They should’ve listened to Bauer years ago. This is the 3rd time MLB has been aware of cheating but did nothing about it because they were benefiting from it or would have been harmed by doing something about it.
People have been saying baseball is "dying" for decades. Hell, I remember as a kid people saying the sport was dead after the 1994 lockout. I'm not saying the sport is in a good place (Manfred is quite possibly the worst commissioner in American sports), but I doubt baseball is going away. It's just not the American Pastime anymore, it's just a tertiary sport now.
@@jorban11 I have never watched a baseball game in my life. Neither has anyone from my entire state. Lmmfao. Baseball is the most useless and boring sport in life. Get rid of it
How is he ruining baseball? How is this new change ruining baseball? 2 weeks ago everyone was calling for a stop to the cheating and now everyone is d riding these players lol. These pitchers are cheating and now they can’t cheat and they get hurt... cuz they been cheating their whole life. I don’t feel bad for glassnow or any pitcher. Y’all were cheating and they also KNEW this was gonna happen. What they want to get 1 more season of cheating in to beef up their contracts before it’s stopped? No. Cheating is cheating. Baseball is putting an end to it and a lot of pitchers are mad they are about to be exposed lol.
If there are two entities that seem to want to not grow, not evolve, not be more popular, not do better business...I can't even fathom them, much less find any.
Amazing that MLB has the strongest union in sports despite the fact that it's far less popular than the NFL. A backup shortstop who bats .180 earns more than many starting players in the NFL.
While there is definitely a good chance of a lockout. These actions by MLB are great at damaging the union which would lessen any kind of labor dispute being viable. Don't get it twisted every action by MLB from the past few years from the Astros, to 2020, to sticky stuff can all be targeted toward the CBA and damaging the players for billionaires profits nothing is about the health or well being of players and the game its all about money.
There’s actually a lot of exciting players right now. I started watching this year after not watching baseball since I was a kid. Your moment is pretty stupid tho haha... MLB viewership has always been based off the players??
@@theJohnGaltLine okay and now they are doing something? What’s your point? You would rather them let the cheating go? I mean players are literally crying because they are being told they can’t cheat anymore. Especially with the CBA coming up i applaude MLB for doing this. It’s not popular but it’s the right choice. Pitchers wanted 1 more year to pad their stats and they said no, enough is enough.
@@markgriffin2087 Unfortunately incompetence doesn't get you fired in this business. As much as he's hurt the game and put baseball in the bad position it's in, the owners are still making money. That's ultimately Manfred's job: make sure the cash flow is still going and that profits are being maximized. As long as that is happening, he'll keep his job.
It makes the MLB look like a joke though, similar to the steroid scandal they knew for years guys were doing this and only stepped in when things got out of control. If the congressional hearings didn't happen the entire league would still be roiding. So that sends the message that they don't care if you cheat as long as things don't look bad for their bottom line.
Because the players union wouldn’t allow for any of the Astros players to be punished, not even for a game, in exchange for details about what they were doing. They were never going to be punished.
@@hotepkiller1180 the thing is with Manfred there's no way the changes & adaptations needed are going to happen, he's too worried about money and personal profit to even realize that need. He has sent only the wrong messages & seems to be the kind of person that want´s nothing to do with desition making, hence MLBs decision making is always inopportunely and late. Without him around at least there's the possibility that the new management has a better (and real) understanding of the sport with which that "boreball" as u describe it and many sees will become again the interesting & fun that baseball has been.
Too me, It’s a bad excuse. It would be the same as if a player says he’s been taking steroids his entire career and when he’s told to stop doping, his muscles get weak and he can’t hit the ball as far. It’s not Major League Baseball’s fault that Tyler hasn’t developed the muscles to throw the ball properly without tearing something. Also don’t believe for a second that rosin and sunscreen is the only concoction that he was using. Zero pity for cheaters.
What was the penalty to the cheaters in Houston. Exactly. My favorite sport to play while growing up is a complete joke. Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame. 🧐
I'm with you. I know rosin. Drying agent, but makes your fingers hard. If not naturally sticky. That's it! What else do pitchers want? Except foreign substance to give them an advantage?
His claim is by not using Spider Tack he was forced to grip the ball harder while throwing, and that caused his arm injury. What he’s really saying is he’s a pathological cheater, who can’t maintain his job and his arm health unless he is permitted to cheat with Spider Tack. 😆
They do have a universal substance that pitchers are allowed to use. Rosin bags. I mean the argument that "I've been cheating so long that if I can't cheat anymore it's going to hurt me" is absurdly stupid.
1 ratings are up not down as others have noted. 2. The TV networks are in desperate need of programing to compete in the modern streaming entertainment market and the best programming they can have to compete is in live sports. Networks will continue to pay a massive premium for live sports (or even just live programming at all look at something like WWE which has less viewers than any pro sports league and still gets billion dollar TV deals)
How can you complain openly about suddenly not being able to cheat?? When you were fully aware you were blatantly cheating??? And then blame the league for enforcing the rule that you were aware of all along, that you had to be fully aware could be enforced at any time? The picthers simply have no valid argument or grievance here
@@justinwieduwilt5420 it’s the same issue with steroids, the mlb turns a blind eye to it, then suddenly decided to enforce it, they coulda dealt with this when Bauer bought it up 4 years ago, but making the pitchers change after years of getting away with it does seem reckless.
I've been a huge Sox fan since the mid 80's.... And can honestly say that I haven't watched a game in a couple of seasons. I still follow my Sox, but I'm at the point that I'd rather watch a romcom with my wife than watch more than a couple of innings of MLB. I don't care what they do at this point. The excitement is gone for me. I'd rather watch football, basketball and hockey at this point. It's a shame really. ***I think that I should've been clear here...I HAVE tried to watch a couple of games in the past couple of years, and I couldn't get past the first couple of innings...I still look at the box scores, read the recaps and watch the highlights (sometimes), but I just can't watch the games. It's become a snoozefest for me. This is obviously a subjective thing though. But for me, it just seems like the game consists mostly of strikeouts, home runs and what feels like an eternity between pitches. That's just not entertaining TO ME. But I do say to each their own. 🙂
Basketball is getting trash too. It’s all the analytics, numbers, slight advantages people have abused to win more games at any cost to profit. More 3’s and all those analytics combined w the more fouls for free throws cuz “hiGhEr sCoREs mOre eYEs” and then baseball with the home runs and pitching advantages because more wins (pitching) or more BOOMS that they think will translate to higher ratings in both sports, and then it completely backfires
@@ryangregohara I see his YT clips here and there... definitely can be entertaining... But I doubt thousands Started watching MLB again just by watching his clips... The game is still boring as hell to watch. I just watch highlights SOMETIMES and look at the box score.
If you had to adjust your grip so much you injured yourself from overexertion, maybe you were using it for more than just a better grip. 🤔 Just sayin' ...
@@GeraldM_inNC ummm you don’t know what your talking about if you say he was never a big prospect. He absolutely was, now degrom was never considered a good prospect. So he must be cheating by your logic. You are severely misinformed
@@rve420 Yeah I mean at what point are you not just a bad pitcher if you need a cheating aid so bad that you are literally worthless without it. He's not just using it for grip because he's admitted that he's completely changed the way he throws the ball in a way that's only possible because of what he's using and that it's performance enhancing. Real pitchers throw the same way regardless and rosin or whatever literally just give them more grip. Having to go cold turkey wouldn't destroy those pitchers especially when they still have access to rosin. Dudes a joke imo. You can find a recent video right now of Pedro Martinez saying he essentially throws the same way regardless.
MLB has been corrupt since inception, Manfred’s the new pimp and all us fans are his b*tch. The Astros were the Trevor Bauers of the MLB sign stealing era 2015-2020 (RIP)
This is the MLB already. It’s been an arms race for the last 20+ years. It creates a level playing field, which is the great irony of it. If everyone just didn’t do it, it would effectively be the same as the state we are currently in where practically everyone is cheating in some way or another.
I swear! I don’t watch baseball but I’m fascinated with this story and I’m trying to figure out “if it’s banned, why is everyone mad they’re enforcing the rule?”
I remember many players who played in npb and mlb saying the mlb ball is harder the grip But yes, i follow npb more than mlb, its a better overall product, fans are better, players will stay at a team so fans can relate, farm league players are not exploited like in usa Oh and high school baseball in japan is awesome
Lol no. Rosin is legal for one. Two: MLB said BEFORE THE SEASON STARTED that no action will be taken until after the season. This has also been an issue that has existed for years but MLB said and did nothing.
Agreed. They also already have it. It's called rosin. Pedro Martinez was talking about how effective rosin is for grip when warmed up by moving his fingers back and forth or rubbing against clothing. He said it's also effective when mixed with sweat. How many years did pitchers go with just using rosin after all? The vast majority of the league's existence. Even guys that threw major heat like Nolan Ryan ( arguably the fastest pitcher ever as documented in Fastball) retained grip and control. Rosin works. The stuff they're using now isn't for grip, it's for enhanced spin rate because it is far more adhesive than rosin.
It is telling that everyone's first reaction is "MLB will screw it up." The leagues always over think the financial aspects, yes you may lose a few million in 21-22, but the money will still be there. They are so afraid of losing 1-2 million that they end up in this huge predicament that they end up losing millions anyway.
@@mosntersmcoc6564 I saw that video. It is legal technically. His concern was whether or not it would be considered illegal due to the vague discretion umpires have. He demonstrated it was legal, but the ball would still temporarily stick to his hand with outstretched fingers. Therefore umpires might feel inclined to eject despite the very fact it is legal. It's a valid concern.
I've been cheating all year and now you're telling me I can't cheat anymore and I used to never use grip stuff my whole career but now I have to because it's making it so I don't need to use any muscles, I don't even need to go to the gym and lift weights . I pitched really good did not hit anyone But my muscles are so sore, I felt like I pitched a baseball game.
I haven’t watched a solid baseball season for about 5 years and honestly, the magic that the sport had is gone. Football has left it in the dust and basketball might pass it soon. I love hockey, but I doubt it will ever surpass baseball, but my god has it fallen off.
Basketball is a shell of what it used to be also. Too much soccer style flopping. Players can't drive into the paint any longer. It's all about the 3 point game, and no more big guys in center. Stick to hockey, like your thumbnail shows...it's definitely the best.
I don't follow baseball, haven't even watched it in years. But your suppose to grip the ball with your hand and nothing else right? So if your using anything else that would be cheating. If you got used to cheating and now you can't anymore, tough luck buddy. Maybe you shouldn't have cheated in the first place.
Players and fans alike ALREADY had zero reason to trust Manfred after the handling of the Astros scandal. Then the Covid handling mess and now this?MLB is about to die because the hand picked successor Commissioner is gonna blow the whole thing up with incompetence.
Pitcher's arms break weekly. The human arm isn't mean to throw balls 100mph thousands of times. Glasnow just had a convenient way to rationalize it to himself, but unless the injury rate goes up, this is just convenient timing.
I hear all of this stuff about granting players a grace period. How about the players don’t cheat in the first place then they won’t need a grace period
Has anyone seen the tutorial Pedro Martinez did where he mixed sweat and rosin (both currently legal) and showed how tacky his fingers became? Not seeing the problem other than pitchers wanting to maintain the advantage.
@@Ken_Scaletta batters are better than ever though, if you grip it less hard, then ur not gonna be in the majors for very long. It’s the same issue with steroids, if the league turns a blind eye to it, players that choose not to cheat will be at risk of being replaced by guys who do.
If Glasnow (and other pitchers) knew how to pitch, then perhaps he wouldn't feel like he has to throw a 100 mph. ("Me throwing a hundred and being 6-7, is why I got hurt."). I don't buy it.
Just so we’re clear, the cheater is upset that when he stopped cheating, he got hurt worse, but only because he was cheating in the first place? Yeah, that makes sense.
I don’t get it. Kids from 8 years old to 18 have no problems with grip or baseballs. Once you get to the pros you need new baseballs and foreign substances in order to pitch
The over the past 3 years, hit by pitches are at the highest rate they've been at since...1900. So no, this has nothing to do with control. Such a dumb myth.
My biggest takeaway is that things seemingly innocuous like sunscreen can be that helpful to pitchers, but I guess any incremental benefit would be exponentially greater when talking about balls being thrown 90+ mph.
The argument is really about what's the most important position in baseball...pitching or hitting. I say it's both but if you can't grip the ball then find a way that doesn't necessarily require a substance
MLB needs to go. Too many egos, cheaters and lazy rich owners. Minor leagues are fun and entertaining to watch. And much more affordable family entertainment.
"Headed for a nuclear winter" again? I know i was too young to understand paychecks when the strike happened, but i lost interest in the sport none the less. Sports need good sports to compete with, and baseball is that person who gets advice from the other more successful people and ignores the advice because, "i'm older i know more."
NO HITTERS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SUNSCREEN AND ROSIN. For all the MLB talked about "collecting data," TALK TO THE PLAYERS. AND SHARE THE DATA. Did you find that sunscreen and rosin causes an unfair advantage? I'd be shocked. I'm disgusted, once again, with MLB and Manfred.
Baseball should see the NFL's parity and popularity and follow suit. If you have to have a lockout for a season , so be it. Give those guys in the minors a chance to play in a big league stadium . But if you compare the Dodgers payroll to smaller market teams , it just isnt right. Has to be a "hard" salary cap that everyone has to be under. I can remember the Bleacher seats at Wrigley. I could afford to go in high school when I hardly had any money. Baseball has priced working class families out of that stadium experience and TV doesnt do it justice.
This is totally surreal to me. Played some little league and a tiny bit of high school ball with and against Glasnow. Bauer also went to the same high school but didnt really get to meet the guy while at hart high. hope Glasnow recovers quickly!
@@LambeauLeeeper then what is "Rule 3.01: "no player shall intentionally discolor or damage the ball by rubbing it with soil, rosin, paraffin, licorice, sand-paper, emery-paper or other foreign substance." Violators face ejections and/or suspensions."
Just curious. Was what they're using against the rules, or did they decide after the fact they don't like what they're using? Basically, did the rules say you can ONLY use X, Y, or Z? Or did they outlaw a handful of things and these new substances are not those, so they're adding them to the banned list?
The overwhelming majority of MLB "hitters" have one swing. No matter the count, outs, inning or score, they are going for the bomb. It is sickening to see the great game of baseball reduced to whack a mole....and blaming pitchers for this foolishness is not going to fix the problem.
Let pitchers use whatever they want, it's going to be impossible to police and there's a limit to what these sticky substances can do anyways. Make other changes to compensate and increase number of balls in play (?move the mound back a few feet, make changes to the ball, etc)
I don’t get the “pitchers don’t want to hit the batters” argument, the rate of hit by pitch over the last few seasons is the highest it’s been in 100 years. And that’s with the whole “unwritten rules” thing and guys not intentionally drilling each other.
Pitchers should start hitting a ton of batters and say its because they can't use sticky substances. Then what do you do? Allow pitchers to use it again so they won't kill a batter?
Their is no acceptable substance except talent, the threads of the ball, sweat, rosin. The Astros were the Trevor Bauers of the MLB sign stealing era 2015-2020 (RIP)
Glasgow, they didn't tell you to use nothing. Last time I checked, rosin is still legal. You just want to cheat to up your spin rates. Spare us the self pity. You can still use rosin to get grip, but you don't care about grip, you care about your spin rates
A strike or lockout will be the end of baseball. How soon we forget. The last strike almost ended baseball. And the fact is, performance enhancing drugs and the The Bond, Mcquire, Sosa’s of the game saved baseball. MLB is already getting the “eye” for getting into politics.
The only thing the MLB did wrong with the sticky situation is not crack down sooner. Ever league has an analytics problem, all it does is create partisan fans who stop watching when their team is out. No one wants to watch a boring product if their team isn't in it, the media just doesn't get it.
Needed to be done. This injury is indeed unfortunate, but the entire season could have been a farce if the pitchers were left to their own devices. Oh, by the way, there has been a "universal substance" for 100 years. It is the rosin bag.
