That is not a normal rent increase, clearly the landlord wants these tenants out and using the rent increase to push them out. Only hearing one side of the story. I can't see them getting 10K/month for a condo. Once they move, the place will rent for 3500 or 4K

My building is increasing rents between $500 - $1000 PER MONTH. We will all be out on the street soon.

This is ford's version of making life affordable for Ontarians: ZERO oversight or limits to annual rent increases.

This is clearly a law that has to be overturned and the rent control must be on ALL buildings. What possible justification could the landlord give for a $7,000 a month increase? Wrong on so many levels!

The landlord obviously wants them to leave. He owns the property and can what he wants with it.

Bringing back rent controls will cause a huge influx of condos listed that the landlords can no longer afford to pay the mortgage on. There are already lots of older condos on the market with tenants in place that the new buyer must assume. Such a huge mess our city is in. For $9500 per month, these sisters could buy their own unit. That’s an insane rent.

As a landlord, I don't see an issue. My tenant is paying $15,000 a month because I am a lord. Muhahahaha

And if you pay some rent just before you’re evicted, the process goes back to square one and everything starts all over again, another few years of free rent. This is how our system works (or doesn’t work). This is the beauty of the Ford government, making life much more difficult for the folks of Ontario.

.. and this is what happens when the government is in the back pocket of developers. There is no logical justification to be able to legally raise rent that much. It's unchecked greed, and the government opened the door wide to these building owners to gouge their tenants.

What we don't know in this piece, was the apartment in question a condo rented out by an investor who is now deep underwater with their variable rate mortgage? Or is it owned by a REIT? And just how big is this suite anyway that could justify $9K per month rent? My guess, a stressed out mom and pop landlord who owns a couple of condo units is freaking out on their mortgage payments because they chose variable rate and decided to scare the sisters out with a $7K rent increase after they tried to renegotiate their lease. Unless that unit is 3,000 sq ft. it won't be going for $9K per month on the market. The rental market is insane, but not that insane.

Many landlords need to sell because of interest rates. Ridiculous rents will help get tenants out so they can sell and pull out of the rental market

Australia imported too many foreign workers last 3 years. Non-skilled migrants. They are everywhere aound 370 000 according to news TV 9. They imported them for Corona Virus shortages of workers. They are staying here now doing nothing. The problem is that they have money. I don't know how, but they bid and increase rents everywhere. Problem can be solved but obviously this artificial increase of rents is welcome by the government. The Government has issued visas to NON skilled migrants and they don't send them back after Corona virus. So , pronlem is created and high bills for australian renters are not over. We will see, how this punishment to Australians will end!

The absence of rent controls is driving inflation and house prices further. The government needs to intervene. But Poilievre won’t say a word because he supports investors, REITs and landlords. He will make the housing crisis worse.

everyone talking about rent control, when that has nothing to do with it, its basic economics of demand and supply. with what we thought was 1.7, now 2.7 million immigrants comming this year, the demand for housing far outstrips housing. we will not be able to build our way out of the housing crisis for at least a decade if not two and that's only if immigration reduces to about 100k, even that is a lot.

Welcome to Calgary we are all homeless except Ontario, BC and immigrants in our province.

I think the landlord is trying to tell them to leave. I don't think he's serious about retaining them as tenants. This looks more like a 'I'll let you stay ONLY if you are dumb enough to be extorted'....Are these girls illegal wealthy? The landlord might have thought they'd be desperate enough to pay it in order to stay in Canada. Remember these girls look Indian and there is an India on Indian turf war going on here on Canadian shores (sikhs vs indians). It could also simply be political. There are also a lot of ethnic foreign owners looking to sell their units to leave Canada. Its a lot harder to sell a unit when you've got it tenanted. Lets face it I don't think ANY LANDLORD expects a tenant to be able to pay this. They want them out of their unit.

The best solution that protects tenants and investors is to follow the inflationary guidelines for existing tenants but allow free market rent when the tenant leaves. You have to protect existing tenants while still incentivizing the building of new rental housing. Going too far in either direction is a recipe for disaster.

Why would this guy want them out? they seem like normal young ladies. If they're not causing problems why not raise the rent to a reasonable level and let them stay. I'm a landlord and even I think they should have rent control on all rentals properties.

I moved a guy who moved out his dead beat tenant. Tenant was moving into a double sized condo, and landlord told me, how could he afforded new place, he did not pay him rent for 6 months yet he was surprised how tenant afforded new much larger condo. Landlord was paying all expenses for moving, security, elevator, even special payment for not damaging his glass table. Landlord was dumb. Tenant kept saying, Do not worry, my money will come from Jamaica soon, I will pay you later.... I laughed on landlord. He was already looking for another tenant.

How exactly did the tenants want to "change their lease"? Could this be the real reason why the landlord raised their rent so much? What is the other side to this story? Why does this news report only tell one side of the story? Why isn't there at least one argument against rent control in this news story? There are valid arguments both for and against rent control. I want to hear both sides.

Why Nov. 2018 buildings exempted?? Vancouver doesn't have this threshold, rent controls across all buildings...

Who’s going to take the risk and invest in rental properties if they can’t charge fair market value? You need to live where you can afford. It might not be the penthouse or the posh neighborhoods.

Can landlords be penalized for doing such an unethical action? The rent needs to be controlled and its just ridiculous. Best is to rent a place that is 2017 and older.

The rules need to be rewritten. It should be fair for both parties. Fair for landlord to charge based on fair price and tenant to make sure they pay and not damage the property.

If the government is going to limit the amount of land where housing can be built in order to protect the environment, it's going to cause an artificial shortage of housing, which will lead to prices being much higher.

What is the problem? They knew there is no rent control in this building, so they should have planned that they may have to move if increase in unreasonable. This are the rules of the game, you can't demand to change it the moment it becomes inconvenient for you. The reason there is no rent control on 2018+ buildings is because nobody wanted to build and government was trying to incentivize new building by promising not to implement rent control. That is why those building were actually built and this is why owner most likely paid higher price for that apartment. Bringing back rent control now would be a fraud.

Plenty of “rest and leisure” in such a magnificent rental building. That said, rent control seriously gets behind the proverbial beasts in a culture-rich society and a Canadian-driven economy. Get that ball rolling!

These sisters should simply stop paying rent altogether, and save their money for a down payment, or for another rental elsewhere. It will take years before their landlord can have them evicted, since the Landlord and Tenant Tribunal has completely collapsed.
