I watched that KC vs Seattle game that was played in the Kingdome on tv from Kansas City. (the next to last clip). 3 hours I watched that game, and thought "damn! KC lost". Harold Reynolds was the winning run in extra innings. Then I saw something that made my jaw drop. Bo was on the frickin warning track when he launched that throw to home to nail Reynolds on the fly. I could not believe it. Royals won in extra innings. Everyone was talking about 1 thing the next day. Late West Coast extra-inning game it was after midnight in KC before it ended. @kiltedwolf2
@kiltedwolf2 2 года назад
Those in the game knew his arm wasn't under rated. The sad part of Rick Ankiel's career is that he couldn't stay in the game long enough to show it off more. Had he been able to hit .225, he would have stayed in the game longer.
@rustyshackleford6637
@rustyshackleford6637 Год назад
Let's examine the highpoints of Rick Ankiel's career. Yeah, he struck out 194 batters as a 20/21 year old in 2000. He struck out Barry Bonds 3 times in a game that year. And then, he later returned as a power-hitting outfielder. He hit 33 home runs in the calendar year following his callup as an outfielder in August '07. But he fell off pretty quickly as a hitter, with an OPS in 2009 that was lower than his OPS as a pitcher in 2000. Out of all that, I think people remember he was a pitcher, but I don't think everybody quite realizes how dominant he was for a brief time with hall of fame level stuff. And, I don't think people typically remember his all-around great 2008 season (hitting 25 homers as a full-time CF). But I would say that by the end of his career he made it onto the shortlist of the 4 or 5 best outfield arms in the eyes of most baseball fans. Rick Ankiel was the quintessential "highlight reel player." And he had to be a pretty damn good athlete to do it. I mean, Ohtani can pitch and hit. But he doesn't play a plus-plus centerfield defense. Ankiel pretty much did a little of everything in his career.

Down by 3 runs leading off the 8th inning, and you get thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double? Yeah, that's a mistake. Your team needs baserunners at that point, and you can't risk making an out on the basepaths when you've only got six outs to work with.

As a young boy, I was fortunate to see Roberto Clemente play before his unfortunate demise at sea. He was truly special. In addition to that missile he had for an arm, he was smart. He'd make plays on a runner on first going to third on a base hit to right by "deaking" the batter into thinking he'd make the obvious throw. But he would throw BEHIND the batter as he foolishly rounded first thinking he had second base made. It was play I've seldom seen since. His arm was so good that runners simply stopped taking chances. The great throws from the outfield are my favs in the game. Truly gems.

When I was a kid, I saw Roberto Clemente throw out a runner going first to third, on the fly, from the deepest corner of right in old Crosley Field in Cinncinati. The man's right arm was a howitzer.

MLB should make this one of the events of the All Star game. I used to argue back in the day that Vladimir had the best arm. They should have a Right field to second, right to third, and right to home contest.
