Dan, I just got to this video and it helps a lot! YOU are a MASTER at what you do! I'm mildly disabled enough to where I can't MAKE a hammer but, I think if I make a Guillotine tool and use the fullers on an already made much less expensive hammer that I can come up with something usable! I can't reliably use anything much larger than a 2-pound hammer, anymore so, it will be work, either way! Anything that would take a normal person a couple of hours will take me a couple of DAYS and MANY heats! I guess as long as I'm in the forge and DOING something that's better than NOT doing anything at all! And, when I'm done, as long as I get a good heat treat and temper on whatever I come up with, I guess it was worth it, even if it's just for the experience! Thanks for your expertise and your videos! They are a Godsend!

I've been wanting to try to do this with a few cheep hammers that are just sitting ready to go in the forge and haven't had the guts to try yet. I think I'll just follow your example and lob them in there 😁 Maybe I'll end up with some hammers I can use and add to my blacksmithing kit, who knows LOL 👍

I'd go with the 'Rough & Ready' suggestions Dan. Maybe a 'Rough and Ready Forged' series perhaps? I liked the set downs on the reins of the new tongs, farriers have done them that way for donkeys years and I've never understood why more Smith's don't really. Having the reins parallel (one on top of the other) along their full length is much more comfortable in the hand to me than having them off set. I made a pair like the one you did with Tim a month or so before all this cr*p kicked off and he loves them.

I am really glad you did that, I was wondering if I could save myself some time and start with a hammer shaped object. As a newbie, I don't know a good decision from bad. My instinct says, just go locate a hunk of 4140. But I am new, and working alone in an unequipped shop... Not even a drift yet.

I'm way behind on these videos from when they were made, this hammer reforging is great, I definitely will be trying these as my first forging projects, just so I can get some descent tools without breaking the bank. I'm 64 years old, I like doing things myself. I've taught myself, with the help of RU-vid videos like these how to do many things, like learning how to MIG weld, how to Stick weld, I will be making a forge, not sure exactly which model I'm going to use yet, I'm looking to make a fairly large forge, which means I'l have to locate it outside and maybe put a roof over it, then putting up walls as needed, but the floor is going to be dirt. Just as a little background on me, I'm a veteran 4 years in USMC, 8 years USN and year and a half in US Army. In the Corps I was was an aviation supply-man, but was checked out as CH53-D door gunner, had several flights in and out of Vietnam between 1974 and 1975, saw some action along the DMZ in Korea in 1975, was on two ships in the Navy, the USS Mississippi CGN-40 and the USS Carl Vinson CVN-70 was a Operations Specialist and in the Army was a Combat Engineer and spent a year in Iraq 2005 and 2006 at age 50. So I've been around the world a few times and have seen and done a lot of things and I guess that's why I like learning to do stuff that many would pay others to do for them. So I really appreciate videos like this to allow me to learn and do new things, this wasn't available when I was starting out, so thank you for taking the time to teach this old war dog new tricks! 😎🐕‍🦺⚒

Thanks for the 'Rough Cut & Uncut' video. I have made a rounding hammer from a silver line 2lb lump no cheeks but it does the gob for £6 plus a handle. Your right about the steel quality as I have put some deep gouges in the rounding edge with the corner of my small anvil, but saves the anvil I suppose. Is there an advantage to having the fullers?. Stay safe and all the best from N Yorks.

You've demonstrated that you can, but I wonder if you feel that you *should* - certainly this was great for curiosity (and I am all for scratching that itch) but are there any specific advantages to reforging like this? such as saved time, or cost?

Hey shrimp its most likely not the same for this guy but In a case like mine as an australian, its really hard to find a SINGLE below 100 dollar smithing hammer like this one. I can search far and wide only to find nothing of the sort as blacksmithing simply isnt that popular here. Which brings me to why i want to convert my grandfathers old club hammer into something better suited for the craft
