Synopsis of the Film-
ये कहानी है निरुपमा की……जिसकी तीन बेटियां हैं…..और पति सास ससुर सबको वंश की चिंता है…….निरुपमा व्रत उपवास करती है…..सारे जतन करती है……उसकी ननद भी बाबा का आशीर्वाद दिलाने का नाटक करती है……पर अन्त में फिर लड़की हुई….सुन सास को जहां सांप-सूंघ जाता है…..पति जहां हलवाइयों से पकवान बनवा रहा था का हाथ रुक जाता है…..वहीं निरुपमा की जच्चगी में ही सांस रुक जाती है……मुंशी प्रेमचंद की कहानी "नैराश्य"
In Nairashya the writer once again hits out strongly at a very condemnable social evil prevalent in Indian in Indian families which makes women's life miseable. Ghamandi Lal Tripathi and his family desperately long for a son but Nirupma, Ghamdni Lal's wife was given birth of girls, twice. A heart broken Ghamandi Lal, curses his wife and ill treats her for his tormenting failure. Nirupman is having a miserable time when all of a sudden one day her sister in law comes to her rescur. Ghamandi Lal receives a letter from Sukeshi (Nirupma's sister in law), she knows a renowned saint whose blessings never fail. She wants Nirupama to meet the holy man. Ghamandi Lal reluctantly sends his wife to Sukeshi. When Nirupama reaches Sukeshi's plce she is surprised to know that there was no saint. Sukreshi had lied. Sukeshi is a clever lady she tells Nirupama how she can regain her lost respect and place in the family. Nirupama returns home and lies that she has received the blessings of the holyman. After few months she is in a family way…… and behold……… everyone's behavior changes at once. All the family members start taking utmost care of her. She is not allowed to do any work. Good food, good clothes, expensive jewellery is being presented to her. She is being treated as a queen, all for the desperate longing for a son. But when once again she gives birth to a girl, all hell breaks lose. All the niceties vanish. She is again plunged in the same miserable plight she had been suffering for years. Once again Sukeshi her clever sister in law comes to her rescue. Sukeshi finds out some fault in the fulfillment of the instructions given by the holyman. She assures everyone if all the preequations, as instructed by the Mahatma are taken, Nirupama will definitely give birth to as many sons as the family wishes to have. Nirupama is enceinte once again and all the family members once again become generous, kind and compassionate towards her. Although the symptoms tell Nirupama that the child growing in her womb is a girl she pretends that it is a boy. She lies only to get love and respect from own family. All sorts of arrangements have been made to greet the arrival of a son but alas! ……. Once again a girl is born. All the family members are cursing Nirupama when the lady doctor comes out of Nirupama's room declares her dead.
