MUHARRAM - THE MONTH OF EXTREME GREIVING AND NOT CELEBRATION Muharram is the First Month of the Islamic Calendar. Since the most significant and tragic event of this month is the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), the followers of Islam spend this month in mourning the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain (pbuh), and do not celebrate it like a festival. Imam Hussain, the Grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the younger son of Imam Ali and Fatima Zahra (S.A.) was killed, along with his 72 followers , by a cruel, wicked, evil, corrupt, and irreligious person. His name was Yazid. Yazid was a big tyrant and was a man without any principles or morals and did everything against the principles of Islam as taught by the Prophet Muhammed. Imam Hussain (pbuh), refused to accept him as their Religious Head ( Caliph ) and stood up against his unholy and immoral practices. In Karbala, Imam Hussain, , along with his family and friends, were mercilessly killed under very cruel circumstances , thirsty and hungry after having being denied access to water or food for three days, which included a Six Month Old Baby , who was ultimately killed by a Three headed Arrow..!! , in the hot desert sands of Karbala for one goal. his goal was to save Islam, the Holy Quran and the teachings of the Holy Prophet and indeed Human Values from being wiped out. Their bodies were mutilated and their heads were paraded through various cities. His womenfolk were taken prisoners and marched across the desert. . Yazid wanted to wipe out the entire religion and sow the seeds of inhumanity. If not for the sacrifice of Imam Hussain, he would’ve succeeded. Every year, through centuries, the Month of Muharram recharges our spiritual and emotional selves reminding us the Supreme sacrifice of the Imam which has kept alive Islam and Human Values. In undying affection and allegiance to Imam Hussain ( pbuh ) , the Shia Muslims in particular, show their respect and gratitude to Imam Hussain, his family and companions by spending the month of Muharram in grieving. Self flagellation, accompanied by chanting of poetic verses describing the tragedy is a symbolic gesture to convey our willingness to shed our blood had we been with the Imam in Karbala. Had it not been for these ceremonies, the message of Imam Hussain would have been lost for Humanity and would have resulted in Evil winning over Good. Many great Leaders of our Nation like Mahatma Gandhi etc. have euologized Imam Hussain and has quoted extensively Imam Hussain’s Idealogies in his Freedom Struggle. Indeed, by sacrifcing his whole lot, Imam Hussain has established a standard that no matter how mighty the Oppressors are , TRUTH , STEADFASTNESS TO FAITH ALWAYS COMES OUT VICTORIUS. Today after nearly 14 Centuries have passed, the Revoultion that the Martyrdom of Imam Hussain brought, is fresh and alive and shall continue to do so fiorever ….and ever…

It is because of this great sacrifice offered by Imam Hussain (a.s) that the True religion of Islam as brought to us by our Holy Prophet Mohammad (s.a.w) still exists. Else, Yazid would have changed everything including Namaz. And he would have made alcohol permissible in Masjid. You can make fun of mourning as much as you like, be rest assured when you get questioned by our Holy Prophet Mohammad (s.a.w) on the Day of Judgement, whether you wept for his Grandson and grieved over the atrocities which befell him, or you made fun and cracked jokes on the tragedy of Karbala and mourning. A community which doesn't remember or respect it's martyrs is as good as being lifeless. Btw, the Hadees which you quote that Prophet Musa (a.s) saved the children of Israel on this day and fasting is recommended on 10th Muharram is fabricated. This was a Hadees drafted to hide the historical facts and mislead people like yourselves.

He is following the wrong way. Many Muslim are following the wrong things which are not actually Islamic way which is preached by our beloved prophet. Muharram is meant as the new year for Islamic people as per the yearly calendar. Muslim responsibility is to be devoted to God and keep fast.
