like yours. I bought mine right around 1996 in a gun shop and I don't know why I remember but the price tag at that time was $509. So you bought yours about right. I think the last one I ever saw in a gun shop was around $900. Been quite awhile sense I've even seen one for sale in a gun shop, maybe they have stopped making it. That would be a shame because they are a light handy little carbine and I've been told I'm lucky, but mine is very accurate.

I really like my mini 14. When I first got my mini 14 it would group at a hundred yards a 3 Moa. I bought a barrel strut from ruger. It's an integrated Barrel strut . In other words is all one piece it don't have the set screws. That way you don't have to worry about it slipping. So now I'm grouping 1 moa at 100 yards . I still have some more work to do to it. But it's an awesome rifle. And I would stack it up against any high dollar AR . The action the receiver has been around since the 30s. Such as the M1 Garand the M1 carbine the M14 and M1A, M 21. Socom 16 which are still in service . it's battle-proven battle-tested like I said it is still being utilized today.

You don't buy a Mini-14 for target matches. But it will do what you do buy it for -- practice, plinking, SHTF, back-of-the-truck, etc.

The M1 carbine was meant for non-frontline troops like truck drivers, support etc. Just meant to give these rear troop something better than their .45 but easier to lug around than a full size battle rifle.

What are the Firearms laws in Chile like?
@ChileExpatFamily
@ChileExpatFamily 7 лет назад
Similar to the former USA, just more time consuming. You see the Chileans learned in the 1973 Coup that a people unarmed is a people of slaves. Only this one was with a little twist!!! In 1970 Salvador Allende a socialist/communist of the Cuban castro persuasion, was elected by 1/3 of the people to the presidency of Chile. This idiot ordered the confiscation of all privately held weapons on entering office. The people were compliant for the most part. The Allende government was typical full bore communist stupidity, with land "reallocation" and confiscation from land owners so as to make all people equally miserable. It was an injustice as they took land from German immigrants, and others, who came to Chile in the 1860s with the clothes on their backs and forced them to give up their land they had hacked out of the wilderness. They forced private citizens to house soldiers in their homes and give them room and board. They controlled the food distribution, etc..... (like Venezuela now, or like the vision Obama and Michell have for the former USA). In 1973 there was a military coup because Allende way, way overstepped his bounds as president and was ignoring the constitution he wrote. Remember back in 1970 the Allende government (Commies) confiscated all privately held weapons? Hence the conservative military took over with out a whimper. Unfortunately the conservative government overstepped its power over time and "Got Even" with the commies in various heinous ways, until the then conservative dictator Pinochet, stepped down. On the good side the policies and prosperity that the conservative government brought continue today and have made the Chilean economy the strongest and the government the most stable in South America. Now: you must pass a medical exam (think mental stability here), you must pass a police record search (we don't want any criminals having guns), you must pass a proficiency test with your weapon (so you do not shoot yourself in the foot). There are many bad things about these rules and also many good things. I moved there knowing these things and accept them whole heatedly. Unlike the former USA where they make the rules up as they go now (patriot act) with the DHS, CIA, NSA, FDA (think milk terrorists) , EPA, NEA, FBI, FDIC, ISIS, and the Republican and Democrat parties. In essence it is Freer here in Chile! Ciao Jim
