In the thrilling western HOSTILES, actress Q'orianka Kilcher was reunited with Christian Bale and Wes Studi for the acclaimed film which was shot in remote New Mexico locations. Born to a Peruvian indigenous father and Alaskan born mother in Germany, Q’orianka was raised in Hawaii and, at the age of 14, was cast as Pocahontas in THE NEW WORLD. Her co-stars were Colin Farrell as Captain Smith, Christian Bale, Christopher Plummer, and Wes Studi. For her portrayal, Q’orianka was awarded the Best Breakthrough Performance of 2006 by the National Board of Review.
Q’orianka says that she always wanted to make a western and lobbied for the part, only to discover that director Scott Cooper had her in mind for the role of Elk Woman. How did she fare in the faraway locations, riding horses in ever changing weather and becoming ill miles from civilization? Find out in this conversation with producer/host Rob Word in this newly edited interview from January 16, 2018.
HOSTILES has been called “the best western since UNFORGIVEN.” It’s easy to see why as the film, written and directed by Cooper (CRAZY HEART), delivers in every area. Besides the exceptional cast, which also includes Rosamund Pike, Adam Beach, Jesse Plemons, Timothee Chalamet, Ben Foster and Stephen Lang, the locations are breathtaking and the situations ring with fierce gut-wrenching authenticity. It’s an unsettling modern classic that stands alongside the great western films.
During the interview, Q’orianka compares working with two honored filmmakers, Terrence Malick and Scott Cooper. Both have the creative freedom to deliver beautiful works of art. She also discusses her philanthropic work.

Rob this was a great interview with an actress, who brought an exceptional energy, throughout the entire interview. Hostiles is a great film, which truly subverts the preconceived ideas of what a western will be. Q'orianko and the rest of the stellar cast of this film made it feel real. The fact that it was a film shot on location made those locations and the elements characters in this unique film. I like you have seen it multiple times, and there are so many elements that can explored in each viewing, that multiple viewings are never stale. I as always enjoyed this episode very much. I can only hope that someone will make a western of similar quality sooner than later.

A truly wonderful interview with Q’orianka and what a great review on "Hostiles" here, Rob. All the co-stars in "Hostiles" were top of the stellar performance list. Adam Beach and Wes Studi in "Skinwalkers" excellent performances years ago now. Q’orianka : "one small action a day, multiplied by millions, is what changes the world."......a truly profound statement and point of view.

Nice interview, Rob, except for the slip about the ending of the movie "Hostiles." I have not seen it yet. I did enjoy Q'orianka in "The New World" which I thought was one of the best portrayals of Pocahontas. I also do consider it a western too, because from the beginning of European settlements is really the introduction of westerns. Q'orianka was closer to the real age of Pocahontas who aided the English settlers from the age of about ten or twelve until her death at too young an age. Much of the interview reminded me of a story from William Bartram for some reason. Bartram in his travels was warned of an extremely hostile Indian. When Bartram encountered the hostile, he greeted him like an old friend which caused the Indian to return the friendly attitude. It is an interesting story from an early American botanist.

In my opinion, "Unforgiven" was the most overhyped motion picture in the long history of Westerns. Compared to Eastwood's "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly," it read more like a TV movie. Films like "Shane," "The Searchers," and "High Noon" were true masterpieces, but this movie didn't even qualify. Morgan Freeman's turn in Shawshank Redemption puts this colossal bore to shame. Even the great Gene Hackman was simply reprising his role in "The Quick and the Dead," in all probability the worst single Western in Hollywood history. Even Hackman's whipping of Morgan was stolen directly from Karl Malden's truly evil character in Marlon Brando's fine "One-Eyed Jacks." Simply watch all of the films I just mentioned, and Unforgiven will shrink in comparison. It was just the Academy's way of finally giving Eastwood the Oscar he deserved for his earlier work, an all too common trait in Hollywood.
@hiramnoone
@hiramnoone Год назад
There were a couple of pretty good individual scenes in Unforgiven (Richard Harris and Hackman, "The Duck of Death" is one). But otherwise I mostly agree with you. Fact I'd rank Eastwood's entire pasta trilogy as being much better. Then there's Hang em High and The Outlaw Josey Wales. Way better films as well. Malden, a wonderful actor not normally seen as a bad guy, played a pretty good villain in Nevada Smith too.
@mlb5525
@mlb5525 Год назад
Couldn’t agree with you more. I never understood the hype either. To me it seemed like a mishmash of previous westerns which were all much better movies.
@tiffsaver
@tiffsaver Год назад
@@mlb5525 OMG!!! I thought that my comments would get me banned, or worse. Although I watched this film many times, I kept asking myself, "What am I missing? Why is this film getting so much attention??" There was absolutely NOTHING fresh or different about it. Then I forgot one of the most important things about filmmaking... good press. If you don't have the money to get your project seen, it could be the best movie in the world and you won't make a dime. But if you have limitless money AND publicity, you win the Academy Award. I've seen movies so bad that I thought they were a JOKE, films like "La-La Land," where typically good actors suddenly get out of their cars on the LA freeway and start dancing around. I thought it was some sort of joke, but they gave Emma Stone the Oscar for this piece of junk. Again, I love Clint Eastwood. In fact, the day after he won the award I saw him on the Columbia lot and actually congratulated him. But everyone knew that this wasn't his greatest film. Most of the time, the Academy Awards show is just that... a show.
@tiffsaver
@tiffsaver Год назад
@@hiramnoone One great scene does not a great movie make. Totally agree on your choice of Malden in "Nevada Smith," sadly another fantastic Western that no one ever seems to talk about!! That's why I call him one of the greatest actors of all time, able to play the nice guy and the evil guy with equal ability. Anyone reading this, PLEASE watch Steve McQueen in 'Nevada Smith,' and I promise you, you will thank me.
@hiramnoone
@hiramnoone Год назад
@@tiffsaver Then again, no great scenes is no help either. Yeah, Nevada Smith seems to be one that's pretty much overlooked. The best part of a trashy novel turned into Cinema gold. Arthur Kennedy, Brian Kieth, Martin Landau, Pat Hingle, Paul Fix, Howard Da Silva, Gene Evans, John Doucette, Suzanne Pleshette, Bert Freed, Lyle Bettger, Val Avery together with Malden rounding out a cast of some of the best character actors of the day.
