I've always shied away from wanting to travel to countries like India or Indonesia because of bad stereotypes like being robbed and scammed there all the time and such. And while some of those may be true to a certain extent, I've learned, that you just gotta be aware of what your buying, and have a certain idea of the normal price of what you're buying, like shown in your videos. But thanks to you, I've discovered that the street shops and the nature in India or Indonesia is what I've always been craving for. Seeing the honest working street shops making honest money with their handicraft or self-harvested fresh fruits just warms my heart and makes me really want to go there. These fascinating Buddha temples and extraordinary views are exactly what I've been dreaming of seeing, and you surely helped me confirm that. I wanna travel to Asia! By the way, you should try to go back to Makassar using a ride like a car or a bus, it might take 6-9 hours of drive, but trust me, you'll never be disappointed because of the views that you'll see along your way!

Im a native torajan, and people always said that toraja is beautiful. Last time i went to toraja was in december 2022 when i was going for christmas, My grandma live quite near to the homestay you were staying, while my other grandma lives in Mount sesean. Also the place you were staying is not rantepao, But it is Alang-alang

Dale, as an Indonesian, I also often experience awkward moments between 10 and 12 o'clock, I greet someone selamat pagi/good morning, sometimes they are answered selamat siang/good afternoon, or vice versa, I greet selamat siang/good afternoon and the answer is selamat pagi, ini kan masih pagi (good morning, it's still morning). awkward moments , no big problem at all.
I think the right time for you to visit Toraja is August, because you can witness firsthand the ma'nene' tradition (wrapping and cleaning a corpse). But I'm glad to hear that you are already in Toraja. I always follow your content and finally you come to our village 🤩🤩. Enjoy your trip 😇

Dale you must remember that Indonesia was occupied by the Dutch for a long period of time so most of the loanwords are Dutch in origin, so we dont say petrol but we say bensin, from the Dutch word benzine. There are loanwords from Portuguese and English but Dutch loanwords is more common.
Yea it's from dutch, the word petrol is not very familiar to them.. And also asking for gas is incorrect, they will show you cooking gas where people cook on..

Great video, Dale. Regarding greetings of pagi (morning) or siang (daylight or afternoon), you are right, that like common in the west (Europe, America) siang means after 12 pm (noon). So siang is afternoon (after noon, or after 12 pm). The confusion is that in Indonesia the concept of "afternoon" or "after noon" is actually non existent. Siang can simply mean "daylight" or when the sun is already high above your head. Remember that Indonesia is on the equator, everyday the sun is moving from east to west above the Indonesians' heads :-). In fact, around 12 pm the sun is precisely above your head. Not like in Europe or in Australia, the sun above your head can be around 3 pm in the summer time. However, in rural and farming areas, people wake up much earlier than those in cities. 7 am is still pagi (morning). But when it's already 10 am, people are already everywhere working, already busy in their farmlands or on the roads, the sun is already high above their heads and it's usually already hot, then they consider the time already "siang" or "very late morning" or "high daylight'. Thus they use "selamat siang" after 10 am or after 11 am. Petrol is called "bensin" in Indonesia. It comes from the Dutch word of "benzine" (Indonesia was a colony of the Netherlands) or German word of "benzin". Like in many other countries in Indonesia there are many types of "bensin" (petrol) too depending on their octane levels. Motorbikes usually use pertalite petrol/bensin. The Toraja people in South Sulawesi have somehow some connection with the Batak people in North Sumatra. (Btw, I already watched all your trips to North Sumatra last time). The Torajan and Batak people have many similarities in culture and way of life including the tribal houses you saw ("tongkonan" in Toraja and "rumah bolon" in Batak). One theory says (Prof Simanjuntak from the University of Medan) that the Toraja and Batak people originally came from the same ancestry originally from the Mongolia-Tartar's area (long before the time of Genghis Khan). The people migration took place since many thousand years ago (perhaps 7000 years ago) and also took thousand years in the process, migrating to Myanmar (Karen people), Thailand (Chiang Mai), then Formosa/Taiwan. From Taiwan they migrated to many places, like the South Philippines and ended up in South Sulawesi in Indonesia and they become Toraja people. Later this migration continued to the Eastern side of Sumatra (through the Malacca Strait) and they moved inland into the Sumatra island and finished the migration at the Lake Toba (Danau Toba) in North Sumatra (an inland and mountainous higher area with better protection) and created the Batak people there. The kid at the Torajan graveyard kept saying to you "pemandu seikhlasnya" (feel free towards the tour guide) and he meant to use Google translation after your cave visit to translate that "pemandu seikhlasnya" :-). The 30K is only your "entrance fee" because the boy offered 3 flash lamps (don't know whether the kids later take that money to buy cigarettes. I think after the boy's parents watch your video this boy, who smokes, will be in trouble at home :-) ). The boy, as your tour guide (pemandu), wants to be paid for his guide service that you feel free (seikhlasnya) to give him a fee if you are happy with his guide service.
