one main reason is, the EMU trains run for 100-130 km on average before they reach final destination, and they return back so the EMU loco pilot gets some time to relax before the train starts back on its next (return journey) while an express train travels huge distances and while the loco pilot shift is for 8 hours, they can't exactly clock out the moment their clock completes 8 hours, they have to reach the predetermined destination where the crew change happens. as this is a critical post, there is a need for 2-member crew for every locomotive, also, I heard that after training, one becomes an assistant loco pilot, then with experience becomes a loco pilot and then they are shifted to solo duty as an EMU loco pilot. this is what i have been told, i may be wrong though note, every station it passes, regardless of whether it stops or not, the assistant loco pilot and the guard show the green flag to someone similarly holding a green flag on the station so both (on train and on platform) confirm that the train has reached and has the clearance to pass that particular station.
