A bunch of ungraded clips shot with the new Panasonic HC-X1 camcorder (pre-production model). All clips captured in a modified Filmlike Gamma3, 4K 50p 150Mbit/s. All footage conformed to 24p in post. I am really starting to like this camera. The dynamic range is great, and the 50/60p 4K looks fantastic. Will post settings here later on. All footage shot handheld, some of the long shots stabilized in FCPX.
Location: Dingle, Sweden.

Hi Martin - just wanted to say that I keep coming back to this short film you shot on the HC X1. Of all the examples I can find on RU-vid this is by far the best quality example I can find in my research about this camera. Having shot on DSLR's and several lenses I have been looking for an 'all in 1' camera for using on a film production. Having looked at this film you shot several times and comparing it with the Son A7S II I have to say visually I really like how you have managed to create a 'film' look using the setup on your HC X1. I guess with taking time to find the correct settings it's possible to make this camera feel a lot less like 'camcorder' footage and more like film - with your experience of using this camera and DSLR's would you say the same ?

Lovely job mate. I was looking at the HC-X1 to replace my old Canon XH-A1 but got side tracked with the Panasonic FZ2500. I shoot a lot of stuff at full zoom, slow pan and zoom back. Early to late morning so low light to harsh morning sun. We also use a drone but still like to have a tripod option as I get most of my 'spontaneous' stuff from that sort of setup. Have you sampled any still photos from the HC-X1? Cheers and thanks for the inspirational footage. Bill Watson.

Hi Martin! I started following your channel a few weeks back while I was searching for demos on the HC X1. I was so inspired by your video that I purchased this beauty a few days ago. So far I absolutely love it. There are so many options that it is driving me insane. haha I am going to be using it to shoot a wedding next weekend and I was wondering what settings you would use to do this. Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Hey! I was wondering why you shot in 50p and converted into 24p in post! What exactly does this achieve, or was it coincidental? The footage looks awesome!
@audioxix
@audioxix 5 лет назад
He wanted to slow down the footage for a more cinematic and emotion driven style. If he shot at 24p, it would be normal speed, it wouldn't have the desired effect he was going for. For Cinematography you shoot in a variety of frame rates, depending on what you want to do with the footage. If you are intending to slow down the image, you shoot at a higher frame rate than you base project frame-rate (normally every choice the common 24p for their base frame rate), now depending on how much you want to slow down by, will dictate which higher frame rate you choice. Going from 50p to 24p you are only just essentially half timing it evenly. The motion will be smooth and be a lot slower, however it wont be so slow as to classify as slow motion. Normally people with shoot in 60 to 120 fps if they want super slow motion and a smooth framing, when dropping back down to 24p. If you want to learn a little more about the topic (it's essential to know about frame rates and when to use them, if you are planning on getting into the cinematography field), then check out this video for, probably one of the easiest to understand for beginners and from an incredible and well known cinematography names Brandon Li ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dR7B8uKc0JUh.htmlttps://ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dR7B8uKc0JU.html

Nice shots! Thanks for sharing - watching at full 4K on a reasonable sized monitor shows up quite a lot of 'wobbly' in some of the shots - is that due to rolling shutter or something else? (eg. 00:42) How bad was that pre-FCPX stablisation? It looks like the resolution has dropped quite a bit where you've used the stablisation - was that due to the amount of movement that needed to be normalised? Thank again for sharing - again, great work on your part - if my questions/comments seem picky it's because I'm very interested in this camera - by no means are they directed at you / your work!
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 лет назад
Thanks Domonic, no worries! The wobble is due to a few scenes being quite shaky on my part, I was in a real hurry shooting these and had no tripod at hand. Yes, the slight rolling shutter and long focal length makes the wobbling. Resolution takes a hit when stabilized in post, especially when you're using the 'tripod' option in FCPX for fixed position simulation. That particular scene was shot at 480mm and I was quite shaky due to the cold. ;) I find rolling shutter to be very well controlled in the X1 though, most shots I've stabilized works better than with the FZ2000 and GH4 on long shots, so there seems to be an improvement. The main reason for these shots was to show the picture ungraded from this custom profile, some of the shots I had rather shot on a tripod for the sake of sharpness. It should be noted, too that this test was shot with detail enhancements dialed down all the way in camera, to make rather soft and cinematic images than sharp and popping imagery. Thanks for your feedback! The cam is a great performer, I like it a lot for nature work.
@domonicwhite
@domonicwhite 7 лет назад
You rock sir! Thanks for taking the time to clarify (and share your great work)... I'm very much thinking of this for a nature project I have coming up next year, so it's good to see your excellent results and to hear you feel it's a valid camera for such scenarios...
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 лет назад
Thanks! No probs. :) Sounds like an exciting project, what kind of environment will you be shooting in? As much as I like the HC-X1, depending on what time next year you're planning for, I think you really should take a look at the GH5 when there's more info released from Panasonic. Also worth to mention, I did a nature filmshoot recently in Japan with the new FZ2000 (FZ2500 in the US) for the promo, and I absolutely love that camera for both photography and film, because of its unique flexibility and compact form factor (it's basically built around the same lens as the X1, but with a 20MP 1" sensor that makes the same lens 36-720mm in 4K). Sometimes when shooting in nature, you need a few different tools to cover the whereabouts. Not to confuse you with more options into the pot, but to give you an idea of what's possible! Here's what I shot in Japan with the FZ2000 in a modified CineLike V profile, internal 8-bit recording, graded in Filmconvert Pro. A lot of it was shot handheld: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C-kaamEC8Ms.html

It'll be in South Africa - second quarter of the year most likely. GH5 on radar but I was hoping to find a camera with a non-dslr form factor to help with stability and handling - plus the zoom range on the HC-X1 really appeals. Would LOVE to got to Japan one day! Thanks for sharing that video too!

@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 лет назад
Thanks! Haven't done too much gain tests yet, but I did set the switch levels to 0, 6 and 12dB which looked like the threshold where things started to go downhill a bit, but then again this tweaked scene file is letting all noise out basically, not much NR. It depends a lot on personal taste I guess. :)

bonjour could you compare please PANASONIC DVX200 with the new panasonic UX 90 , UX 180 and HCX1… DVX200 has 4/3 sensor but do not have HDR recording mode and the others panasonic have 1inch sensor but maybe with HDR the quality of pictures are nearly the same …..and even maybe in low light (concert , street , sunset…)…thank you very much… Tobias from caribbean (do you think with a firmware DVX200 could do HDR too?)
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 лет назад
Hi Tobias, the DVX200 is a lot bigger form factor than the X1. HDR-mode is only on the smaller consumer camcorders like VXF990 and VX980. That technology is basically implemented to make it possible to shoot better dynamic range with that small sensor (1/2") and should not be confused with the new HDR10 or Dolby Vision HDR possibilities that Amazon, Netflix and recently RU-vid has been rolling out along with new standard for TV's. The DVX200 can shoot V-LogL footage in 10-bit externally to recorder, which in fact makes the camera compatible with shooting HDR10 material for Netflix etc. The HC-X1 and the UX180, UX90 cameras are only 8-bit internal and external, and will not shoot Log footage like the DVX200. The X1 and UX180 is identical except for the SDI-connections and Genlock, all else is the same. UX90 has a smaller 15X zoom lens, and it can not be switched to 50/60Hz environments like the other cameras, it is a more consumer oriented shooter. It's very unlikely that a camera without HDR (the mode used in the consumer models) will get it through firmware upgrade. The 1" sensor performs very well in terms of dynamic range and low light, even compared to the larger sensor in the DVX200 the sensor is pretty good. I would say there's about 1 stop difference (3dB) between the two.

Nice video! Could you confirm this camera can record simultaneously to both cards in UHD 50/60p? Thanks!
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 лет назад
Ante Šušnjar Koko Thanks! Yes, it can record simultaneously or relay rec.
7 лет назад
Thanks. Do you know what is the minimum focusing distance?
@MartinWallgrenPhotography
@MartinWallgrenPhotography 7 лет назад
Yes, it's roughly 5cm from the front lens at wide to approx 55mm (150mm equiv.) and the imaging area horizontally is roughly 4cm at the lens threshold point (highest magnification point) at around 55mm, in normal 4K UHD modes and only optical zoom. That's quite remarkable for a 1" sensor cam, it's basically the same magnification ratio as shooting with a 180mm 1:1 dedicated macro lens on a full frame DSLR.... :) On the lens longest end (176mm) the close focus drops to about 1m.
7 лет назад
Martin Wallgren thank you, appreciate your help. that is quite remarkable as you say! only waiting for few more low light test, and comparison vs. dvx200 so I will make a decision which one is best.
