CNN's Laura Coates discusses why some conservatives are celebrating the US women's soccer team's recent World Cup loss with Rachel Nichols, host of "Headliners with Rachel Nichols." #CNN #News
I just made the comment that the teams that I saw were singing their National Anthems with pride and enthusiasm. The USA team, with the exception of two players, just stood there with their heads down. It didn't strike me as being patriotic.
@@lollymanna Many do, both fans and players. Many remove their caps and place their hands over their hearts and/or stand at attention facing the flag. The caveat being is that those American players are representing their privately owned team of their city that is within the USA and neighboring Canada. The fans are representing their fandom. What neither are doing, is representing a country on the world stage.
They didn't even have to sing it... But they actively pointed themselves away from the flag and didn't even show any respect to it. A hand over the heart or something.
We hate this team, not because they brought politics and agendas up instead of playing the game (although that can be part of it) we hate this team because they LIED. They pushed the “equal pay” BS which stirred up controversy to the point where they were proven, in a court of law, that they were actually being paid more than the men’s team. But they didn’t let that court decision stop them from pushing that narrative for years.
@@johnoreilly5356 the women’s team was offered the same contract the men were getting (pay to play). They turned it down for guaranteed base salary, health benefits, and a few other incentives. This was proven in their court case, but sure let’s go with misogyny and “the patriarchy”.
We cheer for OUR teams because we are AMERICANS, when the team isn't for the country they are representing then this is what you get! It's easy to understand.
People on this video are either mis-informed or willfully lying. It was alreay explained to CNN when the court case was decided that the women's team was paid more than the men, but here these women just don't want to admit it. Facts don't matter to CNN.
• They lost because they aren’t that good. • People are glad they lost because they want equal pay, but don’t (as a league) bring in nearly as much money as men. • A lot of people are glad because they are tired of athletes bringing politics into sports. ie., If you want to be publicly political, become a politician. - - - In the end, who really cares; we have bigger fish to fry.
No it’s because they focus too much on their political agendas rather than on the common goal of defending the championship. I m with Megyn on this one as well as others
@@maryhughes7642they lost because the US had paid more attention on women’s soccer before and had acquired a great team for that time. Now that the rest of the countries have been beaten, they bright in better coaches and better athletes and are taking as much focus as they take on male soccer for female one. Which means that it’s going to now get much harder for any female US team to win. We are talking about the countries that were obsessed with soccer for decades before. The US winning was due to them not paying attention where they should have originally.
I think people wanted them to lose because they kneel for the national anthem. People feel they disrespect America and that they represent whiny entitled Americans. Their complaints about equal pay for equal work was not a valid claim when you match the entertainment value up against men's soccer. The reason Celine Dion makes a lot of money is because her entertainment value demands a high ticket price. Whether male or female a person should be paid according to the revenue that is generated by the quality of the performance. Frankly, this team was beat by a team of under 15 year old boys so they don't provide the same entertainment value and draw as elite men's soccer does.
We are disappointed in a team that doesnt want to represent the US, not pushing political agendas and lying about how much they make or don't make. All things we do, come with repercussions. Some appreciated what the womens soccer team was "attempting" to do, for the rest of us that are Proud to be Americans, did not appreciate their lies and misdirection.
A good portion of Americans only ever heard of these women because they were spouting off about their politics and lying about their pay. They just seem like very disagreeable people. Not the best way to make yourselves known.
Agreed. And when Americans lose, they should do so with dignity, respect and work harder not to lose the next time. They should not lie, claim they won and do whatever it takes to not acknowledge that they lost. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Im not so much glad they lost as glad that more deserving teams who truly wanted to be there are still in it. This team was not focused, seemed to think the tournament was a celebrity photo op and their most prominent player was a total Karen. Why are people surprised this team didn't endear themselves to fans from the US or elsewhere?
Sorry but the women’s team is paid more than the men’s team, if you look at the documents, the women teams even if they are not playing get paid with additional benefits (insurance) the men’s team are on a play to pay contract so if they don’t pay they don’t get paid. On top of the women’s payment, they will get additional pay from the men’s team. So please tell me how that’s fair?
To represent a country in an international tournament means representing the people, values, and standards that the country is about. We cheer for our athletic representatives because they're an extension of us and what we are proud of as a country. This women's national team has not proven to me that they were willing to represent me or my country on the world stage. Instead choosing to disrespect both of those aspects. Therefore, I chose not to support them or cheer for them. They did not and do not represent me as an American citizen, they have chosen to represent themselves and have only themselves to blame for the poor performance and this early exit.
That’s right! freedom of speech only applies to people who agree with you? What would be a suitable punishment for the team? I’m curious because you guys are now openly advocating for the killing democrats. Vote trump back in and your country will fall to fascism…so if you disagree with anything Trump says, you’ll end up with a hole in your head.
I fully agree with you, but have to say, as of right now American standards are at an all time low sadly. There's very little respect for this country in the eyes of most of the int'l community.
This team might go down as one of America's least liked national squads of all time. You can't have it both ways. Decide to make playing a sport for your country a platform for your social and political views, and then demand that people like you. That's not how it works. They took risks in their actions, knowing full well it would either endear themselves to people or push them away. I think what a lot of us had a hard time with was all of the blatant arrogance. Whether in the pre world cup commercial, basically saying the rest of the world didn't have a chance, or how only one US player even gave a shred of respect to the Swedish team after the loss. Instead of working on maintaining their moment of dominance in the sport, they used their off time to promote their own social views. What they don't understand is that people only listened because they were winning. That all goes away now. My only hope is that the younger players can find a way to shed the stigma the country now has for them, and move into this new post Rapino era on their own terms. Not from an activist bully. Time will tell.

I stand with Megan Kelly! They didn't represent the United States. They used the sport and their platform to REPRESENT THEMSELVES! If you disrespect our National Anthem on the World's stage I have absolutely no respect for you or this team. 🇺🇸
this is why everyone hates them. because you and they keep on perpetuating the lie that "they just wanted equal pay for the same work". THE DAY that they challenge the men's team and beat them you got a case. they are doing no where close to the equal work.
Same problem over here in England. The are demanding equal pay and dissing the England Men's team. I am glad they lost the final to Spain. The England Men's team that haven't won a trophy since 1966 would single handedly walk the Women's world cup and win it if they were the only Men's team in that tournament. These people don't understand how biology, economics and business works.
This is a soccer issue, not a social issue. Portugal, Nigeria, and Columbia have fewer resources and yet they demonstrated ball control, smart passing and creativity. USWNT relied on size, aggression and athleticism in place of SKILL and WIT. ...and the finishing (PKs included) was GOD-AWFUL!
Meanwhile, watch how the Colombian team sang their hearts out during their National anthem before the quarter final game against England yesterday, with real passion and pride. And look at how their supporters reacted to them, with total feeling. It was such a massive contrast to the situation with the US team, and very telling.
All your anger and hatred and attacks against this women's soccer team only causes them to be MORE loved and for the US to invest MORE money in them and for MORE people to sympathize with them.
I love how "US women’s soccer team" thought it would be a good idea to play Dallas’ under 15 year old boys team and lost 2 to 5. Yet still cared more about getting "equal pay" wow
How the heck is this confusing? If a bunch of male soccer players were out there touting right wing talking points, no one would be confused at all when people pointed at them and laughed when they lost.

You should feel lucky to live in Germany as it appears that your country understands history and the dangers of fascism and has learned to shine a bright light to expose authoritarian-leaning parties like the AfD. Apparently people in the US missed school the day that the history of fascism was taught (or if they live in Florida, they removed history from the curriculum and banned the books). Hopefully we can learn from history in the US before it is too late, but one of our political parties is a cult led by a wannabe autocrat.
as it is, EVERYTHING in the divided USA is politicized 🤮 The US team did not lose because of their political beliefs! They lost because Sweden performed better! Heja Sverige! 🇸🇪
Replace the whole team, find strong proud American women that can keep there personal/political views off the field and focus on winning on the field, put together a REAL TEAM that will be honored to represent the United States 🇺🇸
these women will never understand that their pay is directly correlated to the revenue that they can generate from their games. Just like modelling, did you know the highest paid female model makes $40mil a year, while the highest paid male model gets $1.5mil a year. So in sports, ladies, you get your pay because this is how much tickets you can sell. Nuff said
Not true. The prior women's soccer team was paid significantly less than the men's soccer, even though the US women's team filled stadiums worldwide much more than the American men. Because of the hard work of the prior team, pay should be better in the future; however, the men are still paid more. Just so you know - This was the first Tournament for five US players, and many of the most experienced players have already retired; at least one more has already said she is retiring, and a few others are considering retiring. One last thing: the Sweden goalkeeper played an amazing game.
@@MartyFillingim Please also factor in the different contract terms they're getting. Women get paid fixed basic while men's team is on per game basis. And let's not forget, men's team doesn't have any benefit. So, in overall, women team has always get paid more.
Why is the media still saying they dont earn equjally when they lost their case as they actually have earnt more. They earn more in many ways. They chose a package of pay that means they get paid even when they don't play- eg during covid. I think when they say due their political beliefs- they meant the idea of karma. Can I say the problem I see with the USA team is they are too many individuals and they didn't work as a team. This is a problem in soccer.
They did not lose because of their political beliefs, but because they put their political beliefs ahead of the game. Zero focus. The entitlement is mine boggling. Were they activists or athletes ??? They lost to under 15 boys team, did they not??
No cause we as human beings have to believe that we lose for reasons other than talent or effort because we can't accept the fact other teams or countries were just better

That is obvious What should not be obvious at all is that so manyUSA fans have pilloried their own international team; something that rarely happens for the right reasons. I've seen a lot of discussion on opposing sides of this. I personally disagree with trying to "make a statement" during a National Anthem of any country. If you don't like what you're getting, don't play. There are other ways to negotiate that other than disrespecting your country. I went to my first Bruins game with a veteran and we were a little late, the national anthem started to play when we were in the Foyer and he STOPPED IN HIS TRACKS and took his hat off. That's a real hero who has fought for something.
Depends on your definition of "Disrespecting your country". My view is that, when they don't kneel they are disrespecting their fellow Americans, because after all, The US isn't a 'song, the US is 'a people", and, "the people of the US are being hurt by rules and laws being created to enslave them, especially, especially! women. I'm far from being a conservative and would never consider myself one simply due to how I was raised, but when you look at the actual FACTS you begin to understand that the problem the fans of the sport have, with the women's team, is that they were caught lying about the money they earned, they were then allowed to steal the money that wasn't theirs to have, and for this WC they show up and metaphorically spit in the face of Americans watching what is supposed to be their national team, by clearly showing that they don't have any love/patriotism for the country. Why should I give any support to a team, regardless of what they have in their damn uniform shorts, that blatantly lie, and then show that they don't give a crap about representing our country on the largest stage possible?
For someone who has been a soccer fan all their life and understands the game, it's absolutely grating to hear opinions from people who know absolutely nothing about it. The USWNT lost not because they're woke but because the completion in women's soccer has gotten much better in recent years after the world outside the US started taking women's soccer seriously. The USWNT was never this incredible team that the US media made it out to be. They just didn't have much competition in a sport in which they were maybe 2-3 decent other teams. It's pretty easy to win the WC when you have no one to play. This brings me to this ridiculous argument about equal pay that Rachel repeated again. It's not a gender issue. It has to do with women's and men's soccer being essentially two different sports with extremely different levels of competition, popularity, and how much revenue they generate. The men's WC generates infinitely more revenue than the women's so it makes sense for men to get paid more. The media types like Rachel know this as it's a very simple concept to understand, yet they keep pushing this trope about equal pay. Lastly, this ridiculous comparison between women's and men's soccer drives me insane. The USWNT was never better than the USMNT. They just played in tournaments with next to zero competition while the USMNT plays in the most competitive team sport on planet Earth! It was infinitely more difficult to win the men's WC than the women's one. Now that women's soccer around the world is being taken more seriously and the level of competition has increased (still very far from men's soccer even by relative standards) the USWNT isn't having such an easy time and suddenly not looking like this incredible, unbeatable team the media made them out to be. Get used to it. The time when the US was one of only 2-3 nations where there was some investment in women's soccer is over. It's going to be much harder to win the women's WC or the Olympic soccer tournament from now on.
@@svalerie98 No, it isn't. Soccer or rather original football is competitive and beautiful, and exciting because everything can change in a second by one goal, goals scored are often stunning, players are not covered from head to toe in protective gear like in American football, like some snowflakes, and to put a ball in the net by your feet is much more difficult and skillful for a human than by hands, which is the way in American football. Not to mention, in American football, you often have breaks for 100 commercials, which wastes around 1 hour in the middle of the game, which is pathetic and boring. Soccer, is also the most emotional and popular sport around the globe, for a reason, so the majority of humanity disagrees with you. The final of the WC in 'soccer' is watched by 1.2 billion people around the world on average, many times even more. Of course, we are talking about men's soccer here, not women's. In comparison, the last Super Bowl was watched by 150 million viewers around the world in total, so there is the US viewership+ global one in that number. So basically, there is no comparison. Almost nobody outside the US cares about American football because it's American football that is boring, not exciting at all, and not the most difficult sport at all.
