The “Anniversary Waltz” is often considered a Yiddish song. Indeed, one of most famous Yiddish songs. It is often placed among the best-known Yiddish music and Jewish music. The new Yiddish and English lyrics to this anniversary song featured in the present recording were written by Marc Berman, who also sings.
In reality, the romantic music to this Yiddish classic was composed by by a Romanian composer of Serbian descent, Ion Ivanoci (1845-1902). The music became widely known when it appeared as the “Anniversary Song” in the 1946 movie biography “The Al Jolson Story.” Al Jolson himself, together with Saul Chaplin, wrote the lyrics. The following year, the Yiddish poet and singer Chaim Tauber wrote Yiddish lyrics, titled "Khaseneh Valse" (Wedding Waltz), in a musical arrangement by the noted composer of Yiddish songs, Henry Lefkowitch. It practically turned into a Yiddish folk song, due to its popularity.
This popular standard has been recorded by artists as diverse as Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore, Tom Jones, Andy Williams, Pat Boone and opera tenor Jan Peerce.
Many Russians know the song with Russian lyrics, under the title “Danube Waves.” There are multiple versions of the lyrics in Russian.
