Being heavily tattooed in 2020 is a much different experience than being heavily tattooed in 1960, but that doesn’t mean strangers have stopped judging people and saying ignorant nonsense. We spoke to our panel about the rudest thing people have ever said or done to them because of their tattoos. People really need to listen to their mothers and keep their mouths shut when they don’t have anything nice to say.
Hopefully #13 is lucky for us here at Inked. We’ve rounded up all of your favorite tattooers for our 13th season of Tattoo Artists React. This season we’ll be discussing all of the most important tattoo-related topics-rude things people have said about their tattoos, some advice for people getting their first tattoo, tattoos they regret and more. Plus, our panel judges the tattoos you sent in and they share all of their crazy client stories. It’s going to be a season filled with excitement, hilarity and even the occasional tear. New episodes will be posted every Friday.

The best I’ve got is being tattooed with my mom (we have the same tattoo on our backs and have gotten different tattoos at the same time as well). Props to him. Shut that jack@$$ down!

As far as the artist chick with no tattoos, one of the best artists that ever did work on me was named Mama-San. She was a 60 year old Japanese lady, without a single tattoo on her body, who ran a shop out of a small hole in the wall on Venice Beach. She said she learned to tattoo on Yakuzas as a young girl in Japan. She did the best fine line work! And great prices. She did a giant L A Dodgers logo on my chest for 40$! This was 11 years ago, I was 22 and it still looks great! She was such a friendly, bubbly little old lady and you would NEVER expect she was a tattoo artist! Do any other LA natives remember her? So yeah you definitely do not need to have tattoos to be a GREAT tattoo artist!

I've seen a great many shitty tattoos on artists who produce stellar tattoos on clients. None of my hairdressers have had great hair themselves, most of my friends who work with me in Makeup & SPFX don't wear makeup on the daily or on the job, my friends who are cooks and chefs order takeout when they're off the clock. None of those things have bearing on how they produce their professional work. I don't know what the big deal is that she doesn't have tats! Doesn't mean shit truly

I got a tattoo recently, and my mother was mortified. So, naturally, I was scared to tell my retired pastor and pastor’s wife grandparents. To my surprise, they were relatively ok. My granddaddy even included the saying from my tattoo, Always Keep Fighting, in his prayer of safe travels over us.

I have both sleeves hands, and some chest. I’ve gotten the “what does your mother think?!” I always say “my mothers dead…” (she’s not she loves my tattoos) but that shuts them up pretty well 😂

I remember I used to be a cashier and one day a dude (without asking) grabbed my shirt sleeve and started lifting it to see my tattoos. When I pulled away he then grabbed me by my arm and yanked me over the counter sternly saying “I just wanna look”. Luckily one of my co-workers was a retired marine and grabbed the customer by his shirt and dragged him out the front door and told him to look at the parking lot.

Even people who like tattoos can be rude, coming up and grabbing an arm and loudly going "omg i love your tatts can i seeeeee". Although the upside is they're not condemning you, but there's such a thing as personal space.

I had just walked out of building after getting new tattoo and some women walked passed me telling her kids to never end up like me as she pulled them closer to her as if I was going to hurt them. Then 2 elderly ladies walked passed and one of them pointed at me and I heard her say"But he is so young", that one kinda made me laugh because I look a lot younger than I am

After I graduated, my favorite high school teacher showed up to my sister's class with full sleeves. Didn't affect his work, and he now teaches university level. So I have no qualms in getting work done before I start teaching!

I was at work at a supermarket i work at and some customer (oldish woman about mid 50's/early 60's) asked me where somet was so I was helping her find it. She must've looked down and noticed my sleeve tattoo on my right arm (its the only tattoos I have right now as well I'm not heavily covered or anything.) Her mood entirely changed. She said "oh look at all those tattoos on your arm, what does your mother think." Bit rude but I just said back "oh yeah she doesn't like them that much but she's my mum its expected" then this Karen straight up called me the most posh/rude thing I've ever been called. She goes "im not surprised its working class commoner scum." I told my tattoo artist its the funniest shit someone's told me how they don't like my tattoos

Whoever the editor is freaking ROCKS!!! I also had a friend be told by a complete stranger he was the "r" word and would never make anything of himself because, and ONLY because of, his tattoos (this is when he was bagging groceries at 18 right out of HS). He now makes a HEALTHY 6-figures in IT in his early 40s (and has for years) and is *legitimately* one of the most intelligent people I've had the pleasure to dive into awesome conversations with. Oh, and he served our country in the Army, too, which I'm sure she didn't have the guts to do since she took the opportunity back then to ridicule him in front of her young son for no reason other than his ink. Screw her judgmental ass, and all those like her, to the moon and back.

My husband has one tattoo so far its on his arm. So far when ever someone sees it they get so excited because its jack and sally from nightmare before Christmas but we havent left our city since he had it done over 3 years ago so probably why we havent gotten any negative comments yet. Also part of the tattoo is 5 pumpkins under jack and sally with the first letter of each of our kids names. He still has to get one more for our 2 year old. My kids love their dad's tattoo they all want one when they grow up

I'm feeling this. I used to be a snowboarding instructor and charged less due to the fact I worked for a hostel. Gotta be nice to backpacking guests/ students/ people on a budget. We had amazing ratings and a small amount twats expected hotel service in a hostel due to the ratings. I was complained at for having a beard and having tattoos and that staff should not have facial hair or tattoos (fine by me and the owner). I was a manager lol. Looked intimidating according to a group of Japanese guests, which is strange as all the other Japanese were cool, maybe rich kids on vacation? Same with cheapskates who try to haggle you down even though you are running 30% cheaper and still try to have a go at you. I never caved in and had a good giggle at seeing them come in with broken limbs etc as they had to be the "big man" and not need teaching and hurt themselves. Sorry about the rant :)

I have a lot of black and gray tattoos. Full sleeve, half sleeve, chest and stomach and a face tattoo. People would see me and automatically think I was some “cholla” that went to prison. Lol I got stopped at the airport of all places because I was traveling from Washington To Arizona and they wanted to check me for “gang affiliation “ 😂 I only have a ticket on my record for speeding when I was like 18. My full sleeve is literally cartoon/animation characters but they saw all the black and gray and that I am Latina and it was enough.

I'm not the most covered by far, only have 4 now. but the whole "what does your mum think!?" thing is so ridiculous. I've been asked it a few times, once really rudely. I'm not a tattoo artist so I can't flex as hard as "I did a sleeve on my mum" but I can tell them both my parents have a bunch and bought my my first tattoo as a birthday present. and they're a pre school teacher and a manager! coz "but blah blah, good jobs" like a suit wouldn't cover my arms anyway?

I’d say I’m a pretty good person but I’ve always loved tattoos, I’m a part of the community of people who love old school music and fashion from the 1950s and It’s crazy how much (some) men in the community talk about women like if they are made for them, they talk about how women today shouldn’t have tattoos and that women shouldn’t dress like they do today (I’m 17 and I love dressing 1950s inspired) I won’t even say the other things they say because there is too many examples. one time I saw a guy comment under a video “back when women didn’t pierce their private parts” what a fucking gross weirdo. I’ve always loved expressing my taste in clothing and music, and fashion and with tattoos you’re able to express your taste that’s why I love them

My grandma once thought my finger tattoos were dirt. Does that count? lmao. She tried to wipe them off across the table at a sandwich deli place. So embarrassing lol. I was 23. im a chinese guy heavily tattooed, like double sleeve, neck, chest, back and left leg sleeve. the rudest ive ever had was in japan where the front desk told me i cannot stay there because of my visible tattoos. i know they have a thing against tattoos, especially in saunas and pools, but the entire hotel it self? and it wasnt a local hotel, it was an international one, like full of travellers from other countries.

It's always fun being a hardcore Christian with tattoos. I get to change a lot of people's minds and perspectives on them. Something similar to what bloodofwolves said, I like to ask people "Do you really think Jesus is so petty that he won't like me for having some ink under my skin?"

Doesn’t it also say we can’t eat foods that haven’t been cultivated for 3years? No meats as well? Bc parasite/health risks The Bible is a guide. Tattoos back then only came from druids that worshipped the dead. Pretty sure that’s why it’s advised against it bc back then you’d be persecuted for it

Austhentics don't determine how holy you are if your a good person and your only flaw is self expression than there's no way your a sinner maybe if you have satanic tats that might say you think so but it takes alot for anyone to be cast from God's presence, most of the time it's not even "him" but ourselves that say we're not worth it and turn away but still you kinda got to be true evil to be cast off as the scriptures do say judge not least ye be judged as in those who say these things often have worse lives then those they harass. I just hope everyone gets good tats and stop the rep of it being for the dark side only.

I know I’m late, but now I feel bad for that kid if something his mom said to him and probably repeats dissuades him from expressing himself. I grew up in a religious house hold (don’t have tattoos yet) and my mom was mad at me for over a month for getting my nose and ears pierced and is actively against me and my brother getting tattoos.

@@HallucinatingHedgehogs im from a lutheran household and everybody here but me has a tattoo My great grandpa has a naked woman on his arm from ww2 he got in the navy. I think it started with him, because his twin boys were truck drivers and both got matching sleeves and my mom has tatts on the back of her neck hidden by her grown out hair but when she was 23 she had pig tails so you could see it. Dad has a tribal on his thigh i think. Oh both my mom and dad have had piercings. Then like my orthodox russian neighbors, some branches of the christian faith especially the eastern churches encourage religious tattoos culturally from that part of the world. Same with devout mexican catholics

Last year I had a woman come up to me in the grocery store while I was getting bananas and she just said to me, "You've ruined your legs, why would you do that I'm horrified" to my fox and otter tattoos on my calves. I was so dumbfounded because most people compliment them that I walked away and had to go back to get my bananas.

My Priest told me it is okay to have tattoos as long as they are "not evil representations". For example, no upside-down crosses.

@@faysmith1724 I’m sure it depends on your location but my mom has been a nurse for about 15 years and at her jobs she’s said that people with visible tattoos have to wear long sleeves or cover their tattoos in some way. As far as employers looking down on tattoos I think it depends on your location and the field of work you’re getting into. I live in a pretty conservative area so I imagine things are different here compared to more liberal places

Generally a tattoo artist doesn't do all their own tattoos. So whether they have good tattoos on them or bad ones does reflect their own work and art at all.

I have noticed over time the rude comments have mostly been replaced by intrigue and curiosity. I have had several older women ask about my sleeves and why I got them and what they mean, who I got them done by, and who is a good artist in the area that they or someone they know go get work from. Being 6'3", long bearded biker looking guy and fully tatted with some tee on that is probably offensive to the people who would be judgmental about tattoos keeps most of the Karens away from me I think. I can live with that.

Funny how people have such stigmas about ink but these are all some of the most beautiful people. Since I aquired my meager collection of ink, I've had people stop me at gas stations to ask where I got my work from, I've had a lovely woman in her 90s tell me how she got three tattoos in her 70s/80s and she loved my "artwork." I even had a rabbi ask me about my scripture tattoo and he repeated it for me in beautiful Hebrew. People need to stop being ugly and learn true beauty comes from kindness towwed each other. (Won't ever happen, but yknow) God cares more about you not being a douchebags than about beautiful ink in your skin.

I was working at a subway and I had an old man come up to me and tell me that I was never going to do anything with my life and that I looked "retarded" (his words not mine) with all my tattoos (I have a full sleeve and a couple of tattoos on my other arm). I didn't get the chance to tell him that I was actually just about to graduate from university with my degree in environmental science and was working as a teaching assistant at the university on top of caring for about 20 rescued animals and working a part time job so if that's his definition of doing nothing then I guess he was right. :) A very nice lady came up to me after and apologized on his behalf and said she liked my tattoos so creds to her!

My cousin is disowned from the family for getting tattoos during her teenage years, like her parents literally disowned and cut ties with her cos of her tattoos, she doesn't care though, for us cousins she is the coolest one in the family. She has her own place, is a proud lesbian, rides her Harley and has a cool doctor girlfriend who is also covered in tattoos. She was the one who inspired us to not follow our orthodox religion strictly which saw me adopt this cutie here even when my parents were pissed.

last weekend at disney world i had a family hardcore staring at me while i was waiting for food, and the dad came up to me and told me to cover my tattoos because i was scaring the children around us, and that people "like me" don't belong at a family theme park. my guy, it's 11am and i just want my pizza can you leave me alone

@@WickedPhase No they did not kick him off the show because he didn't have any tattoos. One of the judges gave his grief about it. When he retaliated they whined about him being disrespectful. Saying that him losing and leaving the show was fair.

Not tattoo related, but I really want to say it. I, as well as my wife and many of our friends, have been asked if we cut ourselves because we're goths. By random strangers in, like, grocery stores. Yikes.

I started getting tattooed as soon as I was 18: my first tattoo was on the hand and when I got like 5-6, people started looking at me like if I was a crackhead or a felon (I used to live in a very small town, full of posh and elderly people). Strangely, after a while, I moved to a bigger city and started getting a lot more tattoos but never had anyone say something offensive to me, more like the opposite as even older people started to compliment me about them or just asking the regular questions "does it hurt?" etc..
