$99 Hatfield Shotgun 50 Cent Action Job

When I saw the budget Hatfield Shotguns at Walmart for $99 I was intrigued. I looked around online and most people said they were decent for the price but kicked like mules and had very heavy triggers. Supposedly they are made by Khan in Turkey who also made my Mossberg Maverick which I am very please with for the price.
I decided to buy one and see how bad they could possibly be. The bad news was the stock was loose in the box and the trigger was very stiff. I did some tinkering and tightened the stock and figured out a way to lighten the trigger pull with nothing more than standard tools and a dab of locktite.
If you'd like to try this on your gun you will need.
1/2" Socket on a 6" Extension
#2 Phillips Screwdriver
Blue Locktite
Some Moly-Lube Grease (Or regular gun grease)
By lightening the hammer spring you lighten the hammer but you may need to fine tune your adjustment to ensure reliable ignition due to the rebounding hammer safety on this gun. Once you have your trigger set how you want it locktite it in place and it should be good to go.

Your suggestion of using loctite was very helpful. I am a trapshooter and my brother gave me this same gun and I did some modifications to it. To reduce the recoil, I filled the stock hole with lead shot and placed a piece of duct tape over the hole. To make the gun shoot higher, I made an adjustable stock. I also put a middle bead on the gun. I then used this same gun in a non registered trapshooting event and ran a 98 out of 100 with the gun. I beat shooters using guns that cost $5,000.00 and they hated the fact that I beat them with a $100.00 gun. Thank you for posting this informative video.

Why do people feel the need to hate on a $99 dollar firearm?.. It's a $99 dollar firearm so what do you expect seriously? LOL The fact it doesn't blow up in your face every shot makes it a good purchase in my opinion lol.

Yes Sir!! I agree, I have an RIA single shot shotgun 12 gauge. It has polymer stock 20 inch barrel adjustable rear sight. Included three chokes and you can adjust the overall length. Made in Turkey excellent quality shotgun. One and a haAlf years ago I paid $77 Buds online gun store. The same shotgun now sells for around $130-$150 Some people are ignorant and think that if a firearm is made simple and useful it is cheap and no good? Just like saying a pump shotgun is no good because they have semi- auto shotguns?

@@kevinrollman3101 Exactly lol. My father bought a HR single shot from Kmart years ago and it was the first shotgun I got a turkey with and he said that he paid just $45 but that was 30yrs ago. We still use it and it's actually better or rather more accurate than my Mossberg. Cheap don't always mean junk.. Anyways I hope that you are doing well right now and that you have a great week. 🙏🙏🍻

The new one I bought was so stiff, even after taking it apart, loosening that screw, or trying to break it open, or close it, I had to send it to a gunsmith, who at first, laughed at me about buying such junk. I told him it was just a factor of single shot, and not worrying about it getting scratched and what not. When I finally got it back....he told me the machining of this gun was so terrible, with all the burrs hanging up the action, along with a poorly machined surface, it was no wonder I was having problems with it. Long story short, he fixed it up nicely. NOW, to get accessories for it, which are practlcally non existant. Thanks Hatfield.

I got the .410 Hatfield a few months ago, and dig quite a few mods. It now has a 16 inch barrel with a 3 inch flash guard, so it's still legal. I drilled 7 holes in the top of the stock to store ammo in, and recently added a laser sight on the underside of the fore-end grip, so that it doesn't interfere with the original bead sight. This thing puts 5 36 caliber lead balls down range at 1,150 fps and patterns inside an 8 inch circle at 10 yards. It is my wife's number one home security gun. you don't dare open my door without being invited.

Looked in all the comment section, and no answer to my question...so, to loosen the tension on the trigger pull do you turn the screw like you are extracting it? Or tightening it? Since at least one person said you need to have at least 3 threads engaged to prevent it from stripping out, I assume that means you are loosening the screw...correct? And what about the comments on the trigger guard screw being too long? Do you agree with that? One fellow suggested cutting 3 threads off that screw to prevent it from touching the underside of the spring. Would that not be an easier adjustment of the trigger tension if that actually occurs? Any help is appreciated.

Well done - I am a mechanic, not a gunsmith, but I see a sound, common-sense approach here. However, commonconservative has a point. I would still stick with the "blue' threadlocker - unless the screw is an interference fit (i.e. really tight to turn, disregarding spring tension) it will tend to back out over time. Which is probably why they set it stiff. But a longer screw is a good idea. I would take the screw out and run down to the local hardware store and match it with a longer screw. (O.K., Big Box like Lowe's if you have to but I believe in patronizing local small business.) Then put in the longer screw, adjust it and mark it, then cut it off so it will engage all the threads at the tension you want. A jamb nut would be preferable if it fits underneath the spring, but otherwise blue threadlocker.

Thanks for the informative video. I have had my Hatfield for 5 years and it is been fantastic with no issues. I was only able to go one turn in order for all of the ammo to go bang every time. I tried going to terms but the cheap ammo had a couple light primer strikes. I think everybody's maybe just a little different because I have seen some people saying they went three terms with no issues. I purchased mine for $125 because it is the stainless model butt why anybody would not want to own one of these for the price is beyond me they're fantastic

Hey I just bought one of these and when I cleaned it up I saw that when I pulled the trigger the hammer doesn't go all the way forward and make the little pin petrude through the little firing pin hole.. haven't shot or adjusted anything.. just wonder if that's normal or not?
@jeredhersh789
@jeredhersh789 5 лет назад
It's normal. Just like most modern revolvers, there is a hammer disconnect that prevents the firing pin from touching the primer if the hammer is down. It's there to make the gun safe to carry with a round in the chamber

In reviewing your video, I can now see what is happening. The screw that holds the trigger guard goes clear through the block and bottoms against the bottom of the leaf spring causing tension on the leaf spring. So, I'm taking mine apart again, readjusting the screw for the leaf spring and then making sure the trigger guard screw is not pushing against the underside of the leaf spring? I bet there are a lot of these guns with this problem. Right at the moment, mine is really nice...maybe too nice...we'll see.

I just accidentally discovered something. I also have (had) the problem of a hard trigger pull and did as you've shown and while it helped some, the trigger pull was still pretty bad. I've another problem with the shotgun in that it hard to break open and often times I pinch my middle finger...enough to draw blood. This pinch was created by the back of the trigger guard being pushed up against the screw that holds it. So, while messing around, I took the screw completely out. WOW...I immediately noticed how easy it opened...then I pulled the hammer back....easy...then I pulled the trigger...very nice. Of course this can't be right...so I put the screw back in finger tight plus 1 turn., then it had the same symptoms as before. Then I reversed the screw 3/4 turn...now it's like silk. I don't know why this is...I can understand why it would open easier...but what has that screw have to do with trigger pull. I mean, it's great. Am I overlooking something? I had already adjusted the screw holding the leaf spring as far out as I dared, then lactated it. I'm thinking I'll lock time the trigger guard screw, then take it out for a test firing. It may be too loose now.

@GunAndShotTV
@GunAndShotTV 7 лет назад
Even a double barrel fires softer than a single barrel because the extra barrel adds more weight to dampen the recoil. Unless you are shooting a box of ammo in a short period it's not that bad. If recoil is a huge problem most cases are solved by a padded trap vest or a limb saver.

I got my self two of these nice little shotguns. Part of the problem with the kick on them is the back bore. Open it up and look down the load side. The back bore has a real bad transition. It should be smooth. One of mine is better than the other but they are both bad. I found out this when I tried to put my 410/45 long colt adapter in one and it would not fit. This is why slugs kick real bad. The guns should be taken to a smith and have the back bore fixed. MAGA !

I have the 20 gauge model and I need to take it apart and figure out what's going on with it. It's not firing rounds. The primers have primer strikes on them but the round is not going off.
@thoughtcriminal7653
@thoughtcriminal7653 2 года назад
The firing pin isn't hitting the primer hard enough. You could try taking the stock off and tightening up the screw on the spring so that the spring has more tension on it and hits the primer harder. Either that or you have bad ammo. You could try getting shells that have more sensitive primers. Federals have one of the most sensitive primers I think.
@WinModel88
@WinModel88 2 года назад
@@thoughtcriminal7653 that's what I thought too but I've had the gun apart several times and adjusted the screw many times both ways with every brand of ammo under the sun and not one of them went off even though every one of them was struck by the firing pin. It just won't adjust enough to set off the round. I'm stumped.
@thoughtcriminal7653
@thoughtcriminal7653 2 года назад
@@WinModel88 Your firing pin might be too short. It could also be that the shells are loose inside the chamber, and the shells bounce around a bit inside the chamber when struck instead of getting a solid, direct hit. Other than that, I have no idea. Are the primer strikes off-center at all?
@WinModel88
@WinModel88 2 года назад
@@thoughtcriminal7653 the primer strikes on every shell that I've tried to fire through it are almost all dead center. Very frustrating and puzzling. I can usually do alot of the gunsmithing on my own guns but this one has me puzzled lol
@thoughtcriminal7653
@thoughtcriminal7653 2 года назад
@@WinModel88 Do the primer strikes look any different compared to the primer strikes on shells that fired successfully? If the primer marks are smaller or shallower compared to ones that fired, the firing pin probably isn't hitting hard enough. Your best bet for getting it to fire might be to either replace the firing pin or replace the hammer spring.

I just picked mine up today I plan to shorten the barrel, relocate the front sight, gouge in the forestock for more complete folding, and fix the trigger. FIRST, though, I've got to get the "safety" working. It doesn't matter which direction I push the pin, i can cock , fire, and open the beach . I've got half a mind to replace that pin with a 1/4-20 screw and a wingnut. (Blue Loc-Tite, of course.) Any one have a better solution? No way is it going back for warranty work.

So if you mess with the trigger there is even a slight chance the gun won't shoot? No thanks, I'll deal with a hard trigger pull. After all it's a $99 truck/atv/back pack gun. what did you expect?

I have had my 12 gauge for a few years now. The trigger pull was ugly when I got it. I kept saying, I need to do something about that. It actually got better with age. I spent more money having the barrel cut to 20 inches and having it threaded for choke tubes than I paid for the gun. I bought a barrel adapter that lets me shoot .38 or .357 rounds out of it. It pretty much goes where I go.

a pistol grip shotgun wouldn't make a very good survival shotgun though, barrel is shorter so it will spread more and no stock.

I didn't "lactate it" (funny)...I used LOCK TITE on it. That screw I loosened is pretty loose now...not very firm at all. Just hoping Lock time will hold it.

On a screw that small, you don't need "a couple of dabs of loctite". I don't even use that much on large, 1/2" diameter automotive fasteners. Much less on a tiny screw like that. If you know how loctite works, you'd understand that you don't need excess loctite. More≠better in this case.

why not put a nut and bolt in place of spring screw a better fix i think,gets me how they make and sell a shotgun for under 100 bucks must cost 25 bucks to make by the cost to the sellers and then walmart ticket price

Kevin Keener probably around $ 60 bucks in a private setting and around $45 dollars at a pawn store which they tend to only offer around 35 to 40 percent of the value of an iteam. the only exception is gold and or diamonds.

Kevin Keener $99 or less lmao. A pawn shop may give you $15 or 20. In my experience, they usually offer about 10%-20% of estimated value on most things, guns or other.

So, what I'm getting in summation is, loosen the screw on the trigger spring and Lock Tight it back in place, and additionally, grease the action. I'm fine with that, but me personally, I'd rather spend an extra $25.00 and buy an used H&R at a gun show.
