Was on a jury years ago where someone made over £20 million in VAT fraud buying and selling computer chips. Most of the money disappeared into the Cayman Islands though and was unlikely to be ever recovered
@wax-6985

That sound like what you call carousel fraud, import and export of high value small items that never actually move other than a paper trail of invoices through fictional companies. Mobile phones, chips anything small and pricey

@@wax-6985 yep, that’s it. In this case though they additionally were buying computer chips and not paying VAT as they said they were exporting them, then they sold them to another company at a reduced price and charged VAT. I know right. But when VIPs, celebrities and politicians get found they simply say sorry, agree a token settlement and forget about it. Joe Bloggs (not this guy) gets the full weight of the law because he made a mistake on his tax return because, contrary to the adverts, tax is indeed taxing.

What Google, Amazon, Starbucks, etc., etc. do with concern to their tax liabilities, is not illegal. It maybe immoral, but not illegal. If everyone stopped using these companies, then there would be no discussion about their tax issues. But stopping people using them is like stopping tye sun from rising.

VAT is the bigger fraud. I pay tax on my earnings, so that money has been taxed already. Then I get it taxed again from buying pretty much anything, it's not a "luxury tax". I even have to pay it on used cars if they come from a trader, VAT was already claimed on the sale of it when new.

18 months suspended for 2 years is a joke, no wonder there are many willing to risk these scams, as the rewards are far in excess of the punishment.😲⚠️😳🤔 Edit - re Lego, I remember when I used to buy Lego with my pocket money as a kid but prices of the stuff now, you'd need a small mortgage! ⚠️😳🤔😲 £1500 doesn't get you much Lego.

You can understand why some people do this. VAT and tax are an absolute rip off and if it can be got round it’s going to be done. Obviously this is/was excessive and greed was clearly a factor. But don’t we all do a bit of this at times. It’s called “DelBoy” accounting!
@duplicitouskendoll9402

I wish they would just simplify the tax system and make everyone pay VAT at all times. You'll still get fraud, but not nearly as much without so many loopholes, exemptions and grey areas.

''Cooking the books'' to reduce V.A.T., and corporation tax liabilities is fairly widespread throughout most businesses and quite rightly carries severe penalties when discovered, which it usually is. Some companies even go to the extreme measure of employing chefs instead of accountants, ha. However, the not uncommon practice of wilfully raising fictitious invoices for the sole purpose of claiming back the V.A.T., element of the sales price is raw criminality and those who are detected and convicted of this crime should receive the maximum legal sentences.
@catman2629
@catman2629 2 года назад
HMRC used what they called Pre Credibility interventions to look at reclaims , they had some success in reducing them but some especially for MTIC fraud got through . The problems were the large number of chains the goods went through before being despatched to another EU country , and it’s was difficult and lengthy to make enquiries in other EU countries as HMRC didn’t have any powers in them . The chains were long typically 8 to 10buyers with one near the original purchase defaulting on paying output tax, the goods passed seamlessly ( if they ever even existed ) till the point of EC dispatch ( ie sale to an EU trader ) which was zero rated, but they could claim back the input tax , which was the honey they were after . Then if HMRC started dragging their heals high level complaints would come in to try and force the issue . The traders knew what they were into , it’s a bit like buying a nice Rolex cheap from a man down the pub that you had never ever met before.
@bertbox69
@bertbox69 2 года назад
You could also argue that VAT is a criminal act in itself. It's a cash cow governments have been using to milk the populace by taxing every aspect of daily life. it was only designed to raise revenue after the war. What suckers we are.

@RadioJonophone
@RadioJonophone 2 года назад
To limit the liability to the company, a fictitious entity that cannot be prosecuted or imprisoned, thus protecting the Directors from direct responsibility for company debts. The shareholders risk their cash disappearing, but are not called upon to make good any losses. It is argued that without such a device, business would be stifled. Only those extending lending to such companies are really at risk. Lenders charge interest to cover the risk, so it is said, so nobody really loses in the event of a liquidation.

I beg your pardon Sir. As a humble Artisan, a Plumber. I only see the work I do, Materials I purchase which I pay VAT on. Myself and the Customer pay Tax together on a job I do and which they pay for. The Government are poncing off the both of us ( Robin Hood Vs King John Legend). As I see it from the bottom end is the Government claim they lose £££ in VAT but it’s £££ they haven’t taken out of our hands for contributing anything.
