I typically only listen to lessons by native Spanish speakers teaching in Spanish. But bro, your videos are super insiteful for helping a native English speaker think through Spanish expressions. Thanks for what youre doing. Super helpful. I teach in Spanish when I am in Mexico, but sometimes simple things like what you taight here cause me to second guess myself. Appreciate the clarity.

Think of it this way. Billy Martin was a great manger but no one...no one not even you would have put a bat in his hand the last swing of the bat in the 9th. Hell Bill Martín would have sent in a pinch hitter for Bill Martín! What come as a result of the gods' gift does not mean that one is self aware. For instance here is some English for you: Jack's house. What is thé ' there for? You are an English speaker of note and wide repute. Have at it Hoss! Most native speakers of any language are just thoughtlesly saying what was said since the day they were born. I asked a native Spanish speaker to translate "These frog legs taste like chicken". She turned to a co-worker in her 20ies and asked for her translation. She Saïd. Estes patas de la rana sabe a pollo.". The first lady who was around 70 said anca de la rana no son patas. I said to the one in her 20ies after she Saïd: everyone say no son patas son pés. I said Yo voy a cerrado mi hocico por quê yo soy un animal com mis pinche patas. What did I next tell her about thé bad words in Spanish. Head out and ask the first Spanish speaker you see about profane speech. Have at it Hoss! Here is poetic speech in song...who Is His Muse? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ef9QnZVpVd8.html

Really useful information, Paul, as always! I especially appreciate when you give examples of different countries (as it happens, Spain & Colombia are 2 of the 4 I'm particularly interested in). The grammarian in me is very curious about the reasoning behind the different verb tense use post-meal, but I'm also hearing your beneficial advice of just learning it one way and switching as needed when visiting another region.

I was thinking imperfect form would mean more like “The food was delicious as it always is” and the preterite would refer to “the food was delicious this time”… I think saying “la galleta estaba deliciosa” would be more of a compliment meaning that the cookies are delicious as usual.

Excellent video - thanks for all your excellent work. However, I have a question. I am literally just starting on my journey learning Spanish and I am led to believe that if you you wanted to say you were hot you would say "(Yo) tengo calor" as saying "(Yo) soy caliente" means you're feeling frisky 🙂. Does the same not apply to food then, as you seem to be saying here?
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish Год назад
With people, tengo calor is the correct way to say you are hot. Estoy caliente means that you are feeling frisky, but with items estar caliente just means hot. La estufa está caliente. (The stove is hot).

Hi, first a big thank you with your videos. I never thought I would have to speak Spanish so didn't pay much attention to it but turns out I fell in love with a women whose mothertounge is spanish. XD we're now married, so that worked out fine but learning Spanish is a struggle. I'm a beginner and I still have problems with direct and indirect objects. Enough rambling, to my question: in your example sentence you wrote: 'está bueno pero la salsa que le pusieron es salada.' I wonder about the use of the le. It's the indirect object marker. Why is it le pusieron and not les pusieron? And why do you use le at all? Can you say: se la pusieron?
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish Год назад
Direct and indirect object pronouns are challenging. In the sentence, está bueno pero la salsa que le pusieron es salada. The LE is referring "on it" or "in it" the "it" being the chicken. This is common with poner and food/drinks. Me encanta la bebida. ¿Qué le pusiste? I love the drink. What did you put in it?

Fue, era, and es. Fue is one time. Thus it must have an antécédent that Is known to everyone reading or en conversation. The ship went down just as we were eating. The food tasted great. It was our last meal. Translate that. See tasted. Tasted like fue tell us It tasted but never again. See that was in last meal? That tell us we were acustom to eating before the ship sank. There there is the (writers) littérature's past called the historical past. Yo estoy en la iglesia. Estoy comiendo el cuerpo del Cristo con todo mundo...para los últimos 2000 mil años. When was I in the church? When was the whole Christian world in the church? So which past should one use? Use the one you can use Now. Then add the others as you get used to hearing and reading time passing on thé verb. No one will get mad if one's verbal time is not the real conversacional time. Just like in English: Did you put the money in the bank? No. Why not? I was on the way. The car ran out of gas. It is always running out of gas because you never fill it up! See how English uses the three verbal times also. (Ser and Estar have also a subjuntivo pasado and a past with verbs like haber...helper verbs. He escrito lo bastante or lo suficiente? To use one of Paul's usages.) When It comes to time all Indo-Européen use the same système. So understand that you already know verbal Européen time. You just need to change the partical -ed, was for estaba, and is for es. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G7OzWZH1_Hw.html

Como esta/n is fine too. The one reason why I show que tal this way is because, not only common, it does not require a verb to be correct. That makes it easier for people, especially when referring to the past tense. No need to choose between the preterite or the imperfect here. Little tricks here and there can make it easier for non-native speakers to communicate.

What if they don't mention the object of the sentence, so instead of specifying la comida or the specific thing you ate? In English you'd use the neutral form for this (it). How do they ask "how was it" and how do you answer "it was great"? Or in Spanish are you always anchoring to some or other specific (gendered) object. I feel like I would spend a hundred years looking at my plate of food trying to decide its gender (is it food, a plate of food, a piece of chicken, some salsa blah blah) This is why I can' t get past the loss of the English neutral. It allows us a way out of specifying the object.
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish Год назад
If you omit an object, you have to replace it with something like LO, LA, LOS, LAS, LES etc, but you can omit the subject without replacing it with anything. ¿Qué tal el pollo? Está bueno. It is good. It is the subject of the sentence. Compare that with - Comí el pollo. I ate the chicken. lo comí. I ate it. Pollo is the object here so it has to be replaced with an object pronoun.

Caravaggio está frente a la estatua. La estatua está en ese barco flotando en el río. La estatua es de Benito Mussolini. Eso no es posible porque Caravaggio está muerto. Ser and the Latin word Statue are the same but one a verb of being and the other a substantivo of human manufacture. ser means to stand in Latin. The English is the same. "He stands there." VS. "He is there". Interrogative why does he stand there? Vs. What is he doing there. The nature of ser to stand and estar to be in a finite space in a finite time and most often in a verb of action. Tu eres Columbiana y tristemente que tú no puedes cambiar. But above Caravaggio Is dead. He cannot change his state! Estás bien? No tengo cáncer terminal. Estaré muerto en cinco días. Damn I cannot rid my self of cáncer but still I use (esse Latin)Estar. Here is the rub. First one can only ask any given person a maximum of 10 questions a day without that person getting so mad they will run away every time the see one next. Second language is idiomatique. The use of ser and estar are very idiomatique. Therefore only ask a question you are close to knowing what is going on with for example Ser and Estar. What you are looking for are form, order, fréquence, personal taste and personal style. Here is an English example. "He be ill-en". Sounds bad to your pristine English ears but that is perfect English. Translate "He be ill-en to Spanish. Always be certain of the words, phrases, and sentences one wants to translate before translation. That is why it takes so long to learn anything. It takes 28 years to learn English. One can learn Spanish while learning English but it is a grave epistemologíacal error to assume that anyone can grasp a language with over a million words like English. Language is idiomatique because the Universe is in a constant state of flux... nothing fixed...nothing of permanence. Translate this song: (Things are so bad for me that now I have to learn Old English. Shakespeare's English is Modern English by the way.). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GfSK72YJBhg.html
