Hi Dan, so how did the OEX Leviathan EV 900 do? Has is kept you warm enough so far this winter? Are its temperature gauge ratings accurate? Talk to me Dan! Is it worth the money to buy one like it?

Only use down bags nowadays, they are so much warmer. 1500 version when it's minus temps, 1000 version 0-10deg, 600 version for pure summer use. The 1000 version gets the most use here in southern UK. I store them all in large net bags when not in use. It's good they supplied a large bag with this bag. Most don't do this.

Another good honest review bud it's great to see what's out there on the market. I wouldn't buy one at that price even those that is an excellent reduction not only the cost but the bulk is way to big for my kit. Just got back from Go Outdoors with one Dan, i am just reminding myself what you thought about it...i paid 119 quid and i thought that was a bargain ....i do have a North Face sleeping bag that is good to go down to minus 30 in and i have spent the night in the Pyrenese at minus 20 and it was warm enough but only just while i was wearing thermal underwear by Helly Hensen so i am keen to find out how this much cheaper bag compares...I paid over 400 quid for my North face but it doesnt pack down as well as this OEX which is the only reason i bought it bevause i want to do some minimalist light weight winter wild camping...thanks for all the effort you put into making your vids mate .

Good you can vent the bottom zip on it. I have duck down in my rab Accent 700 1.3 kg 80/20 feather. 650 mix. I would not go lower than -7 in it without layering though . That's a bargain for 120 pound , ethically sourced too , be weary of the ratings though you should be good down to -8 on comfort in a bivvy i recon with no layers hope you get a good winter -12 to test it.

Good vid mate. I got that bag a couple of years ago. Not bad. Comfort rating is nonsense. I had it at -5 just before lockdown and was about OK. Zip is a complete disaster. Gets caught easy. Looks like a bargain Dan. It'd be too narrow for me as i like to have space to move around and sleep with my arm out of the bag. I use the British army sleep system (the latest one) and so far its been great. I can take as much as I need depending on the temperature and weather and this time of year dont need a tent, just the bivy or a basha. Its a bit bulky when combined, but I have a massive pack for winter so it fits in no problem with all my other gear. Great vid mate and decent review. Cheers.

Hi buddy, just cancelled my Amazon order for a Naturehike, and ordered this, going to use it in an Alpkit Elan should be fine for our winters. Now, as nobody has answered your question - Hydrophobic - is a treatment they do on the down filling, basically even if the filling gets damp it will retain its heat, great for a winter bivvy where your guaranteed to get some condensation, hope that helps you out buddy. In fairness buddy, I find down no good anyway. Slight bit of damp and they lose their heat real quickly, and wales is damp in the summer, let alone the winter when you'll be using this! Once it’s out of its storage bag it compresses down quite well in its compression sack as for holding water it doesn’t happen with this bag , like most modern own bags it’s hydrophobic meaning it repels moisture. I’ve had one for years and never had a problem with it

@@englishwoodsman army bags have a centre zip on the winter bag, side zip on the summer bag. I have the newest complete sleep system (winter bag, summer bag, liner and bivy bag) paid £120 for it all brand new in the bags. Its awsome in the cold weather and does away with the need for a tent if its dry or i just take a basha if not. Comes with super strong stuff sacks but combined is quite heavy. I use the summer bagbon its own this time of year and build up as the weather cools down. I've also got an old pat 52 down bag. Again a good bit of kit but bulky to carry. Still a much cheaper option to a branded shop bag.

@Jeff Hambleton there are normally three EN ratings given with a bag, comfort, lower limit and extreme. The comfort limit is what a standard sized healthy women can sleep in after feeding, with light clothing for 8hrs comfortably without sweating. Lower limit is what a standard sized male could sleep in after eating, lightly dressed for eight hrs without sweating. Extreme temperature limit is a nonsense and should be ignored. American ratings are slightly different than European ratings and some manufacturers such as rab use their own based on their athletes and customer feedback. Most reputable brands have fairly accurate ratings though some lesser brands can be very artistic with their temperature ratings. The fill power, and the down content and bag construction play a big part in proformance. The higher the fill power and the more quality down a bag contains, the better it will loft and the warmer it will insulate you. FP900 or even FP1000 of quality down will be far better than FP600 of feathers at same weight. Going to bed warm with food inside you and a suitably rated sleep mat for the conditions will have a major impact on your bag and sleep comfort. Don't skimp on your mat, it is as important as your bag for winter use. Most folk camping in the UK will never need a deep winter - 15° or more bag most of the time so it is far more cost effective to double bag on those rare occasions where the temps are expected to drop by double didgets (a summer bag inside a tree season bag and perhaps a lightweight bivvi bag with a decent set of dry sleeping only thermals should see most folk all right). Our extremely wet, damp and humid environment dosnt make down the ideal choice if your going to be out for a good few days on end, it looses its efficency once damp, even hydrophobic down. On the upside, weight for warmth and pack size is unparalleled by most synthetic bags though the gap is closing and synthetic holds up to damp a little better. Hope this helps.

Ripped off, I bought my Snugpak elite 4 about ten years ago, used it on Dartmoor, around the Brecon Beacons and in Scotland in December January and February, my favoured time's because there are hardly no other people about and I like the challenging conditions of winter, I've never been cold in it and its still going strong, I paid 80 quid for it, down is warm but highly overrated and overpriced, and if damp you loose all its heat retention.

I am about to buy the Elite 4 Softie ..it looks a great bit of kit for £90. It expands too. A wee bit bulky but who cares .. I want to be warm and I'll not be walking miles and miles. At 62, and not backpacked for over 12 years my legs couldn't walk miles and miles. 2021 will be my first time in a tent for ages. We have a campervan but just use duvets in it, so don't actually own any sleeping bags at the moment.
