On today's episode we are joined by a player who burst onto the scene for Arsenal as a teenager, showing a tenacity and technical ability that few English players have ever possessed. After a breakout performance against Messi and Guardiola’s Barcelona, the sky seemed to be the limit for Jack Wilshere but an ongoing ankle issue would lead to him retiring from the game at age 30 after spells at Bournemouth, West Ham and AGF in the Danish Superliga.
Now a coach in the Arsenal system under Mikel Arteta, Jack joins the show to discuss a career that excited and frustrated in equal measure whilst also giving the inside scoop on Arteta’s Arsenal revolution.

Simon tries to make it sound like the club willingly lowered its standards. Taking on the stadium debt and being unable to spend at the same moment that Abramovich and the Glazers and the Saudis made money more important than ever inflating the market was the biggest factor. But you can’t say the new stadium was a mistake. It was something that had to be done to secure the long term future of the club and make them able to compete in the new circumstances in the long run, which it did. And everyone underestimates what it took for Wenger to keep Arsenal in the CL for ten years after the stadium move. And people also forget that there were a number of title challenges in there even though they didn’t end up winning it, as well as 3 FA Cups in the club’s “darkest period.”

I feel like that "injuries" card gets played far too often as an excuse. No doubt, he didn't have the greatest injury record by any means, but I still feel like he lost that bit of magic once he started developing from his early twenties onwards. I personally felt that he filled out too much later in his career by putting on body mass which impeded the main attributes of his game of carrying the ball, commiting opposition players & being agile & mobile enough to swiftly turn away & wriggle past opponents with a quick change of direction. He was nowhere near as silky a player after that 2010/11 season. Of course, injuries didn't help, but I don't buy into the narrative that it was plainly a case of "injuries robbed him of going on to achieve greatness in the game." Even when he did go through spells of getting a consistent run of games in the side later on, as I said previously, he'd lost that bit of magic that he showed when he was first breaking through & failed to ever recapture it. I think too much emphasis is placed on the Barca game when he was 19 & his "injury record" as way of explaining as to why he never went on to become world class.

Arsenal went in severe decline when they signed Arteta, Mertesacker and Podolski. Wenger was at the beginning of the end at this time.

Did it? Or did it lay the foundation of where Arsenal are today? If those transfers never happend would we be in the position of trust, building relations and club unity.

What coz he came through the clubs Academy & won a few FA Cups 😂? If he goes on to progress to manage the first team & does a Bill Shankly or Alex Ferguson job for us by winning a few Prems & CL's, then I'll entertain that idea, but nowhere near legendary status as it stands.

@dizzlekid That's the entire point of an online public forum, such as a RU-vid comments section you melt, to express an opinion 😂. Are you a relation of his or something 😅? Don't get upset & take it so personally pal. As you said, that's all it is, an opinion 😆.
@oisin5684
@oisin5684 2 месяца назад
@@dizzlekidI feel like the "injuries" card gets played far too often as an excuse.

We definitely did show some immaturity in the title race last season, especially in the Southampton, Brighton and Forest matches in the run-in(West Ham as well, but at the time it felt like nothing more than an anomalous result).
