You mentioned that you were working without a shirt, I’m allergic to sunlight, I don’t even own a short sleeve shirt. Long sleeves for 60 years, it’s a little cooler than bare skin, seems to me. Thank you Sir for the video.
Love the videos, man! I live in lower Alabama, work outside and totally understand what being soaking wet in sweat is like! I still don’t mind standing in front of my forge though. Keep up the good work and the no nonsense approach to helping us novices!!
Just wanted to say how awesome this video was. There are loads of videos of people forging rounding hammers that skip over huge parts or have the full forging but don't explain what they're doing and why they're doing it. They also don't say why they're not doing certain things as well. This was fantastic
Aswell i was commenting when bam! She gone, anyway. Well done. Definitely getting better and streamlining the process with every hammer. Big difference from your first rounding Hammer video. It will be very helpful 4 us who r looking forward to our first attempt at Hammer making. As are your other Hammer videos. Lets what it again
Honor flight is an outstanding charity that helps former warriors visit nation monuments and battle fields around the world...... plus might I suggest a guthook skinning knife..... great work as usual....
Wow, thanks for the etsy link. Now I know I have been undercharging for my work lol. I usually charge $5 for my leaf pendants and feather wall hooks. Only charged $20 for a RR spike knife. I haven't tried axes or hammers yet, but when I move up to those its nice to know I can get way more than I would have thought. Thanks again 👍
Nice build, nice to see this done without a power hammer or striker(I haven't either) keep well and keep the good work going all the bet from North Yorkshire, UK
Nice job with the hammer! Charity suggestions? Project Linus. They supply security blankets for children exposed to trauma. My foster children get them and that's where I discovered this great handmade comfort for kids in need of their own comfort. If only momentarily. I know it's not your forte, but distribution costs for the homemade blankets help immensely.
I see you got your Ribbon Burner running I have had mine for a year now and I needed to replace it . I have two burners ready just waiting for them to dry before I cure them. These are great on the fuel usage. Great Hammer by the way...
Don't know what happened to the first video, but here's what I tried to comment after watching it earlier. "Nicely done John! I really enjoy the simplicity of your hammers! Just elegant and refined. I agree with you on how the completely charred handle looks really good against the brushed head. Keep up the good work and stay safe and well hydrated out there brother! God bless!"
Awesome vid! You sound better and better every vid! I guess that ... not the skills at forging... but as an instructor and narrator (or ”youtuber”) you improve very fast! Keep it up, its awesome to see and listen to you!
Did he say he's using an 8lb hand hammer to forge other hammers? My arm can barely get through forging things with a 3.5lb hammer after 1-3 hrs. Guess I need to start practicing with my 10lb dumbells and work them forging muscles. Beautiful work through friend. It was a pleasure to watch you forge.
Thats cool John, nice hammer! Love the built in power hammer you have, been swinging hammers almost all my life and an 8 pounder is something I very, very rarely swing as a hand hammer! As for the shirt, Im in Queensland Australia and in the heat of summer forging in shorts and thongs is common for me, yep, hot scale is HOT, but burns heal and heatstroke can kill!
I’ve started doing the handle thing where you use a chisel and force the wedge in and I must say it is far better in my opinion. Much tighter and ive had less issues when i do that
ScrubMonk3y ! Yup. Still my go to method. Seems to hold up better in my experience. Just can’t use too thick of a wedge or it can split far into the wood past the end of the eye. But generally it seems to work much better for me. Plus it saves time of cutting a slice
You have a video on choosing blacksmithing hammers (&work face dimentions)? I'm just getting started. Bought a 1500g cross peen with square face. The other hammers I was looking at (1000g) I'd have to grind and clean so much that id be loosing weight and had a very narrow face. Also points on wood handles vs fiberglass, also the finishing on the eyes of the hammers (some have a smooth plastic or glue)
Great hammer, and I don't think the sparks and slag hurt that much, i've even come to enjoy the slight tingle they make. It's not really dangerous in my opinion. Hot anthracite nuts falling on your bare feet though now that hurts and is probably not advisable, I have a few scars on my feet.
Londinium Armoury that’s why I always wear long pants doing hammers. The big pieces of scale will fall into the rim of your boot and cause pretty bad burns
