Has Periyar contributed to TN more than Tholkappiar, Thiruvalluvar, Simhavarman, from Pallava dynasty of Chidambaram Temple, Kulasekara Pandya of Madurai temple , Kambar, Sekkishar, Raja Raj Cholan, Karikal Cholan, Villiputhurar, Sambandar, Sundarar, Appar and Manickavasagar , King Kizhavan Sethupathi of Rameswaram temple, Andal, Arunigirinather, Ramanjum,Ramalinga Adihal, Barathiyar, @t Saminatha Ayyar, Nesamani, @t, V.O.C, Ramanujam,Sir.C.V.Raman, KamaRasar, Venketraman, Kannadasan, C.Sumbramaniyam, TVS Group, Nurugappa Group, Shiv Nadar, Ravi Shankar and Abdul Kalam. These people have contributed many which have changed TN in one or other field. is Periyar bigger than these great people.
While the contributions of these people are cultural and literary, the contributions of Thandhai Periyar was mainly for the upliftment of the society. We are all given a lot of baggage in the name of religion and caste since birth. It’s not easy to believe in just ourselves and live life simply and responsibly on our terms with acceptance and joy. Thanthai Periyar taught us this. He was a very necessary product of his times, a pioneer who was born ahead of times though and hence it was difficult to accept him. Now with all the freedom and liberty we have it is easy to take things for granted but had it not been for that strong man, we wouldn’t be where we are already. Forgetting Thanthai Periyar is being ungrateful to the good liberated lives we live! I say this as a woman from a backward class community. The name humbles me and I can only bow in awe and respect and salute this man.
Black was said to be an inauspicious color and so he wears it as proof that it’s just another color like all other colors and that you can live a normal life when you wear it.
