Thank you for this video, I have been looking from someone to explain the exact method to facing a hammer and then show with a tool most people have or can easily obtain. Most other video's they rush through the process and then run to their over $1,000 2x72 grinder and have the camera so far away you can't really see what they're doing. Starting out I don't have all the bells and whistles and have been looking for ways to modify the tools I have so save some money, this video has helped as a visual reference.
I just did this on my 8 i.b.s. sledge for my tredle hammer frame. I prefer to mirror finish my hammer heads i know it's overkill but i like the finish.
thank you for your video! this is my project for today without replacing the handles right away. i was interested in the handles, but they seem to have a pretty fair amount of runout on the grain. at least in the video they did. are you happy with the handles?
Thanks for your comment John. As the handles go, they have held up so far with the hammers... The axe handles on the other hand is another story. Had two axe handles break on me and I stop using them. Went back to hickory with the axes.
Thanks for the video. Currently going down the list of your videos and maybe you have done it already and i haven't seen it but do you think a ball peen hammer would work good as a handled hot cut chisel? Thanks again for the videos i am really enjoying them.
Hi Jake, Thanks for watching my videos. Yes you can re-forge the ball of the ball peen into a hot cut chisel with very little effort. I have an old ball peen from my grandfather the was re-forged as a hot cut. I would recommend only heat treating the hot cut end and leaving the striking end soft.
