അഡിക് ഷനും ജീവിതശൈലീരോഗങ്ങളും- Addiction and lifestyle diseases- Dr C Viswanatan.Substance abuse ( Alcohol, Tobacco) and Obesity are two most important preventable threats to public health in Kerala. Heart attacks, Strokes, cancers, chronic lung diseases and many other killer disease states are directly attributable to tobacco, alcohol and Obesity.Based on recent research, mainly from Nora Volkow and her associates, Dr. Viswanathan presents the current scientific view that both addiction and Obesity have an important common element: Both conditions involve the reward circuit in the brain that drives the motivation of individuals to consume rewards despite the fact that they are harmful to their health.Obesity may be considered to be caused by an addiction to food . In Nora Volkow's words, "“Expression of the disorder is very similar: Inability to stop taking the drug when addicted, even when you may not want to take it any more. Obese people- cannot stop overeating ,even when they know that the consequences can be very adverse. Compulsive nature of the consumption of the reward, inability to exert self control vis-a-vis that reward entail disruptions in the circuits of the brain that are similar in terms of addiction and obesity”
