Atlantic City is a coastal resort city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States, known for its casinos, boardwalk, and beaches. Beginning as a popular “health resort” in the 1870’s, railroad companies and land speculators constructed grand hotels along a seven mile long boardwalk that drew thousands of visitors each year. The region’s golden era arrived in the 1920’s, with tourism at its peak, and as Prohibition went largely unenforced city-wide. Like many older east coast cities after World War II, Atlantic City became plagued with poverty, crime, corruption, and general economic decline in the mid-to-late 20th century. In 1976, New Jersey voters legalized casino gambling in Atlantic City. Since 1921, Atlantic City has been the home of the Miss America pageant. Atlantic City also inspired the U.S. version of the board game Monopoly, especially the street names.

A few years later, the Interstate highways and jet airliners would appear and take Atlantic City's clientele to destinations more distant and more exciting. The symbolic end of old Atlantic City would come in 1972, with the demolition of the Traymore Hotel (seen briefly at 0:33).
