After his success in Egypt, Caesar returned to Rome.. He was becoming one of the most powerful men, Rome has ever seen. Envied by his status and threatened by his achievements, he was assassinated by a group of senators including Brutus and Cassius in 44 B.C. Following Caesar’s murder, his cousin, Mark Antony, allied with the forces of Octavian who was the nephew, and heir of Caesar to defeat the betrayers.
After winning the war, it was agreed that Octavian would rule Roman lands in the west and Antony in the east. Tensions developed between Antony and Octavian when the former allied with Cleopatra. Joint forces of Antony and Cleopatra were defeated in the Battle of Actium in 31 B.C. After the war, Octavian became more powerful and declared himself the first emperor of Rome on 27 B.C. and named himself Augustus Caesar.
