Great presentation and good to talk about the big picture. One drawback I felt is that apart from the criticisms about the environmentalists that romanticize environmental protection you didn't focus on any of the climate change mitigation strategies. I'm doing a PhD in Finland on climate change and its impacts on the Arctic ecosystems. As you said forests can act as a carbon sink but they also produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can form secondary organic aerosols that can act as cloud condensation nuclei. Therefore forests can affect climate directly/indirectly and planting trees is mostly beneficial (location and type matters). The main concerns we should have are: 1. fossil fuel dependent energy sector and how fast we can transition to green energy 2. land use changes: deforestation and rapid urbanization. Policies to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions within the Paris agreement and restrictions on land use is the way forward. PS: We know that we are responsible for the biodiversity loss and extinction of countless species day by day. If we just think about our survival and not care about others we will be slow with our actions and then I think it will in turn doom ourselves.

പ്രകൃതി സംരക്ഷണ വാദത്തിലെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ പരിമിതി. മരങ്ങളുടെ സരംക്ഷണം മാത്രമായി മാറി എന്ന കാര്യം ശരിയാണ്. പക്ഷെ . സുദീർഘമായ കാലത്തിലൂടെ രൂപപ്പെട്ടതും, അതീവ സങ്കീർണ്ണവുമായ ഒരു ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥയിൽ . കാര്യമായ പഠനങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും ഇല്ലാതെയുള്ള നമ്മുടെ ഇടപെടലുകൾ, നമ്മുടെ ത്തന്നെ നിലനില്പിനു ഭീഷണയാകും എന്നതാണ് കാര്യമായ പ്രശ്നം : ചരിത്രത്തിൽ ഉദാ : ധാരാളമുണ്ട് , അമേരിക്കയിലെ - ഡസ്റ്റ് ബൗൾ (പൊടി കൊടുങ്കാറ്റ് ).സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയനിലെ 68000- ച.കി.മീ.വിസ്തീർണ്ണമുള്ള ആറൽ തടാകം ഇല്ലാതായത്. ചൈനയിലെ കുരുവികളുടെ കൂട്ടകൊല . തുടങ്ങിയവ.
സുധീർഘമായ കാലത്തിലൂടെ രൂപപ്പെട്ട ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥ എന്നുപറയുമ്പോൾ മനുഷ്യ വംശം ഉദയകൊള്ളുന്നതിനും മുമ്പേ പ്രകൃതിയിൽ മാറ്റം സംഭവിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു എന്ന് തന്നെയല്ലേ അർഥം. അപ്പോൾ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ഇടപെടൽ ഇല്ലാതെയും പ്രകൃതിയിൽ മാറ്റം സംഭവിക്കും എന്ന് വ്യക്തമല്ലേ. അതായത് നമ്മൾ പരസ്ഥിതിക്ക് ദോഷം വരുത്തുന്ന പ്രവർത്തികൾ ചെയ്യാതിരുന്നാലും കാലാവസ്ഥാ വ്യതി യാനങ്ങളും പ്രകൃതി ദുരന്തങ്ങളും ഒക്കെ സംഭവിക്കുമെന്ന്.അങ്ങനെയെങ്കിൽ മനുഷ്യന്റെ നിലനിൽപ്പിനായും ജീവിതാവസ്ഥയിൽ പരിവർത്തനം വരുത്താനും പ്രകൃതിയിൽ ഇടപെടുന്നതിൽ എന്താണ് തെറ്റ്. മനുഷ്യൻ ഇടപെട്ടില്ലെങ്കിലും പ്രകൃതിയിൽ മാറ്റം സംഭവിക്കുമെന്നതിനാൽ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവിതം കരുപ്പിടിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്തിനായി പ്രകൃതിയിൽ ഇടപെടുന്നതിന്റെ പ്രത്യാഘാതം അത്ര ഭയങ്കരമൊന്നുമല്ല. പ്രകൃതിയോടും പ്രകൃതി പ്രതിഭാസങ്ങളോടും ഏറ്റുമുട്ടി തന്നെയാണ് മനുഷ്യൻ ഈ പുരോഗതി കൈവരിച്ചത്. ഈ പുരോഗതിയുടെ തോത് പല നാടുകളിലും പലതായിരിക്കുന്നതിനാൽ മഹാ ഭൂരിപക്ഷം ജനങ്ങളും താഴെ തട്ടിൽ കിടക്കുന്നതിനാൽ ഇനിയും പ്രകൃതിയിൽ ഇടപെടേണ്ടി വരും. പക്ഷേ അത് പാടില്ല എന്ന് പുരോഗതിയുടെയും ആഡംബര ജീവിതത്തിന്റെയും ഉച്ചസ്ഥായിയിൽ നിൽക്കുന്ന പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരുടെ പാഠങ്ങൾ തൊള്ള തൊടാതെ വിഴുങ്ങേണ്ട കാര്യമൊന്നുമില്ല. അവരുടെ രാഷ്ട്രീയവും സാമ്പത്തികവുമായ ദുഷ്ട ലാക്ക് കണ്ടില്ലാ എന്ന് നടിക്കാനും പാടില്ല.

മരങ്ങൾക്ക് perspiration എന്നൊന്നുണ്ട്. ധാരാളം നീരാവി / water vapour പുറത്തേയ്ക്ക് വീടുന്നു. ഈ humidity കൂടുതലുള്ള അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന് മുകളിൽ എത്തുന്ന മഴമേഘങ്ങൾ condense ചെയ്യുന്നത് എളുപ്പം സംഭവിക്കുന്നു. അവിടെ അങ്ങനെ മഴ പെയ്യാനുള്ള സാദ്ധ്യത കൂടുന്നു.

നല്ല സന്ദേശം. ഒരു സംശയം. അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിലെ ഓക്സിജന്റെ അളവ് 21 ശതമാനം എന്നാണ് പഠിച്ചിരുന്നത്. Detector വച്ച് പരിശോധിച്ചാൽ 20.9 എന്നൊക്കെയാണ് കിട്ടുന്നത്. ഈ പ്രഭാഷണത്തിൽ താങ്കൾ ഓക്സിജന്റെ അളവ് 24 % എന്ന് പല പ്രാവശ്യം പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഏതാണ് ശരി?

Dr. Vaishakhsn Thampi is a good scientist and can talk eloquently about many scientific topics - astronomy, universe and it's mysteries are some of his favourite subjects. But climate change and the consequent crisis are not just technical topics - they are highly political. It is futile to think that s solution can be found to this problem through purely technological means. He keeps saying that this is a "man made" problem. But is an impoverished starving man in Ethiopia equally responsible for it as an affluent man in an "advanced" country like USA, UK, France etc.? The 2022 IPCC report makes it clear that these western capitalistic countries are wholly tesponsible for it. But this is an uncomfortable position to take, especially for simeone who claims to be an apolitical scientist.
