You are to consider three main things when selecting a submersible pump for an aquaponics aquaculture.
First of all how much water is in your fish pond. From that you need to know how many liters of water need to be pumped per hour.
Second is how high the water needs to be pumped.
Thirdly, how many watts of electricity are used to operate this pump?
We use pumps from various companies on our farm. In this video we are going to introduce you to the JTP 16000 model pump from a company named Sunsun which was newly purchased for the Aquaponics unit.
The two most required electrical devices for Aquaponics aquaculture are the air pump needed to oxygenate the fish, as well as a submersible pump to rotate the water in the pond. These should be purchased only after understanding the basics of the number of fish you intend to raise in the pond and the number of liters of water present in the pond. In many of our previous videos we have already explained how to select the required air pump for the fish pond. We bought a JTP 16000 model pump from the company Sunsun for this particular Aquaponics unit which consist of one cent pond and 3 cents of grow bed.
In this pond, a half HP motor pump of the model which are placed outside has been in use for about six months. After understanding some of the shortcomings of this Aquaponics unit we decided to change this pump.
The first reason was that we were pumping water to the filter unit every half hour using this pump. But continuous pumping of water in an Aquaponics unit is essential for the growth of plants and bacteria growing in the filter unit and grow bed.
Second reason is that the motor pump kept outside gets heated if it is operated continuously.
The third reason is that this pump uses close to 500 watts of electricity per hour to work. So this pump was replaced after realizing that using a low wattage pump instead could reduce the electricity bill to some extent.
Sunsun is a brand that is very popular among fish farmers. Of these, various pumps in the JTP series are available in the market. JTP 1800 to 16,000 models are on the market today. The JTP10000 to 16000 model pumps all come in the same model and the same packing. This box has a photo of the pump on the front side. The only brand name JTP and company name Sunsun is mentioned in the box. It has been mentioned above the box that this pump can save 50% energy compared to other pumps.
Similarly, the details of the box are given on one side and the rest on the other. JTP 10,000 to 16,000 comes in the same box. That's why a red tick is marked here at JTP 16,000.
Here is the performance comparison chart of all JTP pumps from 10,000 to 16,000. What is meant by JTP10000 is that it can pump ten thousand liters per hour. Similarly, the JTP 16,000 model pump can pump 16,000 liters of water per hour.
Here is how many watts of electricity each pump requires to work. If the JTP 10,000 model uses 80 watts of electricity to work, this JTP16000 model pump requires 140 watts of electricity.
It also shows the maximum height to which water can be pumped. As you can see in this chart, The JTP10000 model pump can only pump up to 6 m height. But the JTP 16000 model pump can pump up to seven and a half meters of height. But when water is pumped to this height, it is not guaranteed to get 16,000 liters per hour. They estimate that 16,000 liters is zero head.
